Between the high pricing, lack of ports, and poor performance, this Retina MacBook is no longer even slightly tempting to me.

So this cpu is on par with an i7 from 2011, i think it is an overall good macbook

For those of you who are claiming this is no big deal because the new MacBook is not for professionals... keep in mind that this machine is priced exactly the same as the 13" MacBook Pro.

And it has less ports, less options, less CPU power...

But hey, comes in more colors!

Pro:
-thinner
-retina display

Con:
-expensive
-huge compromise on ports
-horrid performance
-keyboard takes time to get used to

it's everything I moved away from netbook for. I was so sure about buying one during keynote, Now I am seriously needing to rethink that

iPad Air 2 has roughly the same score as this Macbook.

Is it a Joke? Not really, however, I genuinely believed that the Macbook was supposed to be the iPad Pro with docking station with keyboard.

Then this shows how powerful is Apple with designing chips right now...

Apple have been good, but if anything this shows how the market has changed and how Intel has taken energy efficiency at the expense of performance. We haven't really seen any substantial performance increases from Intel during the last years. Instead they've focused heavily on reducing power consumption while trying to preserve performance.

are aggressive hordes going to continue pretending they are an intended consumer target for this new macbook for how long..? few weeks..? til next year's refresh when it's more than apparent that you were never *supposed* to be interested in, let alone buy this machine..?

this thing is perfect for people who grew up on iPads who need OS X who can't wait to get their first BT mouse. THIS is the iPad Pro. it's making me fear the 12" iPad will not have OS X and just give you a few ports for the work you do in pixelmatr and iOS Office 365.

The performance should be perfectly fine for the target market, especially with 8gb RAM and a decent GPU. It's kind of odd that everyone expects so much out of 1st gen device. Size, weight, battery life have been proven time and time again to be favoured by Apple customers, especially those who need an ultraportable notebook. Apple isn't looking to please tech geeks on macrumors; they're looking to satisfy the needs of customers they have tons of analytics on. This design will pave the way for future MacBooks.

That's because it's not for professionals.

Nothing wrong with the speed for most users given the SSD and 8 GB of RAM. What's wrong is the price!

If this was $899 like the 11" Air it would sell like hot cakes.

When did Apple ever bill this machine is a powerhorse? If someone needs power get a rMBP. The 15" will most likely be updated later this year, including the new trackpad.

Am I the only one left who wants CPU horsepower over battery life?

Nope, there's still plenty of us around. I actually have a 2011 MBP I'm looking to replace, I wanted to buy a mac but it looks like windows is in my future.

Asceticism at its best. They should include a Zen brochure with a title

"how to train patience and get joy from waiting while staring at the rotating coloured disc"

It's not horrid performance. I have a 2011 MBA, and it runs all of today's software very well. It's not pro-level performance, but it's totally reasonable for the kind of tasks this is meant for.

I also think it's wise to reserve judgement on the keyboard until they are available in stores to try. Judging keyboards is very subjective - I wouldn't want anyone else's opinion over my own.

That said, I think this Macbook is a total "don't buy" due to the compromise on ports and the fact it's first-revision hardware. Just like the 2008 MBA started off as a don't buy, and the 2010/2011 MBAs were bulletproof, I hope this will similarly mature.

I don't get it. Why are so many people whining? This machine is for someone who wants a computer to do email, web surfing, watching videos, listening to music, word processing, photo viewing, etc. It's a machine for the 90% of Mac users who don't do video encoding, photo rendering, video editing, etc. If you're in the 10%, this machine isn't for you. If you're in the 90%, it's a great ultra-portable with 100% of Apple's design efforts going to thin an light.

Stop whining. I didn't whine the last time they released a 5 pound macbook pro saying how silly it was that they had all those ports that are of no purpose to me for MY usage.

apple didn't stop selling pro machines when the rMB went into production.

Exactly. That is a huge sacrifice for the sake of portability if you pick the macbook over the 13" retina pro.

Well for those wanting an iPad that can run OS X and multi window multitasking, here you go. That's pretty much what this Macbook is.

I had the 2011 11" Macbook Air, and the 2014 Macbook Air and they basically perform the same. Though I'm not doing video editing, it's my ultra portable computer I travel the world with. I'm not sitting in a hotel in Shanghai to edit 4K video while I'm traveling, nor editing photos on a 11" screen, and the user this is designed for isn't either. This is a fully capable laptop for the 90% of Apple ultrabook users who check email, surf the web, and listen to music and watch movies. If you're not in that group, move on, stop whining.

That's pretty much the future of mobile computing.
