You are right on sales number point mate. No question about it. But why iphone has high number of sales in last few years? Biggest reason I see is they started making bigger screens and two models per year. Before 2-3 years iphone sales were struggling in front of growing market of larger screen phone. iphone 6/6+ came up with larger screen and results are rocket sales. Still iphone is super quality phone among all big players, I am not complaining about it. But most users who uses iphone since early years didn't welcome this flat UI change willingly. Its just feels like, somewhere in race of marketshare iOS does work but it lost its charm!
I'm not sure that it's most--it's definitely some, but hard to say if it's even a majority. But whatever the case is, the sales of iOS devices and the fact that the design kept on going for already 2 more major versions of iOS means that Apple doesn't see it as a mistake or something bad. It's likely the design will get updated at some point again (and perhaps not that far in the future), but not really because this design isn't working out for Apple, and mostly because they'll need to keep up and keep things fresh and new to appeal to many existing and new customers.

Go, lemmings, go!

Smart users are gratefully waiting for you to report how steep the cliff is.
Plenty reports that things are mostly just fine, with some people experiencing issues here or there--not really different than many x.0 releases, especially from the past few years. Short of some people with the oldest supported devices, most will be left with the same decision and the same level of information they already have whether they want to consider updating now or some months down the line (the only thing that would really be different is if some minor updates come out that might have something new or different).

Most people I know are waiting until the weekend because they are phones they use for work. I expect this number to grow a lot by Monday. I updated the moment it was released and it's been running great so far.

I like the update because it saves space and is faster. I didn't really need a stack of new gimmicks.

I only upgraded my 5S mainly because I don't want to lose my jailbreak on my 6+ and iPad. I just wanted to try out 9.0 and I didn't mind sacrificing my 5S to do that with.

How is the update on your 5s?
I forgot to mention one problem I have found, and that is with making text larger under the accessibility setting.

I upgraded my phone yesterday evening after getting home. It was a seamless process that took maybe twenty minutes in total [download time included].

It's just a cell phone. You're not applying for a new job, deciding to marry someone, or joining a drug trial... There has only been one iOS update ever with a showstopping bug (8.0.1 on the 6 series)... of course a single dropped frame is a life-altering event for some people, so there's that.

Adoption rate is slower because peole are finally figuring out the BS with iOS updates. Wise up, Apple and stop ruining our older devices with these crap OS "updates."
Hm... so you're tell us that Apple should cut off products early and not offer software upgrades. Ok. Advice taken. One iOS upgrade is fine, I mean, anything more then that is just going to cause problems. Everyone should be updating every other year, anyway. It is DECREED by or dear leader Tim Cook.

Or get an Android phone so you can be certain that you'll be stuck with whatever version of the OS it originally came with.

I am still honored to be running iOS 6.1.4 on my iPhone 5; enjoying fluidity, smoothness, and a classic look.

I miss the good old iOS 6 days when the phone felt fast and responsive and the Music app was pleasant to use.

Though I'd miss things like Control Center.

It's a bit Apples-to-oranges, of course, but it's interesting how incredibly rapid the adoption rate of at least this mobile OS is compared to desktop OSes.

Windows 10 is much more comparable than most desktop OSes in that it's free, it was advertised like crazy, weeks before its release there was a popup in the corner of your screen encouraging you to upgrade whether you wanted to or not, and in some cases your computer will download it automatically even if you didn't ask for it, and the most recent OS it's replacing is widely reviled. Apart from the last one, all those things are similar to things iOS does to encourage rapid adoption.

Yet even then, iOS had approximately the same adoption rate ten hours after release as Windows 10 did after a month. I suspect the curve will also be a lot flatter longer term, given that prior to Win10's release XP still had almost 10% share and Win7 was at 53%.

I think the fact slower adoption rate with iOS 9 and further OS'S could be because users are wise-ing up on the fact not everything goes smoothly, thus, holding off longer.

i.e I upgraded within 24 hours last time to iOS8, but none of my devices will be upgraded to iOS9 till i see better over a few days what negative users have.

Am I the only person who has never had a problem with iOS 8?

When I downloaded it on my iPhone 5 last year, the download and update was quick through iTunes. Compare this to my iOS 7 update two years ago that literally took hours to download and 'verify'.

Performance was also extremely smooth and bug-free on my iPhone 5, iPad Air, and iPhone 6. There was no slowdown from iOS 7 on my 5 and Air.

iOS 9 downloaded fairly quickly, but the performance leaves much to be desired on all my devices. There are dropped frames everywhere and that delay between tapping on an app and it opening. My iPhone 6 feels slower than my iPhone 5 was on iOS 8. The iPad Air is also struggling to run animations and I've noticed a lot of lag for the first time.

Believe it or not, the lay people doesn't have the concept of "OS updates" in their mind. That's why Microsoft is pushing Auto update on Windows, because if not, majority of users will simply sitting with the GM version of Windows forever.

All iPhone users so far that I have met, that are lay people, have a notification badge on their Settings icon, which means they have not applied whatever OS updates available (and if I check further, they pretty much have whatever OS version that came with their phones out of the box).

This might also explain why Android can get away not having OS updates and security patches, and nobody seems to be bothered.

At the risk of breaking their arm off, Apple satiates their hunger for a pat on the back and self congratulations.

It's not like we had to search for the file, manually download, unzip and install it.

Apple pushes it out, lights up the red app icon in our face accompanied by a dialog box shouting at us. One uneducated click and Apple pounds its chest. How modest. :D

I'm not surprised at all. The number of customers who come into my job with their iPhones showing 0 bytes of available storage is shockingly high. Many of them see the updates, and say "don't have enough space, I'll do it later" and never do. I had a customer just last week preordering the iPhone 6S, and their iPhone 5S was still on 7.0. It hadn't been updated since he got it launch day two years ago.

He was getting the 64GB because he said he wanted to do the updates now. He had no idea that updating through iTunes didn't require anywhere near the same amount of storage to be free. The same seems to be true for customers who've only had iPhones since OTA updates became available (and those who thought iPhones just didn't get updates prior to OTA, haha)

yay, I just woke up to read this story and did not realise iOS 9 was out. Gonna pull the trigger and upgrade the iPad Air 2.
