Why don't you read what you're replying to. The OP NEVER said anything about forcing people to do something for their own good. That's libel.

Really, the quote is right at the top of the previous page (the one your reply is actually on). I was replying to the OP saying

So Apple should force people for their own good, they don't know what's better for them and stick with bad habits from the past.

nobody's impressed with your googled copy+paste quotes that mean jack.

Now who's jumping to conclusions?

I don't even know how you'd end up googling that quote from the context of the conversation.

On the other hand, given my visceral response to the OP's offensive comment, is it really that hard to believe the quote is one of my favourite expressions and absolutely words to live by?

And that means jack? It sums up my entire long post in a handful of words better than I could ever say.

Funny how I don't see the word "force" in that quote anywhere, nor any words to that effect.

And I don't know how you concluded that lagwagon was even remotely advocating that people should be forced into doing something they don't want to do.

You won't be forced to do anything, but rather have the choice to upgrade to a higher quality audio solution than you currently have. You can certainly chose to go with the same quality, or less than Apple is currently using, but it will be an improvement in some cases as its paired to the audio device you're using it with. You may have to pay for an external DAC, but Apple will be giving you better and more features without charging you any more than the previous phone.

Apple will almost assuredly not ship an adapter in the box, as its not in their best interest, or that of promoting the future of consumer audio -- wireless. Cheap 3.5mm technology is holding back demand for wireless audio. With greater demand comes innovation, quality improvements and price drops, all of which benefits the consumer. And it would also deter customers from trying Lightning. Apple will ship a free pair of Lightning EarPods, as they always have, which will be natively compatible with all future Apple products. Apple, might included a lightning to 3.5mm adapter to use the Lightning earbuds with older 3.5mm equipped Apple products but I doubt it.

There will still be a cheaper internal DAC because it doesn't have to provide the same quality for tiny internal speakers and mics, but it is unlikely Apple will pass through an analogue signal through Lightning (even though it's capable of it). But it's almost a guarantee you'll have to buy an inexpensive adapter that converts a regular 3.5mm set of headphones to Lightning, as well as one that converts Lightning headphones to 3.5mm jack.

Apple might surprise us, and we'll find some kind of innovative new set of free earbuds with both a Lightning and flip-out 3.5mm Jack. Well one can hope. But definitely no all-purpose adapter for older audio equipment.

Assuming the new earpods come with a lightning connector, It's true that I won't be forced to do anything. However, I am and sympathize with those who use a second set of higher end headphones. There is either the replacement cost of headphones with a lightning connector, or the purchase of a new DAC/adaptor. Therefore, Apple would be forcing anyone using 3rd party headphones to buy an adaptor or new headphones. I'm fine with that as a light audiophile since I'd opt for a quality DAC, but there are a lot of people with the existing tech and I can understand most folks not wanting to buy a DAC or make a new headphone purchase.
