Apple replaced my dusty screen 2 days ago. Took 10 min. and no hassles. The genius even told me if I got a yellow screen as a replacement, he'd replace that too. I did in fact get a screen that is a bit yellowish, but it's contrastier than my previous screen and I'm keeping it.

Do you have Apple Care or anything? When did you first get your phone?

Just had mine replaced outside of the 12 month warrenty 2nd time in 14 months for dust issues. Some of the ones he brought out had the same issue so he opened a brand new one. My 3gs is holdin it's own though.

i had mine done for the 2nd time a couple weeks back and they said that it was to be the last time. i guess apple said that they contributed the dust under the screen is due to drops.... i think that is BS because I have never dropped my phone.

furthermore, just checked my iPhone this weekend and i has some more dust particles under the screen! whatever, not going to stress about it, the anti-glare screen protector hides some of it.

Dang. When I had my first 3G replaced for cracks some girl working at the Apple store checking people in at the Genius Bar gave me crap and said it was my fault. However when the Mac Genius saw my phone he replaced it. Hopefully they fix this issue. I've never dropped my phone, either, and apparently quite a few people are having this problem. So much for quality control.

Well I took my phone to O2 and they sent it off seeing as it was still under warranty but failed to tell me that warranty only covers me for software faults.

So they quoted me £131.00, what a waste of time sending it off. They also said there was nothing else they could do but I kind of had a pop at them then remembered I have insurance. Haha, bitches sent me a new iPhone the next day.

:p

thats not right. in the US they go out back and swap it out in like 5 minutes... At any Apple Store.

Screen replaced last night. Genius said to come back if there are any other problems of the same sort.

every Apple Store/Genius is different in my experience.

if one says no, then just head to the next one (if applicable)

My phone is loaded with dust particles and fibers. I also have multiple scratches and light leak. Maybe one day I'll go get it replaced but right now I have a perfectly working phone and thats what I paid for.

What do you think about this scheme?

I have a 16gb iphone 3G with dust under the screen. If I take it in to be replaced, the apple store will likely NOT HAVE any 16gb 3G's but they WILL have 16gb 3Gs phones in stock. I will not settle for a 8gig phone, so do you think they'd upgrade me for free?

I'm thinking they might have to since they'd be obliged to do a replacement, and they can't downgrade me...

They have plenty of 16 gb 3g refurbs in stock, at least in my experience.

damn. There must be a point, though, when they'll be out of refurbs, right? I wonder if it would work if I tried it in mid october.

Maybe. They're still replacing the original iphones Under apple care with original iPhone refurbs and it's been two years so they're getting them from somewhere.

I'm going in this weekend for dust under the screen on my third 3G (first had dust, second had dead pixel). It would be nice if I somehow was upgraded to a 3G S, but I'm not counting on it in the least.

I would imagine it could happen if you had extended applecare and tried to exchange after the 4G came out.

I've actually given up. Dust is just too common and I dont feel like getting another year of apple care just for that. My current has two bits of dust and I've never dropped it.

I just got went to the Apple store for two tiny dust specks dust under the screen of my 3GS- once you know they are there, they're hard not to notice. They said they would fix it, and it would be ready in 20 minutes. I went back to my car and was reading the work form- it said for the solution "replace display". I'm thinking "sweet, new glass with a fresh oleophobic coating, but what if they do the whole case?" I didn't get my hopes up though. But they did- they replaced all the external components- new back casing, new glass, new surrounding metal band, and possibly new buttons (they were already unblemished, so it's hard to be sure about the buttons). Bottom line, it looks like a brand new, right out of the box phone, and I didn't have to go through the hassle of doing a restore to a new phone and reconfiguring all my settings, etc., not to mention taking my chances by replacing a perfectly-working phone with something not tested and put through the paces. This is much better than a replacement for me (and most customers, I would guess), and I'm sure it must save Apple a bundle.

dude, they just gave you a new phone from the sounds of it

i wasn't aware that they could replace the entire casing

I've had my glass replaced twice before and it's looking like I'll be going in for a third round. Noticed some more under the glass last night. I'm going to put up with it until I notice more or get annoyed by it enough.

Considering this will be the third time I'm going to request a whole new phone and stop putting up with the crap on this one.

I just had mine replaced for the third time as well. To the poster who had Apple tell them it was the last time: they can't do that. If they've replaced under warranty before for the same issue, they cannot refuse to do it from that point on. Call it a lemon if you want, but they have to replace it.

dust inside my iphone 3g

Hello everyone,

I am glad to see everyone sharing the dust problem in iphone 3g here. I have the exact problem and the particles all over my screen now. I went to the Genius bar twice (2 different locations) but they neither replaced my phone nor cleaned the screen. They said the water sensor was turned on and they cannot work on it or replace it anymore.

I am really frustrated about this. I am paying around $80 every month for this dust-filled iphone. Can anyone please guide me what to do? I really appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Iphone 3gs dust

Took my 32 gig phone to apple store i n atlantic city nj where i bought it.."genius" said it was cosmetic defect and no way to stop it. Got worse took it back again I said this is not cosmetic its a manufacturer defect and the same "genius" said that it is on a defect if it comes from apple with dust. So I am sending it to Apple.

I had dust accumulating under the screen of my 1 month old 3gs and took it to the apple store. The person who helped me wasn't even a "genius" but one of those specialist guys. He took a look at my phone and said that the only way for dust to get into the phone is if it was opened. I was pretty mad on the inside since he pretty much accused me of opening up the phone when I didn't. Luckily a genius overheard our conversation, stepped in, and told the guy to replace the screen.

For the first time in 9 months or so since I got my 3gs, today I noticed a speak of dust under the glass. With in half hour of noticing it was annoying the he'll out of me. Went straight to my nearest apple store, well 30 miles away, but well worth it, after a little wait a brand new 3gs in my hands. Nice!
