i think you definately have a point there. I'm in two minds about it, after all I would have ordered an iPhone 12 without the magnets and a slightly bigger battery.

But I guess this is apple being apple, they have to do something different from the competition and it does somewhat solve the alignment issue which allows for effecient faster wireless charging. I'm just not sure how important faster wireless charging is, i tend to charge my phone slowly overnight which is better for the life of the phone. Early reviews don't show the cases slotting on and off the phone easily like the marketing video suggests either...
The only good use for "wireless" charging is in the car. Being able to charge your phone and use CarPlay without having to worry about the cable is really nice. On that matter, I have a question that may be a dumb one: will the magnets help the phone align with the charging coils in the car or does that magic only happen with MagSafe-certified accessories?

Too bad. X60 is superior. ☹️
What are you talking about, that modem is not even available yet.

Dang. Was hoping for X60. Guess it wasn't ready.
Yes and according to Tom’s guide the X55 isn’t faring well with battery life under 5G. This truly is a transitional device. Still, I will most likely get the 12 Pro Max but yeah the first thing I’ll do in settings is turn off 5G completely and just leave it on LTE. Just ride it out for 11 months and then I’ll definitely will be selling, upgrading to the iPhone 13 or whatever they call it

Calling it now that the lighting port removal will be justified with a bigger battery after they put a smaller one in this generation
Well why Samsung builds-in 4000mAh battery in same form factor (S20) while making even slimmer devices, Apple just takes a step backward. I can think of two reasons. They are just incompetent or the marketing guys follow a weird strategy 🤦‍♂️

X60 design isn't even final and Qualcomm is still shipping samples. X60 in iPhone 12 was never a possibility.
There were rumors about Apple getting The x60, possible back room deal(conspiratorial), in June 2020 articles. Guess not

I know people will disagree but those magnet rings cause weight in these new phones. I personally feel MagSafe on the iPhones is a gimmick and not a must have feature. I’d prefer no magnets and allow more room for a larger battery. Every yr Apple adds a new feature that forces them to decrease the battery size. force Touch ID tapic bar, magnets, 5 G antenna etc...
The magnets are too weak to be useful.

Those are unfortunately tabloid claims, equivalent to saying a vaccine can be developed in 3 months.

It takes 12-18 months to field test a new modem and design an antenna for it. For example, X55 was launched in February 2019.

What phone are you coming from to the 12 Pro max? I'll be coming from a 6s+ to the 12 Pro, and am contemplating the same thing. Keep it for a year because I really do need a new phone, then trade in and upgrade to the 13 pro (12s+ probably) to get the features I wanted to get on this phone: better battery, 120hz, etc. Form factor will likely be the exact same, so I should be able to reuse cases, etc.

But then again, maybe I'll be way more happy with the 12 pro than I think I'm going to be, considering I'm upgrading from such an old phone.

Been waiting to see which modem they used. Was hoping for the X60. This years components and smaller battery is turning out to be a disappointment for me. I’ll wait for the 12 max, even though my 12 pro regular will be coming this Friday. I at least want the best battery life and cameras

Even happier that I skipped the pro max model this year, no x60 modem, smaller battery, no 120hz, no lpto display, same size notch, the 12 is the phone to get this year, hopefully next year apple adds the features that most people want.

Andddddd yet another reason to wait for next year's iPhone (which I already figured anyways).

The X60 (the newest Qualcomm chip following the X55) is a big update with lower battery consumption, Voice over 5G (VoNR), and carrier aggregation which will result in faster and more reliable 5G.
That only really applies if you need 5G mmwave service and live in a majorly congested area where it’s currently live. Otherwise, for the vast majority of people LTE is still plenty fast for what they need.

I plan on turning my 5G radio off when I get the 12 Pro Max in Nov and I have 5G sub-6GHz service where I live. Those bands aren’t much faster than LTE as it is so I don’t think most of us will be missing much.

On the contrary, the MagSafe connection is what’s going to replace Lightning. Soon. That’s pretty obvious. Connect the dots. In a year or two, the iPhone will have zero ports. It’ll probably have an iPad-style 3-dots “Smart Connector” for the rare times one needs to reload the firmware. More waterproof, less physical bits to get damaged, and good luck to the black hats and 3-letter agencies trying to own it through that port.

Bottom line is, are you going to get less battery life? (excluding 5G) The answer is NO! Calm down people.

Yeah, I agree. And it looks like the magnet isn't strong enough to hold that wallet accessory safely, as MKBHD has shown on his latest video.

Reddit has analyzed MKBHD's video and determined his was a unique case. Other videos show it is much stronger than his is.

Not in any way that would be apparent to anyone. The speed difference between the two is negligible, and the additional functionality is not supported by current 5G networks.
Your assumption is wrong the X 60 QUALCOMM has been said to be more battery efficient. Touché
