If I had to guess, I would say VZW gets a new LTE phone next February and this summer ATT gets a new iPhone 4S...

No way does Apple limit new phones to one carrier or the other. Apple is releasing this mid product cycle simply cause they needed to release it now.

Customers who happen to wait till summer will be able to buy the new phone and when it comes out. Makes no sense to do it the other way.

Wait, AT&T is faster after all?

Verizon FAIL.

Uh, mmmkay, why don't you try coming within a nine mile radius of my home and having 3g? Better yet, reliable EDGE? We're not talking about an iPad here. Rather an iPHONE. A PHONE is generally a device where you actually TALK to someone. FOR a HUGE population of the US, Vz CDMA is the best that is CURRENTLY available.

WGAS, WGAF if AT&T is faster if there is no coverage? Consultant my @$$.

Some of these comments are just obnoxious. Verizon offers a new choice. That choice comes with trade-offs.

As we all knew going into this, if you prioritize data over calling, you should pick AT&T. If you prioritize voice over data, you should pick Verizon. If you prioritize US service over International service, you should pick Verizon. Vice-versa, AT&T.

Important point left out of the MacRumors summary though. According to Engadget, although Verizon's data speeds are slower, they don't hang as much. I find my 3G connection with AT&T hangs frequently; I think this might be a worthwhile tradeoff (consistent downloads over fast downloads), but of course ymmv.

wow... you guys are a lot better behaved then the commenters on engadget and techcrunch...

...the android fanboys and apple fanboys are gouging each others eyes out...

I've been wanting to get an iPhone for years now but i just don't see the point in this release. It is almost a fact that Apple will release "iPhone5" this summer. I'll be holding off on this release, at least until summer time if i am incorrect.

Better than sending incoming calls straight to voicemail.

I have a few apps (Twitter for iPhone comes to mind) that basically panic when they can't get a data signal in places like elevators, etc. Those may have to be updated to recover from network events like that in a more graceful way.

I wonder what the Verizon iPhone shows when it is on 2g? ATT shows and 'E' because it's EDGE network. What about Verizon?

That's what happens. And, as it turns out, the Android fanboys are often worse than us.

Geez. No, the iPhone is only one little app out of a hundred I have. Even before the app store came out, it was only 10% of what the device was. It's much much more a pda than it is a phone. Seriously. Add a phone app to an iPod Touch or an iPad and immediately it would be a PHONE? I'll give you it's a phone mostly in that it uses cellular connectivity for it's data network. It's MOST IMPORTANT feature. But the iPad does the same thing without the phone app. And like you said, it's not a phone.

I’d sure love to stick it to AT&T (for reasons of customer service, not signal service!) but I couldn’t stand the lack of voice and Internet. Then again, I probaby game online more times a day than I make phone calls

But we’ll see how mad I am at AT&T by the time my contract is up! And Verizon will get (widespread) simultaneous voice and data someday. I won’t be getting another phone until iPhone 4 or 6 anyway.

As for speed, I really don’t care that much which is faster overall; I care which is faster in MY neighborhood, but really, reliable coverage is worth more than data rate. If I lived in NYC and couldn’t even get a signal, who cares about speed? Even a slow connection is useful if it works! I like AT&T speeds, but that alone won’t keep me from switching. Speed doesn’t directly determine most of WHAT I can do. (Simultaneous data does.)

Wow. Good to know. U = everyone in the US.

your first line made me think: this person is making a very good point, he has my respect,

then your ending comment made me think: wow too far, this person sounds immature, and has lost my respect

LOL... AT&T fanboys calling out the verizon fanboys.
Defending AT&T like you owned the company.
Your just a number to them as they bend you over and give it to you like they do everyone else.

Face the facts... Apple moved on, AT&T is no longer the only US provider.
Apple wants to make money, and they needed to move on beyond AT&T.

9 out of 10 people getting the verizon iPhone knows about the verizon network.
A bit slower, no voice/data, blah, blah. And yet, the iPhone will sell.

War is over folks, time to leave the basement.

lol, I love the hate.... but not really.

but I don't care because there is nothing the tech community can do that will affect me know, because I am just overwhelmed with excitement with 4 hours to go.

Have had very few issues with AT&T's network dropping my calls, particularly since I don't use the phone portion of my iPhone all that much. The faster data is much more important to me, and I've found AT&T's coverage to be more than adequate. Additionally, the costs of switching just don't make sense. Sticking with AT&T even after my contract is up.
