To be honest, I was a bit disappointed that I still have to plug in my iPad to my laptop (will it drain my laptop battery more quickly because it's treated as charging my iPad?). When I first head the news, I thought that maybe someone had found a way to establish a connection directly via bluetooth and wifi (sorta like how the Apple TV3 does airplay mirroring). :(

Didn't you read that there are other solutions that use WiFi, and that they don't work very well because they are very laggy and/or unreliable?

I instantly purchase Duet after it release. I was so excited when I heard about this app. but after one day use I'm so disappoint of it and request refund because two problem.

1. Touchscreen no function for me. I touch iPad's screen try to control my running program, But cursor just snap to top left corner every time. I can't do anything on touchscreen.

2. I guess the graphic driver that Duet installed is conflict with parallels desktop. My Mac crash after I exit PD and it never happened before.

High CPU usage is acceptable to me, I use iMac so here is no battery life problem.Frame rate and latency performance is better than any apps I tried before.

But I think Duet is still a unstable beta software. They shouldn't sell this app, Because the function they declare is incomplete (touchscreen don't work)

FINALLY
An exernal solution that doesn't 1, hijack and devour your wifi and 2, sputter and choke over it.
This is will be the most enormously useful thing on the ipad for anyone who works out in the field for months at a time as many our designers and engineers do. Thank you Dev.

I'm glad to be able to purchase this at the introductory price and look forward to continued updates.

Some of you people need to step back from your computers for a minute and gain some perspective.

Developers who try to be sysadmins make the lives of real sysadmins all that much harder!

The realities of working in a company with less than 15 people, with no "real sysadmins", means developers have to take on various roles including sysadmin duties. I'd be happy to let someone else do the work. It's a staffing failure of the company I work for not hiring full-time sysadmins, but that's not under my control. We do have one person who assumes the sysadmin role, but even he wears a programmer and DBA hat fairly often, among other things. That one person has enough on their plate that I have to assume responsibilities for things he can't handle or that I need done. In any case, I think a "real sysadmin" would be pleasantly surprised at how automated, robust, and well-documented some of our developer-managed systems are.

I have been using my iPad as a second monitor, and it works pretty well: on my laptop screen I have my main working applications, and on the side screen (iPad) I have Mail and Skype, which I always have to have open due to work. It works flawlessly :)

i just installed it in 2 iPads and i can't get it to work at all with my macbook pro 2013 early.
I can see the desktop, but no mouse movements or trackpad .
How do you use it ?

Stupid idea for a problem that doesn't exist.
Btw why would you need 2 screens "on the go"? OSX solved this already with multiple desktops.

I know its a niche area but for video editing on the road this is excellent.

And FWIW I tried this last night with my 2012 MBP and iPad 2. After a few attempts I got it to work and had a play with FCP X.

I have used Air Display before with FCP X but you can't use it for the viewer, just the browser. However with Duet I was able to put the viewer on the iPad and play the clip quite happily. Might be a bit of audio delay which will get me at some point.

But I can see myself sitting in a car, airplane or hotel bar editing with this set up sometime.

Be great when the 12" iPads come out.

Do you know in general how to set up a second screen in OS X?

Yes... But when i connect ipad via cable, i cant move the cursor with mouse or trackpad.... Its flickering
I have the latest yosemity 10.10.1 and ios 8.1.2

Hey Guys,

I'm the developer the app. Glad to see so many people like it, and just some heads up:

Don't purchase if on iOS 5.1.1. I do plan to support it very soon, but test flight is sadly only iOS 8. Was only able to test on a handful of devices and there are issues that you should wait for to be fixed.

Don't use if you are on the 10.10.2 beta. It is buggy, not duet. Hopefully those get sorted out soon.

Obviously the better your Mac, the less lag and CPU drain. This is not mentioned enough. Also there are several optimizations I put in that greatly reduce this. I think the effect is pretty overstated.

If you run into any issues, email me. I'm sorry if it takes a bit right now, it's just me and launch day can be hectic. But I promise I will resolve all of your issues.

Hello
My duet app on iPad 2 with iOS 6.0 just crashes.
Cannot open.
Any advise besides upgrading?

Thanks so much for making this app ! as a student I carry both my Mac Book pro and iPad mini at school and I find my self setting up both of them next to each other a lot for homework. When I am doing assignments that require me to look at a formula sheet a lot this will help ! This app works great for me I set it up and I have had no issues there is a small lag but it is not bad !

I had been waiting for this app for a few months, so I purchased/downloaded it yesterday.

I'm using an Air 2, plus a nMP 6,1. That should be enough horsepower for anything! :D

It seemed to work OK, at first. I don't remember the exact chain of events, but at times the windows got "lost" and I wasn't able to move them over to the iPad Air 2. I ultimately had to reboot. Maybe this is an issue with the Mac app? I uninstalled it, for now. This might end up being a good app, after the first major update release.

Chrome became unstable after I installed the Mac app, and started working again when I uninstalled it, possibly it's conflicting with Chromecast - is anyone else having similar problems?

I installed it on my mid 2012 rMBP, and iPad Air 2. CPU utilization was extremely high when I bumped up the settings. Also, not sure if it's related but my Mac kept freezing up. I uninstalled it and contacted Apple for a refund. Maybe I'll buy it again after the developer releases some updates.

Does anyone know what's involved to do a full uninstallation? Is it just the app file and the display driver, or is there more required?

For me, running the uninstaller did not clean everything up the first time. After a reboot and a re-running of the uninstaller, the app and the kernel extension were successfully deleted.

A.

So I've used this a couple times with a game I play. It works great! I get very little flicker. I just need a stand for the iPad to get it closer to me, but the performance is top notch.

I'm using it with a 2012 iMac and 2013 iPad Air, and it's been great. No problems installing and getting started, it just worked. I haven't tried videos but with the productivity software I use there is virtually no lag. I have it set to the lower fps and resolution, maybe that's why.

I generally have Omnifocus open on the iPad and whatever documents I'm working with on my Mac. Touching the iPad screen puts the cursor right where I want it and also functions like a click, or will toggle a check box on or off. Nice hybrid of Mac and iPad functions.

I used to work with the iPad and Mac running side by side and I was forever typing on the Mac keyboard when I meant to edit something on the iPad - now I have a seamless solution for using both devices and love it.

Narrow minded post

Just because *you* can't see a need for something doesn't mean others can't. I work in a small studio where there isn't room for another full-sized monitor, nor do I need one...but what I do need is a way to view an audio switching control panel program on the Mac while I have switched my main monitor screen via KVM to another computer's output. With my iPad clamp-stand-mounted on one side of the console, I can now control audio inputs and outputs for the entire studio without having to keep KVM'ing back to the Mac to do the switching on that screen.

In the living room, I use a Macbook Air to work on web sites while relaxing on the couch. Now I can have my web code open on my Macbook and the live-updating web page open "full screen" on my iPad. Works great, and solves a problem I was having with trying to view both the code and the web page on the same somewhat-limited laptop screen.

Those are just two extremely helpful applictions of this software... but then, I've only had it for about 24 hours so far; I'm sure I'll find others.

People need to curb their negativity and think a little before posting their opinions.

Decided to take the punt and pay the £7 for this app. Been wanting to get a bigger display for a while, but with 21:9 and 4k still being at infancy really, I want to try and hold off a while. I can place this below my display for all my toolbars etc. Performance seems great under quick testing.

For reference my system is a rMBP, 2.5 i7, 16Gb, 750M. All tests performed on battery.

Thoughts:
- Works as advertised
- Required both devices to be rebooted again to get it to work nicely
- Non Retina is sharp enough when working with a non retina display
- Can't seem to use any scaled resolutions on my rMBP, just goes black
- 60fps works great, my use is mainly for static things so not needed really, but appears to use no CPU with a static image
- Retina also works fine, even at 60fps.
- Yet to try it at my desk situation, but seems like it will be ideal.
- Stress testing it on Retina60 with a 4k60 YT video playing, video is almost smooth, CPU is at ~15%. Cursor is a little stuttery, but is also running another retina display. Pushing a lot of pixels.
- Kicking that test down to 1080p is perfect, like a native display.
- Touch works fine, support for multi touch/scrolling would be great.
- Dark Mode menu bar is an issue, keeps changing but not fully so everything is black.

Thank you for the honest impressions!

I was having other issues with 10.10.2, so I downgraded to 10.10.1, and Duet is now working well with my Mac mini (2012) 2.6GHz i7, 16GB RAM and my iPad Air 2 64GB wifi. There is a steady processor load in the range of 50-60% of one of the 8 virtual cores (7-8% overall) with the iPad running at retina resolution and 60Hz, but that's a fairly modest load for this machine. I can watch videos via Plex Home Theatre and Plex Media Server either on the main 2560x1440 display or on the iPad screen without increasing the processor load further. I'm typing this post on my iPad while watching a TV show via Plex on my main screen. Touch works to click on links, move a cursor in a text window, or drag scroll bars, but the utility is limited because OS X isn't optimized for touch.
