Now to get rid of these stupid stickers on the left side of the palmrest...

Ohh I like that era thinkpad. Yeah I never understood Why manufacturers thought they needed to stick those stupid badges on everything. Towers, laptops - just about every machine that made it to a retail center was bathed in those things. Who knows, maybe the salespeople got bored. :D

spotted this on ebay figured id bring it to the forums attention

looks like a Sawtooth with a decent 1.2Ghz G4 CPU upgraded fitted potentially a good bargain for someone

if it was a DA/QS id be all over it since I really want one of those for the collection but its a sawtooth and I already have one of those

(note i have no affiliation with the seller just something I spotted on ebay while searching for a DA/QS :) )

Darn... No shipping to the US. I really want a Sawtooth and this seems like it would be an opportune one to get. ;)

I feel like I should know this, but are CPU cards interchangeable between the Sawtooth and DA/QS models?

Boxed DLSD. Might try my luck. However, the serial on the penultimate pic (W8553...) says week 53, 2005. Huh?
Good luck - I'll keep my thumbs pressed for you!
It has even 2GB working RAM and no dead RAM slot.

The 15" DLSD I use regularly came somehow beaten up and I fixed the hard drive with a few spare metal frames and wooden spatulas because parts of the metal-frame were damaged. Since the I wanted to use it as long as possible to keep the "reserve" spared.
Well, 'till now it proved to be "unkaputtbar" and I enjoy to intentionally not touching it with silk-gloves, instead allow it to be bumped a bit more ... (which is no problem, since it has an mSATA-IDE-Converter upgrade /w dual boot Tiger and Leopard.)
It's somehow nice to have things originally boxed, but finally these boxes become a real burden and block valuable space on the attic.

Thanks! I'm afraid the price will skyrocket at some point due to having the original box.

Does anyone have an idea what the serial number is all about?

Be careful. That IS a real bad offer!
All support for that machine has expired and it is only electronic-waste!!
And currently Apple even does not offer free shipping/service for recycling any more ...

So here's my latest acquisition.

It's a Dell Vostro V13 "ultrabook" from 2010 with a 1.4 GHz Core 2 Solo (the main reason I bought it - those are hard to come by), 4 GB RAM, a 250 GB Samsung 850 Evo [that alone is worth the 30 bucks I paid for this thing!] and a 13.3" 1366×768 (ugh!) screen. The aluminum case makes it look a lot more expensive than it actually was when new, and I love the fact that all the ports are on the back and the display hinges don't wrap around the case which is a pretty unique feature. Unfortunately I could not remove those stupid CPU/OS stickers in the lower right corner of the palmrest without leaving some sticky residue and covered it with clear adhesive tape for now - it looks a lot worse on the picture than in reality though.

UPDATE: Gave it another thorough try and managed to remove all the residue - woohoo! :)

How does a Core 2 Solo compare to a Core Solo or Core 2 Duo?

This reminds me, a long time ago I read a review of the first Intel Mac mini. They benchmarked the core solo Intel 1.5GHz mini with the previous PPC G4 1.5GHz mini and it was either barely faster or even slower running different native programs. For PPC programs the core solo was destroyed by the older G4 model.

The big advantage to the Intel chips was cores, I believe that’s a major part of the performance increase going from the 05 Macs to the 06 ones.

Not sure about this as a general rule. Geekbench has single core and multicore scores and Intel processors smoked the G5 on both. A lot of applications back then never made use of more than one core - particularly games.

As for C2S vs. CS - similar as with C2D vs. CD, I'd expect up to 15%~20% better performance at the same clock speed. As for C2S vs. C2D at the same clock speed, having a second core helps a lot when it comes to general responsiveness while something is running and provides a big boost for multi-threaded workloads. Nothing new here.

With that being said, the Core Solo is essentially a slightly upgraded Pentium M (65nm/SSE3/higherFSB), and a 1.5 GHz Pentium M destroys a 1.5 GHz G4. There's really no comparison. Those programs where the Core Solo mini was slower or barely faster were probably tasks like iTunes MP3 encoding where the hard drive and optical drive are the limiting factors or games - the GMA950 sucks even compared to the G4's paltry 9200.

And it's not surprising at all that PPC applications were slower - Rosetta takes its toll. You need to use native applications.

To the OP's point, I was last properly playing around with buying PPCs around five years ago, and was scoping up Powermacs for even £5-10 on a lucky day. These machines are now 5 years older but a fair bit more expensive!

May I post a one-off update about the eMac?

I bought these parts:
  • 2x Qimonda HYS64D128320HU-6-C to max out the RAM at 2GB
  • 1x Saft LS14250 LS 14250 for the PRAM battery replacement
  • 1x StarTech 40 pin IDE PATA to SATA Adapter
  • 1x SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB Sata III
  • 1x Generic China 2.5" to 3.5" HDD frame
  • 1x Arctic P8 TC self-regulating fan
  • 1x IT Dusters CompuCleaner Xpert
Snip!

Hello there!

I scored the same identical eMac for 30 euros...
Believe it or not I was buying it only for the speakers (the pro clear small ball things) and the keyboard / mouse I wanted to steal for an iMac I bought for my daughter and...
I turned on the thing just to give a look around and I was blown away by how beautiful and how beefy it is!
It became the main pc in my electronic lab now :D

Surfing internet / streaming music / arduino...
Amazing machine!
I also bet that MintPPC will run pretty well on this computer.

I have the same list of repair / mods you have in mind plus my DVD reader is bonkers :/

A few questions for you and all eMac aficionados out there:
- Is the fan you mention a perfect replacement for eMac fan?
- Does anyone know which cd / dvd / burner I can buy for eMac 1.25?
- How can I clean an eMac well without runing it? (dirt and dust aside it is also a bit yellowish on the top)

Not a PowerPC, but I just got myself a Mac Pro 2008, with 2x3.2 Xeons, 16GB FB-DIMM RAM, Radeon 5770 plus a 20' aluminium Apple Cinema Display, for £50!
Computer getting stuck at loading screen and seller had no idea what to do with it (or what he was even selling really). Turns out it was just the HDD that was likely failing.

Wow, that's a steal for this machine :) Congrats!!! And that 5770 has a MiniDisplayPort too. What are your plans for it?
