I've had no issues at all with my iPad. It does take forever to charge though, but the first charge lasted over 10 hours for me. I even used the wifi from my iphone and had no issues. Internet on this guy is blazing fast. USB charging for me, I didn't notice a difference whether it was in sleep mode or not.
 
Wifi

My iPads wifi works fine but the signal indicator does fluctuate where as my iphone is consistent. Again this being said the performance was not compromised.
 
And this is why I don't buy the 1st generation of any company's products, no matter how cool they look. I hope that these issues can be fixed via software updates - I can imagine how frustrating it can be.

The WiFi issue aside, how is the USB charging "problem" even a real issue? You can't expect to charge every electronic device off of a USB port, especially if it's a low-powered 1.0 version. It's not like Apple says the only option is to charge it off USB; they give you a freakin power adapter for a reason.

I can't run my toaster or microwave off of my laptop's USB ports, but that doesn't mean those devices have problems.
 
Never buy the first generation of anything... specially Apple products.

While I understand the general sentiment, I don't agree with Apple is being singled out as worse then most.
If anything, Apple products are pretty solid out of the gate. Sure there are significant improvements over time, but their Gen 1 products are functional, stable and offer a refined user experience.
Examples:
First iPhone compared to first Android or WinMo
First iPod compared to Nomad
First AirPort n-router compared to Belkin

And if you do have issue, Apple has been far better then their competitors at addressing them.

I may seem that Apple is bad, but that's only because you have refined tasted and hold Apple to a higher standard.
 
Have had wifi issue w/iPod touch

When I bought my 2nd gen iPod in Jan 2009, wifi was rock solid and had full bars all throughout the house. I believe OS was v. 2.0. A few weeks there after, I upgraded to 2.1 (? I may have the wrong revision #).

Disaster. Low to no connectivity. Bars jumping up and down. Made appt w/Geniuses and let them know that everything was fine until the update. No help. OS 3.0 was on the horizon, so I waited a bit, figuring that surely Apply must have realized their mistake and would cure it in 3.0. Nope.

Ended up moving my router to a more central location and adding an access point to "cure" the problem.

Anyone else have issues w/iPod touch??

I have a couple 802.11b clients on my network, which I know affects everything, but these clients have always been there, even when I first purchased my iPod touch.

Are those of you experiencing issues w/iPad connectivity have any a or b clients? Any of you w/o issues NOT have a or b?

My WiFI connection drops out, and it seems to forget my password. This morning I was browsing the web then backed out of Safari to go into Weatherbug. After checking the Weather, I went back into Safari and it asked me to connect to a network. I chose my network, then it asked for the password. I didn't move around and normally my signal strength is fine. This has happened to me several times. I have my network password sitting in notes so I can copy it back in when the iPad forgets it.

I hope it's an easy software fix.

Just curious you wouldnt happen to have Fios would you, both my Fios Routers are having this issue. It seems to forget the password on these. Other spots and connected to a hotspot works fine with no issues.
 
I have WiFi issues at my office at the university. My office is on the periphery of the WiFi signal but always supplies my MacBook Pro with a full signal. With the iPad I get about one bar. It is actually pretty damn frustrating.
 
USB charging

USB was never meant to charge a device. In fact only when USB was discovered to have a separate pin that could be utilized for power, the intent was to provide limited power for devices while connected. Thus why most external USB hubs with more than 2 ports have an A/C adapter to provide extra power.

My iphone and my wifes older camera (before it died) used a USB charging type of connection. both of which take forever to charge if connected to a USB, but charge much much faster when plugged into an A/C adapter. Also because your car battery puts out less voltage and amps, my car iphone (and an older charger for a very old video camera I had) take a long time to charge via the power plug / cigarette lighter.

Most people do not read manuals, but if you ever do - you will see on keyboards and monitors that they state the USB may not provide sufficient power for charging devices and it is also advised not to connect external drives that are USB powered to a monitor or keyboard USB as the power may not be sufficient.

if you are looking for quick and appropriate charging, us a wall plug or one of the belkin power strips with USB. just beware of the amount of amps and voltage it puts out, as the adapater supplied with your ipad (or other device) may put out less. Not using the original adapters can result in frying your battery and devices.

with that said and my post over the wifi signal - I think most of this (unless you have a truely defective device) may fall into user mis-understanding. if any question, take your device to the apple store and let them know. as long as you registered your apple care warrenty, you do not need the paper work. they can look it up.
 
No issues with wifi through a dual band N wireless router, have full bars even when I am down in the basement (router is two floors up).

I think the wifi issues must be ipads with a defect, because ours are getting perfect wifi reception, even getting far away signals.

First of all, most of us aren't having wi-fi problems with our iPads.

Secondly, I'll let people in on a little business secret...if nobody buys a 1st generation product...there won't BE a second generation of that product. So this subliminal dig at people who have bought the first iPad is both illogical and counter-productive to your own needs.
 
It's funny seeing all the Rev. A comments. I've had a lot of Apple products over the years and I can safely say most of them have been "Rev. A" in nature.

The worst being a Santa Rosa MBP (which I'm typing on now, was actually a rev. c I think) that had to have 4 screens and a new power button from new.

My Rev A. iPhone, Powerbook 12 etc didn't have any problems.

Of course some people are risk averse. If you're like this you should wait. Others like getting the bleeding edge.

Y'know it's fun like that. This is a new style of device, the adventurous want to get on that as soon as.

Here's a tip for you -- it's sometimes FUN to be bleeding edge, warts and all. My iPad so far hasn't had any issues. Go play with your JooJoo and pretend to like it, you're harshing the iPad mellow. :D

Yes, this is true. There are psychological benefits to early adoption, albeit there are definitely costs. What amazes me with respect to the iPad is the amount of negative emotion expended by people who do not approve. I say, buy it and have fun, if you can afford it and are normally the early adopter type. Others, wait for Rev 2.
 
Have the 32G iPad and have not experienced any significant problems with WiFi connections. The bars aren't full 100% of the time, but that's no different than my laptop. There's an occasional fluctuation. Overall, the iPad technical performance has easily been as good or better for web browsing and streaming media (like Netflix) than the laptop.
 
I love the Haters, we have a few at work, that think just because they don't have a use for one then no one else does. Hey no one's forcing you to buy it, but If I have to hear you run me down one more time for buying an Ipad....

Or maybe they are jealous...
 
A second issue experienced by users has been difficulty with charging the iPad via USB. A number of users have discovered that their iPads refuse to charge when connected to USB ports on some computers, an issue that Apple has stated is due to the required power draw for the device. In a support document posted on the issue, Apple recommends that users charge their iPads by using either the included power outlet adapter or high-power USB 2.0 ports.The iPad's charging demand stems from its large battery that drives a significantly hungrier device than most mobile handhelds users are accustomed to charging via USB. Consequently, lower-power USB ports have difficulty keeping up with the iPad's draw, especially when the device is not in sleep mode.[/b]



Another perfect example of how poor USB is for such devices.

Standard USB hub ports can provide from the typical 500mA [2.5 Watts] of current, only 100mA from non-hub ports.

In contrast, FireWire can in theory supply up to 60 watts of power, although 10 to 20 watts is more typical.

Apple should have provided a separate power cable for iPad. Expect to see customer's with fried USB ports.
