I've got one speck of dust and a tiny fiber of something underneath the glass, but I'm not going to let it bother me because other than that the phone is perfect, so I'm not going to risk getting one with a dead pixel, etc...

Dust under glass-iPhone 3G

Taking the screen out.
What is did was follow the "iPhone 3G Disassembly & Screen Replacement Directions" youtube tutorial. But instead of using a caseopening tool i used a strong suction cap (my son's bath duck had one on it hehehe) and genlty pulled the screen out! Worked perfectly cause you will not damage the rubber seal this way.
I can confirm that the screen is now in two parts. And dust can easily find it's way in. It's a matter of time i think.
btw i removed the small "do not remove" sticker from inside the iphone. I guess i won't have to take it back anymore. 😀

Both my 3G 16GB black and my wife's 3G 16GB black have a speck of dust under the glass. You can only see it in direct sunlight, but they're still there, and it sucks. But what can you do?
Well I had the light leak problem, and I took it to one Apple store today, and they told me that they would document it, and nothing else. Then I found dust under the glass on the side of the light leak, and took it to a different Apple store this evening and albeit them not having any 16 gig whites in stock, they did order me one, and it should only take a week or so. If you have dust under your glass, take it in and you should get a replacement.
iZayn, I really like the idea of using a suction cup rather than a case opener tool. Did the suction cup cause any damage or separation of the glass from the touch panel? Did you have to pull very hard? And did you place the suction cup directly over the home button? Do you have to be concerned with the suction cup...sucking out the home button?

manicmac it did not cause any damage at all. And the lcd panel is attached to the touchpanel with 6 screws. So I did hold the iPhone firmly and just pulled with care. Slightly building up the force. Once the bottom is open the whole screen comes out easily.
Holding your iphone upside down, I placed the suction cup just beneath the home button (over the docked icons)

I totally agree! I am a perfectionist. So what i did was look for dust in bright sunlight. To be honest, i cannot see the dust under normal conditions.
Save yourself a lot of trouble and do not go searching for a few specs of dust. Just enjoy your iphone. 😉

Hah, and I thought I was all alone in my quest for perfection. Yeah, so I've got white dust forming under my screen and just the simple fact of knowing it's there is driving me nuts. I actually spend $15 for insurance from Best Buy and all they or Apple could really promise me is that I could get a refurbished phone as a replacement, but as someone else posted, who's to say that it will be any better?
My iPhone is perfect other than this "little" imperfection so I just keep telling myself to get over it and don't worry about it. I don't want to risk screwing it up even more by trying to take it apart and clean it, although I've been very close several times now, lol.

I hope you're ready for a long and educational post. Here's what happened.
I set up a genius appointment at my local Apple Store. Well, when I got there, the guy said that he cannot replace my iPhone for dust under the screen because he said that dust gets there from dropping the iPhone or getting it hit. I wasn't too upset... I just said... okay, thanks and went on my way.
Here's the fun part!
I finally decided that I wanted to just take my iPhone apart and get the dust out myself. After watching a couple youtube videos on how to disassemble the iPhone 3G... it looked really easy to take apart the stuff that *I* needed to get at in my particular situation. Here's what I did:
1. Take out the 2 small screws at the bottom of the screen near the dock connector
2. Take a small suction cup and attach it to the glass and pull up with a little bit of force. (Not too hard as to rip it from the electronic connectors)
3. Undo the 3 tabs that connect the screen to the rest of the iPhone. Undo them in numerical order. On the 3rd connector, you have to use a small tool and pull up on a little white piece that is securing the tab in place.
4. Unscrew 6 screws that are holding the digitizer on. Note: Some of the screws are under black tape... so look for those too.
5. Gently put a little pressure on the frame that is holding the digitizer on to pull it off. I recommend slightly bending the metal outward on both sides and GENTLY wiggle the digitizer out. Warning: Some people have cracked their digitizer by trying to force it out... it should come out gently and easy.
6. Once the digitizer is disconnected from the glass, remove the dust. I used one of those little hand squeeze blower things that you can get at a camera store for blowing the dust off of lenses and such. Don't use compressed air.
7. Re-assemble the iPhone.
8. Here's where I had some trouble. I had trouble re-connecting the LCD connectors #1 and #2. You have to get them just right and then press down on them with some force and you'll here a click sound. The first time I did this, I didn't press them in hard enough and parts of my touch screen would work and some parts wouldn't... it really freaked me out.
9. Put the bottom screws back in and reboot your iPhone.
I got all the dust out of mine and I'm happy again! Good luck to anyone who wants to try this. By the way... you can't tell at all that I opened my iPhone up... it looks just like it did before I started this (minus the dust of course).

i have a small brown circle about 3 pixels in diameter. When i drop my iphone, it moves around. So i have to repeatedly hit the phone until it moves off the screen, it currently resides in the lower left corner. Weird ****.

I have a few specks of dust on my iPhone. I can only notice them when the screen has a white backround. It does get annoying, but I think I can live with it. I just don't think it will be worth the trouble to get a new or refurbished phone as a replacement. If it does get any worse I think I will ask for a replacement. I haven't heard about the light leak problem until I read this post, I think I may have a little bit of a light leak. I don't know if the dust has gotten in from there or not but it does seem viable. I'll search the fourm for the light leak problem.

I had my phone replaced a few months ago due to dust being under the screen on my 3G.
Guess what, new phone, same problem. there is a light leak on the side around the glass, so that could be why it got behind the glass this time.
I'm going in to get this one replaced next month before the new one comes out.

Do you think dust under the screen will be a problem with the new iPhone when it comes out? I have 2g iphone and work in a really dusty environment and have never had a problem with any dust getting under the glass. I didn't upgrade to the 3g because of all the reports of dust getting under the glass. I would like to get the new one when it comes out but not if it is going to get dust under the glass like the 3g.

I wouldn't think anyone would know for sure. Just looking for opinions. If you don't have any reasonable input, why would you reply like a smart ass?
They glued the LCD and glass together on the original iPhone, but chose to split them up on the iPhone 3G in order to make it possible to replace the glass without having to swap out the entire LCD assembly. It also seems Apple's quality control has gone to hell (at least with the iPhone). Both of these things have allowed dust to get in the screen, and seeing as Apple has yet to fix ANY of the 3G's manufacturing defects I would fully expect the new model to follow more in line with the 3G's quality instead of the original's.
In short, it's quite likely many of the same defects (including the dust) will be "features" of the new iPhone. 😡

Yeah, I had dust one one of mine that got replaced recently (for something else). I assume the dust gets into the small gap between the bezel and the glass, and then somehow migrates into the viewing area.
I have an iSkin Solo on my iPhone now though. It's a tight rubbery case that fits over the bezel so I don't think any more dust will be getting in (whenever I take the case off to wipe the screen, there's no dust particles where the case was). The new iPhone they gave me is perfect.

I had several pieces of dust under my screen after dropping my iphone. I now only have two miniscule pieces left. I literally tapped them to one side of the glass by banging the side of my iphone against my knee. I also left the alarm on vibrate for ages while the iphone was on it's side, which may have helped dislodge them. I did contemplate strapping the iphone to a palm sander (orbital sander) to see if that vibrated them out the way!

Yea, I had at least 3 noticeable ones. The quick fix for it, though, was enough to make me happy.
