I know people will disagree but those magnet rings cause weight in these new phones. I personally feel MagSafe on the iPhones is a gimmick and not a must have feature. I’d prefer no magnets and allow more room for a larger battery. Every yr Apple adds a new feature that forces them to decrease the battery size. force Touch ID tapic bar, magnets, 5 G antenna etc...
S year iphone "now with larger battery and brushed steel band".

What phone are you coming from to the 12 Pro max? I'll be coming from a 6s+ to the 12 Pro, and am contemplating the same thing. Keep it for a year because I really do need a new phone, then trade in and upgrade to the 13 pro (12s+ probably) to get the features I wanted to get on this phone: better battery, 120hz, etc. Form factor will likely be the exact same, so I should be able to reuse cases, etc.

But then again, maybe I'll be way more happy with the 12 pro than I think I'm going to be, considering I'm upgrading from such an old phone.
I upgrade yearly because I’m somewhat of a tech enthusiast. I currently have an 11 promax. So by no means is this a necessity. I soften the blow by selling my phones private party. I do not do trade-ins with carriers or Apple. And why would I think of getting the 12 pro max this year? Flat edge design, a gold color that I think I would actually like, Qualcomm modems, camera upgrades, A14, ceramic shield vs gorilla glass, 6gb of ram, thinner design.

Is this the first time that the battery resides on the right side of an iPhone?

Appears to be the case.

It seems like the 12 has a lot of wasted space covered by a plastic cover, for where the 12 pro has it's thrid camera and the lidar sensor.
I'm pretty sure the design of both phones is the same so... another way of cost-cutting.

Andddddd yet another reason to wait for next year's iPhone (which I already figured anyways).
Actually, the phone AFTER next year’s is going to be even better.
that will be the ultimate success especially as it's backwards compatible with standard Qi phones (unlike lightning which was on apple phones only).
I read that the work that Apple’s doing will be provided back to the Qi group to continue improving the standard. So, there shouldn’t be any lack of magnet capable chargers in the future. Once you have the magnetic connection, maybe that helps to provide an interface for microphones and the like. As long as they have GarageBand on phones, there will be folks wanting to hook up musical devices to them in a low latency way.

They COULD just discontinue GarageBand on the iPhone, though....

Too bad. X60 is superior. ☹
X80, though. That’s the cat’s meow.

Qualcomm is such a huge and welcomed change. I am surprised none of the early reviewers talked about it.

It's been talked about by a few reviewers.

Will probably end up sold as "refurbished" or "opened box". Lot's of shady iPhone sellers around.

Chinese teardowns are more technical and focus on understanding the inner workings and repair processes. It's much more valuable to understand how to repair the logic board components or be able to manufacture third-party parts, than to sell the torn down iPhone 12 as an open box.

Without the notch and a tri-camera setup there is so much more room for a battery, now remove the gimmick magnets that transfers electricity via air which I plan not to use and actually less cable than a wired transfer...and so much more battery!

People who want the best camera should buy the iPhone Pro Mac+ Super model with 9 inch screen, or just buy a regular professional camera. Most people were happy with iphone 6 or 7 camera.

I agree. Also, the taptic engine and speakers are smaller. All of this despite the larger footprint compared to the 2019 series.

On the contrary, the MagSafe connection is what’s going to replace Lightning. Soon. That’s pretty obvious. Connect the dots. In a year or two, the iPhone will have zero ports. It’ll probably have an iPad-style 3-dots “Smart Connector” for the rare times one needs to reload the firmware. More waterproof, less physical bits to get damaged, and good luck to the black hats and 3-letter agencies trying to own it through that port.
May be the case however this whole launch of MagSafe for iPhone is quite funny. Apple says there not going to include a charger in the box for environmental reasons. Then at the same time saying here buy this new charger called MagSafe for $50.00 Come on it’s so obvious what’s going on here and the consumer is not stupid don’t cover it up with environmental reasons when the real reason is to get you on the MagSafe bandwagon.

I’ve seen videos and it doesn’t even work that great magnets too weak. I can see it now next yr, “we’ve increased the strength of the magnets” no extra charge same price yet stronger. Yeah thicker magnets mean more weight = less battery next yr.

Wow that’s so jammed packed! I guess they have to remove the charging port next year.

What other surveys have you done? 🙄
I would be willing to bet that, at one point, MOST people were happy with going outside, to a different building to use the bathroom, too :)

Yeah, and Apple was SOOO crafty, they eliminated all other options from the Apple Store AND from anywhere else. Yup, MagSafe is the ONLY game in town now... boy Apple realllllly stuck it to their customers. 🙄 I kinda wish there was a $19 option, maybe one that works with the free cable I have in the box. Better yet, I wish the charger I already had worked with the new phone. Nope, darn that Apple.

Do the magnets have a negative effect on the compass ? Anyone knows ?

It’s not the features that decreased battery size. They shaved 1mm off the thickness of the phone, which is a bigger contributor.

The only good use for "wireless" charging is in the car. Being able to charge your phone and use CarPlay without having to worry about the cable is really nice. On that matter, I have a question that may be a dumb one: will the magnets help the phone align with the charging coils in the car or does that magic only happen with MagSafe-certified accessories?

If the car does not have magnets, MagSafe is useless. But don't worry, the phone will still charge if placed correctly. Over the past two years of owning my XS I have acquired so many cheap Qi chargers, I honestly can't count them all quickly. I have them at home, of course, at work, at one in-laws, at the other in-laws and one in the car (my car is older, does not have a built-in charging pad). All of those pads have a green light that come on to let you know you've placed the phone correctly. In two years of use, I've only misplaced the phone twice that I can think of. Both times when going to bed, so I woke up with a low-ish battery phone. Which charged while I got ready for work, which charged while I commuted to work (in the car) and charged when I got to work. So instead of waking up with 100%, I woke up with like 30% but it still wasn't a big deal.

I hope MagSafe goes somewhere amazing, but for now I'm sticking with my XS and even if I do upgrade I don't see myself replacing all of these cheap pads with MagSafe chargers. YMMV

If it's anything like the magnetic dashboard mount & case I used to use, it is just a gimmick. If the magnets aren't strong enough, it'll go flying any time you have a sharp turn or sudden stop. Not to mention, the havoc it'll wreak on anything that still requires a magnet stripe.
