I tried using it with Premiere CS6 with a 480i SD sequence using a late 2013 2.3Ghz MBP with 16GB and an iPad Air. It was dropping frames like crazy. This was on the 30fps and regular resolution setting. I was hoping this would be good as an external monitor on the road when editing, but with those results I would rather just watch the canvas. Playing a 720p m4v in Quicktime wasn't as bad, but it would still drop about 12 frames every second or so. I would not have bought this had I known these would be the results.

WOW, just discovered this!

I'm a big Splashtop fan. Splashtop works great, and is very useful, HOWEVER, I can only use one at a time, as if I try to use native res on the iPad its all pretty bad. Also, it can crash, as many of you know. This solves that issue (I think :D)

Anyways, I was going to buy Air Display (again :( ), but a smart reviewer steered me there. Not sure what humongous bugs i'm going to encounter (there always is). But i'm a little excited (hence this post :) ) I do notice that a fluid, external HDMI like experience this is not. But my uses are much more modest. What i need is a stable document reader, and a visual display for 'reletively stationary' apps

As far as cpu usage, when things are stationary it burns about 12%, which is about what Splashtop uses. That's with just a stock configuration, Air 2, Macbook Retina 15". I imagine it ramps up pretty quick though.

Is anybody else having issues with Safari after installing Duet? My machine was running perfectly before I installed it. After though, Safari hangs and freezes on certain pages. I uninstalled it, went back to the same pages in Safari and they loaded perfectly. It's a shame because I really enjoyed using it. I'll wait for an update and try again.

Sounds to me like this could be pretty useful, even if the frame rate is weak. I'm thinking:

- control palattes for things like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc
- a text document or an email open off to the side for reference
- a chat window

30fps is clearly not suitable for video or graphics, but there's still plenty I do on my computer that would work just fine at a lower framerate.

Apple should send this guy a new cable.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed that I still have to plug in my iPad to my laptop (will it drain my laptop battery more quickly because it's treated as charging my iPad?). When I first head the news, I thought that maybe someone had found a way to establish a connection directly via bluetooth and wifi (sorta like how the Apple TV3 does airplay mirroring). :(

OTA display extend for OSX and iOS already been out there for quite a long while. Just that it lags. This time pretty much about cable hacking.

Duet FAQ
By default, CPU usage is about 60% when you are actively doing work and drops to about 10% when there is little activty

60% is too damn high.

So are they saying I should use the second display as a photo frame? Isn't the point of this app to help people increase productivity?

It leaves me confused, that none of the available applications made use of the functionality Apple uses for Airplay Mirroring on Macs (e.g. encoding the second screen on the GPU/CPU) which brings CPU usage down to almost nothing..

As far as feedback, the display on iPad Air 2 running 8.1.2 seems elongated, all the letters and images and pulled vertically a little bit. The display isn't quite as sharp as I'd expect from retina either, even at retina, high frame rate, high power.

And the dock keeps popping up even though I have the second display set to be near the menu bar at the top rather than the dock at the bottom

Me too. When Duet auto updated me from 0.9.5 to 0.9.9, the display on my iPad Air 2 got squeezed in the horizontal direction. I'm running 10.9.5 on my late 2013 15" MBP.

UPDATE: After talking with the developer, an uninstall and re-install of the Mac app fixed the horizontal squeezing issue. I've tested version 1.0.7, which he told me is coming down tonight, and it's working flawlessly so far. It's nice that he was so responsive.

Good report and good news. How is your CPU usage running?

Has anyone noticed a major improvement since the recent update that was released today I think?

Didn't get a chance to test 1.0.7 much, but 1.1.3 is working very well. CPU usage is significantly down from when the app was first released. After running the same YouTube video in it's own fullscreen Chrome window on my iPad that I ran in my initial test, the attached image show the Activity Monitor CPU history. For a while, I couldn't hear the fans at all. Near the end of the video, I could barely hear the fans. I really had to listen hard to hear them. This was running Duet at 60FPS, Retina resolution, and at the High Power Performance setting.

Also, grabbing a screenshot using command-shift-3 properly captured both displays without any flickering.

I have an iPad 4 and a late 2014 rMBP. I downloaded both apps, plugged my iPad in and it just worked immediately, I didn't need to set up anything. I was pretty impressed. I have it at 30 FPS and regular screen resolution. There is a very slight lag while moving the mouse, but as others have said it is hardly noticeable. If I crank up the settings it gets kind of choppy though. I might use the Retina setting if I have something stationary on the ipad screen like a pdf file for reference because in Retina setting the screen quality is a lot better, the difference is huge. But it's a tradeoff between screen quality and how fluent it works, so it depends on what I'm using my second screen for.
All in all it's a nice app, I definitely don't regret buying it.

Wish I read this before purchasing the app. I purchased and downloaded for both iPad and Mac but it wants to install some drivers and restart my Mac. I haven't done that yet as I am very careful about what I let into my Mac. Is it safe?

Yes, it's fine. It adds a taskbar icon, which is where you would make adjustments on resolution, frame rate, and performance. Outside of that, you won't notice anything visibly from the install.

Keep in mind that when you are actively using Duet on battery, there will be a noticeable difference in battery life, as this thing is doing a decent amount of work when displaying on the iPad.

I've had no issues with the software or drivers; I also have Little Snitch installed and haven't seen the Mac app "phone home" for anything except to check for updates, which can be done automatically or manually. FWIW, the apps were promoted as being designed, at least in part, by former Apple employees. I've been using Duet with both an iPad Air and iPad 3, with my rMBP and Mini Server - the latest versions have been solid so far.
