Are you sure? Because Schiller went on about the iPhoto books in the keynote. I believe they now have both a glossy book cover in addition to printing on the actual cover.

Also, they got travel maps. :D

ok i stand corrected. thanks. ill take a deeper look, the travel maps idea is nice, havent tried it, but lets say 2 new book templates?? sorry but that basically means they tied more resources to the GPS function than doing book templates around it.

it essentially means they only had 1 guy working on a template or 2. didnt know glossy was new, but ill check it, that is the most basic change, they were matte before i guess. not a big offering, nice to have. but i'd like to see a leatherbound book option like Shutterfly has ... click on link to look

PS i went to Best Buy a day early on this. happy to get it and play with it early.

I'm more curious about the general feeling towards iMovie. Are those that went back to 06, that are now trying 09 pleased? Will they "upgrade"?

We're pretty much forced to upgrade because of CPU optimizations, among other things. iMovie '06(HD) had a lot of third party plug-ins going for it. I could be wrong, but I don't think iMovie '09 has that to offer. Apple wants us to pay $199 for Final Cut Express, which is pretty lame.

Mine arrives today (yay!)...

Does anyone know if it installs OVER the old iLife? I have several websites on the old iWeb, and if this one's too crazy/different, I'll need to stick w/ the current version.

Only the Applications change, not your content (iWeb user data). iWeb has only minor changes/improvements. Nevertheless, you should ALWAYS back things up before upgrading any software. Thank God for Time Machine! =D

Does anyone know how to go about updating a new MacBook with iLife09?

I bought a Macbook last week and was wondering if I could pick my upgrade at an Apple Store for $9.95 if I brought my receipt in with me?

Has anyone had any luck or results?

I really hope I can do this because I want it now, I don't want to wait for it in the mail!

Even pets do not recognize faces.... that is why they sniff each others... well you know...

Well I kinda doubt that sort of recognition will be coming to iPhoto anytime soon. :D

Does anyone know if they improved codec support in iMovie? '08 was kinda lacking, compared to '06HD.

The iWeb interface appears easier to use. Its more integrated with your photos, music and movies.

Garageband looks cool, i'm gonna borrow a guitar and keyboard to try out the lessons. My bro is pretty good with a guitar and piano. I can only play a small riff of star wars on his piano and a decent "When the saint go marching in" lol. Man i'm pathetic.

"MIDI quantization" shall be your new friend.

I'm going to wait to hear more reports before I decide if I want iLife 09. There is really not much in it for me as I've moved on to Aperture, Final Cut Express and now Logic express.

If iPhoto and (1) access an Aperture library and (2) tag each phot based on the people in it. Then that feature alone is worth $80 as I have thousands of photos in the library but early reports are that iPhoto is only getting about 10% to 20% correct. A worse than failing grade.

I'm also very interrested to see if Garage Band's new music lessions are more than "fluff" I don't know yet. It is certainly possable thae Apple has packed the equivalent of the first two years of piano instruction and music theory inside GB. PDF versions of common music books only take a few megabytes each. Apple could fit an entire library on the DVD. There is a lot of good content around they could have licensed, but I'm suspecting "fluff".

I'm an iWork 08 user and I checked out '09. Not enough in there for my to give Apple $80.

Something that's surprised me is the fact that you have to buy the Artists' Lessons through the online Apple store. I assumed it'd be like buying a song from iTunes.

I agree with your assessment on Apple's thinking. The problems is that broadband and Apple products are required. DVD is ubiquitous. Under Apple's paradigm, I can't send movies to my sister in rural Missouri. No broadband, and I'm not mailing my iPod touch just so she can watch one movie.

Especially considering that the dtv switchover is most likely getting pushed back 4 months because of the number of people in the US who don't even have cable tv. It just doesn't seem realistic to phase out a super cheap medium like DVD (by super cheap, I'm referring to the fact that you can buy a DVD player for around $25)

If you run a "lab of Macs" then perhaps you should be thinking about using Pro software rather than Home software? There's a reason why Apple differentiates these products, you know ...

Cheers

Jim

Not if you are teaching k-12. I run a lab of 30 macs using WGM with home directories. I wouldn't go near iMovie 08. It is not like traditional NLE at all. I have 06 installed on everyone and that's what I teach to the students.

In fact, the kids all download 06 at home.

Now my advanced students use FCE, but they still save to their home directories.

I advise you to go through the whole face recognition stage without loved ones nearby. iPhoto has a rather rude way of telling you your ex-girlfriends look just like the new one.

Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Not everyone travels the globe

Well I've just about completed tagging all the people in my iPhoto library. Seemed to work ok, but needed a lot of prompting. Very rarely did it actually put a name to a face, but most faces were detected.

However, I'm have a lot my problems with "Places". I live in England and most of the places I've taken photos in can me linked to a local town or city. Great. Except it's impossible to search for most major UK towns. They are just not found. When you do drop a pin on the map, for some bizarre reason, the location is given as a nearby village???

Most of my location tags now just have "England -> Other -> Place Name". Google maps seems fine via the website. It's a shame I can't edit some of the location tags. I wish it would include the county information, rather then just "England".

Looking forward to the next update ;-)

Daniel

A perfect example of where a 3rd party plug-in would be needed.
I was excited to see the maps/globe elements added to iMovie09 when it was shown at MWSF. It was mentioned that 4,000 locations are in the database.
I am in the same situation as you Daniel. Many of my photo projects are regional. Locations around me are nowhere to be found in iLife09.

Would be nice to see Google step up and provide a plug-in for this, or something like that.

I would mainly use iPhoto out of all the iLife apps, and am really interested in the face and geotagging features...would you care to tell me if it's worth the upgrade alone???

What about the geotagging accuracy? Are we able to insert new places if iPhoto doesn't find some of the most remote ones?

Here's another CONFIRMED successful test:

iPhoto 09 was able to tag and identify my previous 3 girlfriends breasts!

LOL

Mine should be in today. It's interesting to see all the reasons people upgrade to ILife 09, or don't. For me it's all about the new features in IMovie.

Has anyone figured out if iMovie HD '06 and iMovie '09 can co-exist on the same Mac? My Dad didn't upgrade to '08 for the usual reasons, but doesn't want to have to convert all his '06 movies to '09 when he upgrades to '09.

Cheers

Garageband lessons look neat. It only comes with the beginner lesson for piano and guitar and you have to download the other 8 lessons for EACH
instrument. These run between 250-500MB each, so they can eat up space quickly if you dont have much left. I have i think 3 more lessons to download and the folder is already at just over 4GB (library->app. support->garageband->lessons)..

What is the "level" of the 8th lesson? Are piano students playing with both hands in keys other than C or time other then 4/4 or does it go much slower. What are guitar students playing by lesson number 8? If each lesson is 500MB there could be a LOT of content there. That equates to hours of .mov files per lesson. Maybe I'l have to go into an Apple store next week and see what's in there.

I'm particularly miffed after I spent about 40 hours making a biometric recognition system for my dissertation a couple of years ago, and it worked better than iPhoto

That's probably because that's your chosen field of study. Why would Apple's employees be better than you at it? You should release a face recognition API, or go see Apple with your system and see what they say.

foshizzle - when I go into iMovie '08 and choose New project, it only gives me the option to select the aspect ratio - in iMovie '06 you would also at that point be able to choose the folder for the project. If you could tell me how to specify the folder, that would be great. I must be blind because for the life of me I cannot find this option (and our Apple engineer couldn't either - their solution was to set up symbolic links to a local folder). I would like to just save to a local folder that I have already created that the students have access to. Its not a bandwidth issue as we also have gig ethernet - its a space issue. Thanks!

I'm wondering if foshizzle is thinking of when you export a movie under the "Share" menu ... then you could choose the location.

In defense of apple, 99.9% of iMovie home users would not care where there project is stored ... just get it done so grandma can see the kids in action. Apple may have wanted to keep it simple as possible to quickly create a project. But I do see your point ... especially when you think students like yours may end up buying iLife to get the iMovie they are familiar with.
