Who needs iPhone XC with LCD if there is iPhone XS with OLED?
If you can pay 600$ for XC, you can pay 800$ for XS too.
Its 200$.
Who cares?

Add $100 - $150 to your prices and you'll be in the ballpark. However, there are quite a few people who would like a larger phone for $200 less expensive and would be willing to give up AMOLED display and dual-lens camera to get it.

While I will admit most Americans are of the "what'll it cost me per month" mentality and there is a smaller segment that has money to burn and simply doesn't care what the price is as long as they get the best, there are still some of us who think long-term and realize that would be an extra $200 in our pocket with no real-world sacrifice in utility unless you really needed the better camera.

Of course, to you $200 apparently is nothing, but multiply that over other purchasing decisions like vehicles, furniture, appliances, clothing, dining out, etc. and you will find that being frugal while not sacrificing utility can result in very significant savings over one's lifetime.

I thought Apple was trying to be patriotic with those colors... but they would be red and yellow in that case.

Requiem to my preferred form-factor for one-hand use: the iPhone SE. Death by silence. Death by thousand cuts.

Second that.
Note that the edges of body and lens have their color shockingly different, and mismatched, to the color of the glass back.
That says fake!
Even if they’re not fake they’re clearly unfinished. I remember seeing iPhone 5 leaks that looked awful. The finished product had way more polish.

I think one of the main reasons why the "what is the monthly cost increase" factor exists because of the marginalized difference to others. People will be like "$200 over 24 months, that's only $8.33 per month extra on my bill."

The $200 could be huge for investments or a rainy day fund. I use "do I need it or want it" to make my purchases. I will probably settle for the XC since that difference isn't worth it long term. Though, I may consider buying the iPhone X on clearance instead.

CPU likely, camera unlikely. In my opinion.
I believe the 6.1 LCD will have the same main camera as the XS. The difference will be in display technology, Less RAM and no telephoto lens. If Apple provide the same camera as iPhone 8 in the 6.1" LCD model, the it will simply not sell. People will flock to the 8/8+

You could be right, we'll see.

That blue color looks pretty awesome, I that is close to one of the colors Apple actually makes. That said, still not sure what my next iPhone will be, currently have a 6s and feel like that size is perfect for me, so I don't really want to go much bigger. I'll have to wait until the new models show up at the Apple so I can try them for myself. Not sure if I'll be getting an Xs (size wise should be similar to my 6s, just depends on pricing, I still can't mentally justify spending $1400 CAD on a cell phone), the new 6.1" (Xc or whatever they end up calling it, will depend on how I feel about the size) or an 8 (sticking with a form factor I know I like, plus I'm still not sure I'm sold on FaceID).

Main camera will likely be the same, but it won't have the second camera and therefore won't have (optical) zoom and portrait mode.

Some like the SE not for the entry level price of $349 but because they like 4.0” phones. I don’t think they would be happy with a larger phone like 5.2”, so it would probably be even less popular than the SE, last updated in 2017. Soon 4.7” may be the smallest phone.

Well, a 5,2" iPhone X would be smaller than 4.7" current iPhones, and pretty close to overall SE size.

The issue for those who like the 4.0” display would be one-handed usability, not actually being able to hold it. Just because the physical size is smaller wouldn’t necessarily make it any easier to move their thumb from the bottom left to the top right. The size of the screen matters; there were plenty of one-handed usability complaints when 3.5 became 4.0. Those with small hands can’t cover 4.7” let alone 5.2.

It makes sense, but good tech is hard to make really small. They are expanding on components and features and space is a premium. I don’t think the market justifies such a small phone unfortunately. I’d think an X design around the size of the iPhone 8 would be the closest people will get. Who knows though, there’s rumors of an SE 2 so maybe you and some others on here will get what ya want. Hope so at least. I understand why Apple wouldn’t keep up the SE, but it’s atill a bummer for those that want it.

Apple needs a $349 or less phone, but most customers would rather have a larger phone than a small phone whatever the price point, e.g. a 6s at $349 rather than an SE at $349. Most people simply want larger iPhones, whether $349 or $999.

re:market size I think you’re right; I doubt there’s anywhere near enough demand for a small X-type iPhone, especially an OLED-priced one. People spend $700-$1,000 on an iPhone because it’s a good computer, not because it’s a good phone.

Hitting that price point is a good argument. Maybe that low end price point moves to $499 at the max though. Somewhere in that range they could probably come up with a compelling product.

Hitting $499 could be quite a problem though. The 6.1” LCD is rumored to be around $699, and just making the display a little smaller doesn’t necessarily make it any cheaper. Due to (lack of) economies of scale, a smaller iPhone could well cost Apple more than the 6.1”, which is expected to account for as many as 2/3 of sales of the new models.

In any event, I think we’ll know which way they’re going by next spring, or fall 2019 at the latest.

I agree, it would be tough. If they could take the guts of an iPhone 7 and put it in a X like casing, it could potentially work. You’re right though, we’ll see what happens.

Yeah it would be easier to make that price point using older tech. Maybe similar to the SE: some older parts, some features omitted, up-to-date CPU when released but with a three year shelf life; relatively unchanged throughout its life cycle.
