I wonder if you can print multiple photos without wasting paper in iPhoto again (like you used to in v3 or something)?

Answering my own question here. Printing seems to be unchanged. So if you want to make economical use of paper you are still best opening the photos in another application. Dumb. Why did they remove such a useful feature all those years ago?

I have a couple of questions:

First, when you manually add a face tag to an image (by adding the box and positioning it over the face), does iPhoto include that data in it's learning algorithm for future face detection?

Second, is there a way for me to show only the photos that have detected a face but don't have a name associated with it? I mean instead of scrolling through photo after of photo of already tagged photos looking for unknown faces.

iPhoto did not recognize my parrot's face at all...

Then I saw it recognized the wheels of my uncle's chevy. iPhoto thought they were faces... lol

The second post or so mentioned that iMovie09 brings back the "chapter" feature for DVD creation.

Can someone confirm/point me to the relevant article?

(I am still using iMovie HD6 (even if I have 08) simply because of this. The workaround for 08 was horrible and implied a double export.)

Oops

I was hoping that iPhoto '09 would easily finish the task, but instead I've come to find that all of my keywords are now gone.

Wow. I was wrong on that one--my keywords are still there. But again, if you do want to tag something in iPhoto that isn't human, keywords are one way to go.

I'm enjoying iPhoto, but am finding the facial recognition feature odd. It generally seems to be working very well. I was impressed how often it has been able to recognize pictures of my 3 year old daughter in photos - even in pictures from when she was an infant - she has changed so much in three years and I'm surprised that it so easily makes the connection. The odd thing is that my wife is nearly invisible, it seems, to the function. Not only does the program frequently identify many other people - who I don't wish to tag (strangers in the background, for instance) - as her, but it often doesn't even recognize hers as a face in a picture. In a family picture with all faces well lit and fully in view in the picture, every face but hers will have a box around it.

She's got two eyes, a nose and a mouth - and they're all in proper proportion, as far as I can tell :) - but she just doesn't seem to register with the program! For the frequency with which it seems to see faces in tree bark and the speckles in granite countertops, it seems to not see her an inordinate number of times.

Early iLife '09 Notes and Impressions

I've only played around with iPhoto and I bought the upgrade mainly for Faces and Places. After spending way too much time tagging Faces last night I've come to the conclusion that their facial recognition needs a lot of work and that I don't care...it is still a great and addictive feature.

I'm not evaluating Faces only as a facial recognition feature, to me it is a great way to add the most relevant meta-data about a photo...the subject. The facial recognition worked for me about 50% of the time and I view this as a convenience feature more than anything. The ability to tag each person (or pet), browse using faces and export/sync with Facebook including the tags is worth the upgrade price to me.

I do wish Apple had focused a bit more on the failure case with facial recognition. While you can manually add faces it could be easier/faster to do with a few optimizations. For example, let me just draw the box around the face rather than having to add a box, move the box and resize the box. I would also like the option to manually add a face but exclude that face from influencing the detection algorithm. Perhaps this happens by default (if anyone knows I would love to get the answer) but I manually added many faces that were actually the back or someone's head or a profile shot unlikely to aid in future face detection. I still want to tag them in the photo but don't want to screw up future detection.

Now on to try out iMovie.

Well, I bought my copy today. So far so good. Just been playing around in Faces and Places mostly. I've noticed the locations weren't quite right for Europe. Photos I had taken on my iPhone in France, Germany, Austria and France said they were in the Atlantic Ocean.

Overall, I like it. I will give iMovie another shot soon, the last version wasn't that great

imovie 09 keeps crashing!

I installed iMovie 09 I decided to edit a project that I created in imovie 08 and update with the new transitions etc from imovie 09.

Once I was finished editing I then clicked re publish to mobile me as a large video. The video is approx 300 megs and said it would take 2 hrs to upload to mobile me.

I left it to finish overnight and I woke up to a message from iMovie 09 saying it had been successful. However, when I checked on mobile me the video was there however it didn't have any of the transitions that i just added.

I then removed the file from Mobile me and published again as a tiny video just to test it wasn't anything with the file being to big.

This time the upload worked. however, since then I have not been able to remove any of the video's from mobile me and I am unable to edit the projects and re publish to mobile me. I can however create a new project and upload but once it is uploaded it cannot be removed.

iMovie just keeps crashing everytime I try the above and i keep getting the spinning umbrella icon and that would last 30 mins or longer until i would select a force quit.

All of the above activity I use to do with iMovie 08 without any hassle.

I verified the disk with Apple care and tried logging as a new user and restarting and that has not fixed the problem. They also checked that mobile me servers are working correctly.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else is having this problem?

I have sent them the error report and they forwarded to the engineers to diagnose.

Also not sure if this helps but the projects are primarily photo's with maybe about 3 minutes of video footage.

Thanks in advance.

I am seriously considering buying iLife '09, but I was also planning on getting the new Snow Leopard when it comes out.

If I buy iLife '09 now, and then I buy Snow Leopard (which comes with iLife '09?) wont I essentially be buying iLife '09 twice?

What's the projected time until Snow Leopard comes out? I'd be willing to wait 6 months if it meant saving me money from having to buy it twice.

Has anyone figured out if iMovie HD '06 and iMovie '09 can co-exist on the same Mac? My Dad didn't upgrade to '08 for the usual reasons, but doesn't want to have to convert all his '06 movies to '09 when he upgrades to '09.

Cheers
SL

I had Ilife 08 and Imovie-HD 06 on my machine. Upgraded to Ilife 09 and Imovie 06 is still there and seems to work. Believe it or not I used 08 more than 06.

You are way ahead of me! I cannot even get iMovie to run!

29.01.09 01:29:15 com.apple.launchd[124] ([0x0-0x1a61a6].com.apple.iMovie8[4024]) Exited abnormally: Trace/BPT trap

I tried deleting all plist files, uninstalling iMovie and reinstalling it but with no success. I had the same issue with iMovie 08 too...(since the last update)
I filed a bug report with Apple...

I don't believe iLife is part of Snow Leopard. iLife isn't even part of Leopard. It's installed in addition to the OS. iLife just comes WITH the Mac you buy.

If you buy Snow Leopard as a separate disk, you'll (if Apple holds true to past practice) you'll need iLife separately as well.

Oh yeah. One more thing! iPhoto should sync the Faces tags with my Address Book! Maybe they'll include that in an update. It makes no sense to have all those pictures that have been painstakingly tagged only to have them exist only in iPhoto!

Yes chapter (and comment) markers are back. Just make sure "Advanced Options" is turned on in the preferences.

no - iLife is an application (albeit one which comes preinstalled on new macs). Leopard/Snow Leopard is the OS and they are separate. They only way to get iLife 09 is to buy it, or buy a new mac with it pre-installed.

Here's another CONFIRMED successful test:

iPhoto 09 was able to tag and identify my previous 3 girlfriends breasts!

LOL

But how many hours did it take to get thru your entire pron stash? :D

That's a great idea! To be able to tag a massive porn collection by actress! 

Thanks for clarifying!

Thanks for second post! After reading your first post thought new iPhoto would delete the huge number of keywords I've added to my collection - that would be a real downer!:(:(

Just to confirm, keywords are intact but separate from the 'faces' database? Has anyone converted a large (>30K) library? Any problems?

Also would love to read about any fellow hold-outs still using iMovie HD6 and if now is the time to convert. I own iLife 08 but stuck with the old iMovie for precise edits and since the linear editing method seems more intuitive to me. Comments?

Faces is working pretty well for me except I have two brothers who look very similar and it is having difficulty telling them apart.

One thing I do like about Faces is after I have dragged pictures up to the upper window and I don't have any remaining "suggested" photos in the bottom window, I can select all of the photos and add a Keyword for who the person is. This way I can add the keyword in one step rather than having to go to each individual picture and add it. Also, the Keywords I had setup in '08 came across fine and I did not lose any that had already been added to photos.
