Qmaster is the encoding engine used by Shake and Compressor (and therefore FCP 4 and above as well as DVD Studio Pro 2 and above). IIRC, iDVD 5 now uses Compressor's encoding technology (which uses Qmaster).

Thank you for your explanation.

hmmm

the only one i had in my software update was the pro support 3.0

... i should see the codec and dvd player updates too.

is there something I'm doing wrong? why wouldn't those show up?

Things are kind of messed up being between 10.3 and 10.4. Some people say they see some things in Software Update and I am seeing others. I want a definitive update like 10.4.1 There is no question what this update will be for.

No you don't I have seen on my iBook. All you need is QT 7.
How's the framerate? Hit command+I (the command or Apple button and the "i" at the same time). Play the trailer. Notice how many frames are being dropped.

not cool...i was living happy in my ignorance, thinking how nice everything looked on my screen and how wonderful this h.264 stuff was. then you suggested doing that. I'm only playing at 16 fps or so...now i'm sad. but, it still looks good and loads fast, so i really can't complain...

Does anyone think that the codec and/or new DVD player will be bundled with 10.4.1?

Likely, or no?

That's three updates so far that never showed up in Software Update...Java 5, iTunes 4.8, and DVD Player 4.6. What's going on?

DVD Player 4.6 problem

Everything is running fine except one thing, the open Video TS folder have change to open DVD media. I can't open some Video TS folder on my HD anymore?!? did Apple remove the feature? or it's a bug? anybody have the same problem?

Yeah, I'm really curious.... if it's a pattern that's going to continue, I'm kinda annoyed. :(

Sneaky avatar there Rod Rod.

But yeah i have done the upgrade, but i think this upgrade only really applies to Pro usuers...i see no differences or at-least yet.....
Do many people use DVD player???? Because neither on panther nor on Tiger have i opened it yet....

funny, ive only ever watched DVDs on my PB, never on a PC. well, apart from Matrix 1 when i first got my DVD-rom drive years back

Well add one more user that only sees the AIC update in Software Update. I know of iTunes 4.8 and DVD Player 4.6, but didn't know there's a Java update?

Damn, hope this isn't a new trend.

I find it awfully silly that QuickTime 7 and this new codec are compatible with OSX 10.3, but DVD Player 4.6 is not. What could POSSIBLY be Tiger-specific in the DVD player?

I'm not seeing any of the updates on my PM. I haven't even tried my PB yet... I'm assuming it's the same. ITunes still hasn't shown up on it.

I wonder if you have to have certain software installed to see the AIC update. I have iLife 05, but iMovie is not installed -- I only have iTunes and iPhoto on the HD. And I also see nothing. Lalala, I should probably stop posting gripes about this topic.

NO FAIR!

This is GONE! I used to rip a DVD or two to a external drive and be able to watch them in DVD Player from the VIDEO_TS folder. This is gone now (in 4.6). May have already been gone in 4.5.

EDIT: It's ok. It's now Open Media file instead of open VIDEO_TS. Works fine.

DVD Player is "recommended for all users", yet it says I need 10.4 to install it - thanks Apple, I'll stick stick with my current version on my archaic Panther OS. ;)

^^^ I thought their wording was a little misleading as well. I guess this might explain why some people are seeing this update in Software Update and others are not. I downloaded it manually before seeing the 10.4 requirement in the fine print and it wouldn't install, of course, since I'm still running Panther.
