AT&T might be faster, but it's not faster if you can't even connect!

So how many people will ask for a handout from Apple when they release a 4g LTE iPhone 4g this summer and want to get compensation for buying the older model only 4-5 months before the new one comes out?

How likely is it that the next iPhone will feature 4g LTE? And how likely is it that Verizon would get it right away?

If it doesn't feature 4g technology then I am less likely to switch to Verizon as the speed and simultaneous voice is somewhat important to me. Unless the upgrade is significant in other ways then I might not upgrade my iPhone for the first year ever. This will save money on the termination fee the following year as well. Although when I go home to KC the service on AT&T is terrible with many dropped calls and data dead zones, especially on the Kansas side.

If I had to guess, I would say VZW gets a new LTE phone next February and this summer ATT gets a new iPhone 4S...

Do you even own an iPhone?

The problem for AT&T is that they are in a no-win situation. You will hear a ton of stories about how much better the Verizon iPhone is, in those areas where Verizon might have a better signal than AT&T. Simply because those people will have motivation to switch, the complainers will have the loudest voice. You won't hear any stories about the areas where AT&T performs better than Verizon because those folks will stay with AT&T, no need to switch carriers. It's a twisted perception.

I've had no more than 5 dropped calls in the last year at least, on my iPhone 4.

As being in a spot with no ATT problems, I'm betting the Verizon store will be pretty empty on the 10th. Should be fun to see though.

May go just to watch.

for fun I would like to see a video of a verizon and att iphone load the same page at the same time and see who wins the race...

Solid reviews, as expected with the very strong Verizon voice network. As for me, I need my simultaneous voice/data. AT&T is strong where I live in Houston and the death grip was never an issue.

However the 3G speeds are too slow, I have conferenced more than 2 people on a call before, and I am overall very happy with AT&T.

For those who say that the Verizon network may cave with the hungry iPhone data users, I call hogwash. Lack of voice and data at the same time will put a curb to some of that. Can't update Facebook or twitter or use GPS while talking on the phone. That's a lot of traffic for GSM to carry at once.

We'll see what happens. I am skipping the refresh this summer and seeing what will be available summer 2012, you know, before the world ends. At least I will be contract free!

that was already done and a video was posted. the vz iphone loaded faster than att but it was by the skin of there teeth

all i know is that the iphone will be hell of a lot faster for data then my stupid blackberry tour is right now and being able to open more then one internet tab/window

Those of you who are talking about AT&T network doesn't give you signal in your area...
Why is it even matter? If the carrier doesn't offer you signal there, then you should never even consider it in the first place.

In my area, Verizon is slightly better than AT&T with Voice. So, I will take AT&T over Verizon for faster Data.

AT&T doesn't have 0 signals every where. The coverage depends on where you live. No need to bash AT&T for you having a poor signals. If you have a bad signal then you should have never signed up for aT&T in the first place. It's your fault.

If you are complaining about your contract, then please save me from your sadness. You can sell your AT&T iphone on ebay for 400-500 dollars and you will be able to cover the both ETF and buy Verizon iphone 4.

ETF is just another stupid excuse that people make.

Wait, AT&T is faster after all?

Verizon FAIL.

Can make a phone call with out a "Call Failed"

AT&T Fail

- I'll take a connection that works decent on both sides before I take a high positive and a low negative. For Denver the low negative is a VERY low negative.

Theres a spot with ATT 3G. No Way.

Just because it says 3G doesnt mean it will work ;)

+1

Whahaha...All you Verizon fanboys fail epicly..

1. You are talking to someone on Skype, MSN any other social program and then your iphone rings and you LOSE your call on your laptop... "Verizon dropped call" anyone??
2. 50% SLOWER than AT&T - another epic fail.. I could understand if it would be 5-10% slower but FIFTY? No thanks..

Overall total waste. I am fine with SINGLE bar on ATT in my apartment and can still hear everyone perfectly (and they can hear me as well). The only way I lose signal is if i do death grip while talking.. Otherwise in school and in town I have amazing 5 bar reception

That's why I have a google voice and call foreward on my iPhone. Not that I ever use skype.

It depends on the area boss. In Denver, downtown keep in mind, while on the phone with an AT&T CS, I once dropped 4 phone calls within a period of 10 minutes. The CS had to call me back eveytime, and on the 4th call back, she called me back with "I see you're having connection problems". Can you guess my response? I wish ATT had a solid connection as I wouldnt have to pay full MSRP on verizon. i've been iphone less since October and going nuts for another 7 or < days.

I'll keep my reliability and fast speed (AT&T) over reliability and slow speed any day (Verizon);)

Seems unnecessarily spiteful. Gotta love the logic of fanboyism.

CDMA = better for voice
GSM = better for data

CDMA is a much narrower radio band and hence the range is longer and Verizon has better coverage and less dropped calls because of it.

GSM is a wide band capable of more bandwidth at the cost of less coverage.

It's not surprising that Verizon's network is much slower in the data area. It also extremely sucks that you can't use Data + Voice on CDMA.

The mistake AT&T made was unlimited data plans sadly cellular technology is not like wired technology and there is very limited space on those radio waves.. Verizon will eventually suffer the same problems if they don't adjust their bandwidth plans after this initial offering.

I sincerely hope your not an RF engineer... because those comments are really scary if you are. For the record, both ATT and Verizon are CDMA for 3G, UMTS is wideband CDMA and Verizon uses the narrowband version, these just dictate the individual channel width, both use a variant of CDMA technology to transmit voice and data, unlike GSM which was different.

both use 800 Mhz spectrum to carry their traffic. Verizon's network which is 1xEVDO Rev A supports a maximum of 3.1 mbps downlink and 1.5 on the uplink. HSPA supports over 21 down and 5.76 up , which is shared among all users. Note the ATT iPhone only supports 7.2 down and 5.76 up but still offers better data speeds where they have 3G coverage including the simultaneous data and voice which Verizon customers can only dream of unless their iPhone 4 has a Wi-Fi connection, then they get both.

Cheers

It's my fault for a company failing to deliver promised service?

Glad there's choices now in the US... but I'll stick with AT&T. I love the surf while talking and I don't have hardly any dropped call issues. Maybe one every 2 months?

But again... good to see choices. Hopefully more US companies will follow. The T-Mobile ads are getting annoying. :p

Exactly.

so what does the Verizon iPhone have that the AT&T one doesn't?

Data (say google maps / email / browser) dropping out on Verizon when you get a call.

i will be buying this in about 5 hours...

though part of me kind of hopes verizon's network will die,

it will just show how powerful the iphone effect is

I don't have any issues with AT&T. I don't get what all the fuss is? They act like they've dropped so many calls in the past day or two, I don't know if I have since I got my iPhone 4...

It's my fault for a company failing to deliver promised service?

First, you have 30 days to try out the service to see whether you like it or not. Second, cell phone companies never guarantee services as it is virtually impossible to provide flawless service everywhere under any condition. Third, you are always free to take your money to another company that provides the service you. Choose the network first then the phone.

The speeds and signals depend on where you live. Not the phone or the carrier.

AT&T is better than Verizon where I live. I can't say anything for anybody else.

So I technically can't bash either of these carriers because it wouldn't be right.

I'm not an AT&T fanboy either. I enjoy the service I get right now.

How about a review comparing the Verizon iPhone with an AT&T iPhone 4 where AT&T is only EDGE, you know, like the rest of the nation live, ie THERE REAL PEOPLE.

Who has the best data depends on so many factors. Ask anyone in NYC and they will go for Verizon for data speed. I had an iPhone 3G and switched to Verizon and got the Incredible. I did side by side speed tests with iPhone users around me (since we mostly work together). In my area (central MD) the Incredible was generally a bit ahead in speed, but far better in latency. I noticed this effect with my own iPhone. So, when we did side by side browser tests I always won. Hopefully more people can use Apple's hardware as intended now (sans that whole can't talk and surf the web part...that's a bit of a bummer I suppose if you care about that).
