'Dune Case' for PCs Copies Mac Pro's Cylindrical Design

I'm surprised Samsung didn't ape this design for their line of Galaxy PCs.

It's a pity that no trash can maker didn't shut down the new Mac Pro project before it was released to the public.

It shouldn't be a pity as a lot of those trash can makers probably benefited from this design. Many Mac Pro owners probably purchased a similarly designed trash can to accentuate their new desktop. I certainly would.

The thing's about half useless anyway. There's no way to fit a standard GPU in it except maybe the R9 Nano. You're probably going to be stuck using the stock CPU fan which will thermal throttle the **** out of the damn thing with only one case fan. And I bet it's going to be super loud with that single case fan right on the top having to run at full blast to cool a hot system. Nobody's arguing they ripped off the Mac Pro design, but it's a terrible rip off at that considering half of the Mac Pro design went around designing that crazy heatsink and quiet fan to cool the whole system.

$160 is incredibly steep for an m-ITX case that offers nothing that some of the more expensive cases do, and there's plenty of strange form factor m-ITX cases already. What a waste.

Haha the video is like an attempt to copy Apple's design videos! The white background and name with title under it off to the shoulder of the person, it's quite funny actually! If only there was a British guy doing the voice over

An "innovative housing" my a**. Taking a page right out of Samsung's book. Try less hard Dune Case, you can't.

The ultimate hackintosh case.

Until Apple make a fricken Mac Pro-Sumer this is what we're stuck with having to do. Where's our i7 with dedicated and user swappable gpu.
We will get the ability to run an external GPU, including a GTX 980ti, thanks to Thunderbolt 3, which this fake Mac Pro won't have. :) I'm only half serious. That would be useful for a MacBook, but a desktop computer ought to have user-swappable GPUs. And yeah, Xeon w/ ECC RAM is overkill for most.

There is something to be said for Apple's hardware. It's a lot nicer than anything one would build at home, especially in terms of airflow.
[doublepost=1455945459][/doublepost]Wait for some Android fans to complain that Apple tried to patent the cylinder

The thunderbolt gpu chasis are very very interesting. However we know right now they're very expensive, driver support is a huge issue also.
The only good working ones I have seen a proprietary...

I'm all for it existing and for Apple to give us a Mac mini or MacBook Pro with a optional thunderbolt chasis... I'd be all over it. We kinda need Apple to support it... For bootcamp also.

Command C (and every other shortcuts) is easier to press than Ctrl C. And that's it for me. I know you can remap the keyboard but that might break something.

Do you have an easy shortcut to cut/paste files in the finder?

No? I did not think so.

LOL! Yeah right! Bahaha.. If you can't get regular off the shelf GPUs to work on the old Mac Pros in PCIe slots, what makes you think more complicated external GPUs will work? Especially in laptop form? The energy draw from a 980ti is insane, a laptop would probably burn up. You'd need an additional power supply.

Just bite the bullet and build yourself a hackintosh if you want a real GPU.

The reason Apple went with a cylinder for the Mac Pro is because the components were designed to fit in a cylinder.

Simply shoving standard PC component into a cylindrical case isn't quite the same. And the fact that it look so eerily similar to the Mac Pro is weird. There's no doubt that they are trying to emulate the body of the Mac Pro. It isn't an accident.

There are plenty of small Mini-ITX cases in all shapes and sizes that support more than two SSDs and tiny video cards. You can get them that even support watercooling.

Hey Guys .. Thanks for all the comments here .. let me address a few of the concerns .. First thanks for your interest. It has been one year in the making. Using standard parts was a challenge to fit inside a cylindrical case. There were so many suggestions to say "yeah good enough, it works" but it didnt satisfy me. I wanted this to be tidy and easy to access. Ofcourse there are going to be limitations with size. but we were able to create this case the best of our ability and one year later you have dune case.

Lets talk about the design. First the parts used in this case can only be mini ITX and SFX psu. All small factor. We design this from the ground up.

The front panel is a custom built pcb with custom sized cables that feed to your motherboard and GPU. these connectors are also custom build so that is has enough clearance to mount. The cable from the front panel is channeled to the psu holder and then through the middle of the case and to the peripherals. The front panel will also have a mini display port options if you perfer that.

The PSU holder is very unique. This houses the PSU and also isolates the air flow into two sections of the case, CPU and GPU. The air then travels through these sections and the 140mm fan on top of the case helps pull the hot air through.

I have spent a year building this case. When doing this we did do our due diligence and seek professional legal advice. And based on that we spent one year building something for the community.

I hope you all like what we have done. We have had this ready for production and no short cuts have been made in design. This case is made out of high grade aluminum and not sheet metal like many PC cases. This is simply a different take on the PC case. Days of discussion has been talked about from connectors, placement of mobo, gpu, cable management and thermals. Please rest assure we looked at all that and it took one year not 1 months for a quick sale.

Here are some picutres of the 4 prototypes. One year later we have the Dune case.

Maybe they should stop while they're ahead. No way this thing is reaching market. Why are people so brave when it comes to Apple? Their lawyers will have your lawyers for breakfast.

Just stop mate. Apple WILL sue for this. There's no way you can fight that. Scrap it and come up with something original. Even the icons on the product page look copied. There is absolutely no denying the similarities.

Whats the use of having a GPU slot, when you only have a HDMI 1.4 port on the case. 4K needs HDMI 2.0 to get 60hz. This is Dead on Arrival.

Nice try though.

I don't think Apple can sue this, obviously it looks extremely similar but so does a lot of the macbook pro imitators, AND the core concept of the 'unified thermal core' design which is actually the main appeal of the mac pro's design, is missing here.

The unified heatsink in the mac pro is quite genius, one heatsink and fan for all, cpu and gpu. Apple probably got a patent on that, that's actually something that I'd like to see in the Wintel world.

Thanks JarScott.. Really appriciate your deepest concerns .. When doing this mate I wanted to have a new approach to the PC using standard PC parts. If you look at what I have done the inside of the case is original and the door to access cable management and HDD is like no other and innovative. This is simply a PC case not a desktop computer with a triangular heat sink and custom parts... many readers have expressed there concerns to me but only researched at a glance. I have quite a lot of time with legal advisers out of my own pocket before moving forward. As said this is a PC Case not a desktop computer and there had been prior art before 2013 that is cylindrical design .. once again thanks for your concern :)

Thanks for sharing and posting your work here. One issue I see is 4k monitors, I see you have 2 hdmi 1.4, but it seems a lot of the monitors would need display port or hdmi 2.0 as someone mentioned here for full 4k 60hz support.

Hi there .. I have updated that this will use HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.2 due to popular demand .. I am listening to the community :) ... I hope that helps

Hi There Sleepyshibe .. This case is for Mini ITX .. If you look at my earlier prototypes I really wanted a full size GPU .. after prototype 2 it just didnt look right and was too tall... If you look at the quality of material of this case .. it fully anodized and use High grade aluminum and not sheet metal that is stamped. We also use CNC process to refine edges to get that premium look...

two piece aluminum vs single piece aluminum

aluminum.png

if you look at the two pieces one was done to cut cost and the other is from a single block ... the problem with the cheaper alternative is that when you weld a piece together there is a high chance of air bubbles in the welding and when polishing and anodizing there may be uneven finishes in the coated paint. when using a single block of aluminum you will not have the problem...

In regards to temps I went to Hong Kong from Sydney were the humidity was 85-95% and 30-33 degrees Celsius. I used Prime95 for CPU and Furmark for GPU 100% stress test. CPU temps were 57-59 and GPU was 65 degrees celsius.

It may not be in the price range for some but those that know manufacture could appreciate the price point. Thanks mate :)
