What a pain in the rear bro.
Having to go through all that to finally get what is yours is pretty sad. I'm glad it worked out for you in the end but makes me think twice about selling on ebay again.

The eBay rep said she hoped I continued to sell on eBay, but their lack of attention in the first place made it come to this. Could have been resolved so much quicker and without all this stress. Either way I'll give credit where credits due:

Thank you MacRumors! You forum poster (especially Applejuiced) got me through this ordeal

Thank you eBay for actually making the right decision in the end.

And finally thank you person that tried to defraud me, you made me more wearisome of EVERYONE. I'll certainly do more research if I ever sell something on eBay again.

Congrats (?) on getting your money back, people are so slimy on eBay and eBay usually goes with the buyer. Once the bank transfer clears, definitely pull out your bank account. I'm sure that PayPal would contact their credit card company and inform them about the fraudulent chargeback if they've already done this much for you, but just to be safe.

Something interesting to note the very very VERY helpful woman said she hardly ever sees these types of cases. I wonder how truthful that is? Maybe she personally hasn't but damn - I've read so many horror stories about this exact same situation; how could they not have many of these cases?

That's a good point.
Maybe she personally hasn't came across any or maybe its a very small percentage that end up to this.
We gotta remember there's millions of auctions going on ebay, its probably the few horror stories like this that come out and get lots of attention. Every single transaction that goes as planned with no problems don't get much attention.

Going by some of the horror stories I have read in the past, the only way to 100% protect yourself against a chargeback is to close that bank account and to open a new one. Even after taking the account off, they still have the information. Sometimes they will still make a charge anyway.

That being said, I can't recall ever hearing of them getting the FBI involved in a claim before. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but they might be waking up to the level of scams being carried out on their site. A "few" claims they could quite possibly brush off. But not the level that seem to be popping up now.

It's bad for business. Who wants to list their high value item on a site where it is so easy for someone to file a false claim and get it for "free"?

I'm very happy for you OP. My heart sank when I saw you pull those papers out of the envelope. Glad you got a positive outcome out of a situation that looked like it wouldn't end well.

If you don't mind, could you post the ebay listing? Or did ebay remove it?

I'm looking forward to this actually. I've had contact with an FBI agent when I was doing my undergrad but never more than some input about cases.

Thanks. I have 100% feedback on about 300 transactions (mostly selling) and I sell all my old apple products to fund my new ones. Needless to say, your story scared the heck out of me and I'm not sure if i'll sell on ebay anymore.

One thing that would have been a red flag to me though is his 3 rating. I don't ship my stuff to anybody with feedback that low. Yes, it limits the number of people who can buy the item, but at least it lowers the potential of getting scammed.

Yea I'm usually pretty good about that. I think the confirmed shipping information and prompt payment diluted my view. I just couldn't believe how fast someone used the buy it now!

Well I already sent my money to my bank account but until that clears I can't remove my bank account. But I'm sure as hell removing that ASAP. I seriously can't get over how helpful they were once I told them what I got in the envelope. I'll also be calling UPS corporate tomorrow to report fraudulent activity at one of their locations. It seems this person has multiple places though because the return address was different from the mailing address I sent the iPhone to.

Congratulations on getting your money finally. I will never buy off ebay again

I'm glad this worked out in your favor!

What I don't understand is why did eBay refund the buyer? Doesn't that just encourage him to steal from other sellers?

Well what I want to know is what kind of feedback did the scum bag give you.:D

None, I asked them to remove my positive feedback for them but they couldn't?

I was explained it was procedural. It sounds like they don't bother reading the case details until you call up and explain you've been completely ripped off.
