what a joke

How so? The CPU draws about 1/3 of the power as an LED light bulb. The new MacBook isn't for power users. It is for road warriors looking for something that can be thrown into the front pocket of a briefcase. Heck, it will fit into the padded pocket of a Tumi messenger bag I have. It reminds me of the original MacBook Air from 2008.

Don't quite get the hate of this machine. I think it's gonna be an awesome consumer product for the right (most) person. This is coming from a rMBP 15" kinda guy. I only need my pro for my work related statistical programs etc...and plan on using the new 12" Macbook for my primary use outside of work.

That's so 2011.

Okay. I get it. It's got no fan. It's not suppose to be uber powerful. But 2011 Air powerful?

I think I'll wait a few versions.

Exactly. That is a huge sacrifice for the sake of portability if you pick the macbook over the 13" retina pro.

3.48 pounds compared to 2.03. that's not a negligible weight difference for someone who runs around to meetings or chases their toddlers while they check their google calendars.

if you only email, netflix, Skype, and run a few excel documents on your computer (like the vast vast majority of computer users), what on earth do you need a macbook pro for? they aren't sacrificing jack squat.

"The New MacBook: Facebook Edition."

Because, really, that's all anyone really is going to be doing on this toy.

For those of you who are claiming this is no big deal because the new MacBook is not for professionals... keep in mind that this machine is priced exactly the same as the 13" MacBook Pro.

And it has less ports, less options, less CPU power...

But hey, comes in more colors!

Yeah, I was considering it at first but it seems the performance will be too weak even to my light occasional Photoshop work.
I guess the rMBP 13" is a winner here but I can see this Macbook selling well because lots of people will only do internet and mail on it.

I knew the corem wasn't that fast, but i didn't expect being as slow as an ipad lol. It's basically an ipad with keyboard. It should cost $900, not 1300.

For somebody carrying a notebook around all day (not me), the tradeoff in ports and performance for better portability but with a retina screen is perfectly acceptable. Are you an exec, journalist, blogger, web coder, student who's always on the go? Perfect notebook. USB-C sticks and gobs of other peripherals are just around the corner.

Toy? You can sill run writings software, Office, iLife, Lightroom (with reasonable performance).

I think dismissing this as just a dumb toy is a bit unfair.

needing photoshop on your computer puts you in a minority demographic of computer users. probably a smaller one than i'd even guess.

And you think those task merit a $1300 Mac? At most get the air unless you want to throw money away.

It is grossly overpriced and there is no question about it.

Nope.

We can have both CPU horsepower and battery life if Apple stops with their thinness obsession.

Their flat obsession started when Jony started to get more control over their product line. As long as he's still around, expect this obsession to continue full speed ahead.

Trust me it will handle light photoshop. Your not planning on large raw files being batched processed are you. All this from a benchmark test that we are not even sure is real

Between the high pricing, lack of ports, and poor performance, this Retina MacBook is no longer even slightly tempting to me.

There's the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air, and if you can deal with a desktop, an iMac of two sizes, a Mac of the Mini variety, and even a Mac Pro for you choose from.

;)

Pro:
-thinner
-retina display

Con:
-horrid performance

You do realize that there are many 2011 MBAs still in use today and *GASP* they manage to function! This isn't a professional grade hollywood production device, but we knew that. It is a couple hundred dollars overpriced, but it's new and we knew it would be.

You can run Adobe apps, VMs, and Windows on a 2011 MBA so this new MB should fit its target demographic.

"oh no! i can't learn how to encode 4K video files or play WOW online with maxed out graphic settings! oh, apple, how you have failed this real estate broker! how could you, i have 3 kids to feed! curse you apple!"

- literally no one

Nope.

Why can't Apple make a crazy thin MacBook for the people who value portability and sleekness over power or crazy battery life?

They already have a MBA line with crazy good battery life and a MBP line with great performance. The MB is just a new line of products that doesn't match your needs.

A couple hundred dollars....so like 25%-30%....
