I wasn't aware of that feature. It appears to be designed for resellers who would place their orders directly with a manufacturer or distributor. In this case it was just someone concerned about ebay cutting into their scalping margins. If you listed a pre-sale item, the bid would include anything aside from tax and shipping just like any other store. This is part of what makes it functional to browse listings. I'm not a big fan of ebay overall. They're quite hostile to sellers in mostly siding with buyers on disputes as they wish to attract more buyers. An auction system really requires a high level of legitimacy to stay really profitable. If buyers are constantly going through junk listings, they may become discouraged with that method of purchase or miss valuable listings, which really hurts all parties involved.

That site has gone downhill for many years.

No, it simply allows anyone to place pre-orders. That's why it is titled as such. If that is not the case point me to a "rule" stating you cannot.

I sold well over 1000 items last year and grossed into the mid 100K figures and while eBay is expensive (but not as expensive as paying utilities, rent & insurance for a B&M business) especially for those selling "1 offs" there is a lot of money to be made there if done properly. I have been selling since 1998 and only one time had an issue as a seller and it got resolved in my favor. I agree it's not easy for the individual 1 at a time seller but where else can you sell a $100 Walmart or Amazon gift card $110 - $120?

You probably don't remember the days selling stuff in newspaper classifieds. You think eBay is expensive, try that. And of course, if they were truly "going downhill" they wouldn't be making the money they do.

I've got one on eBay for a $200+ profit and have a lot of interest.

Congrats are you buy it now or auction?

Right now I am checking eBay. The wifi 16gb model the highest one sold for is $654 with free shipping. After fees shipping thats a $50 to $60 profit.

I have three to sell but am holding off until mid week to see prices. At that point I will decide to take a risk. If these thing skyrocket it will be after launch and there is stock limitations. But if Apple has a virtual limitless supply you could be out any profit and have to return the iPad.

Also people can return the iPad to you or rip you off. I am also going to try Amazon.

I love the eBay listings where the item is .99 cents and the shipping is $500.00 (as if eBay won't find out during the final selling price.)
It really doesn't matter anymore. eBay, since last summer, charges the same fees on shipping costs so those people will be in for a surprise and is probably why eBay no longer cares if they post sales that way.

Also, by doing that, the "seller protection" is only for the 99cents if there is a problem.

I remember them vaguely. I can remember ebay at its inception:D. That was quite some time ago. I'm not entirely sure why someone would pay that much for a gift card. You probably have a better idea, as your ebay experience is obviously much greater than my own (no sarcasm intended).

I bought 4 -- one to keep and three for resale. When I saw they weren't selling out online, I canceled two of them. Have one for resale. 32 gb. Would rather unload it ASAP so I'm pricing it below what most buy it nows are. Prices might go up next week, but id be ok with a $200 profit. If it sells, great, if not, I return.

All of the pre-order stocks have been depleted in all countries that are part of the initial launch.

The 16GB wifi models are selling for an average of $700-750 on craigslist and for as much as $1000 on ebay. I don't think you'll have many problems unloading yours.

The gift card thing has always confused me. Check completed sales for gift cards. Mainly Amazon, Walmart, actually ALL the big names. Rarely does one sell for less than face value and most of the time they sell for more. Absolutely no idea why.

It's easy. Buyers are willing to a pay a premium for convenience. A couple of dollars extra may be less than the cost of going to the actual B&M store (fuel, transit fare, time, etc.). Not to mention actually having to physically get up and go outside.

Sure, some retailers sell their gift cards online. But I know a couple that actually charge shipping for just the gift card. Again, paying a premium on eBay could still be cheaper. And then there is the wait time. People who are pressed for time or impulsive and impatient want it faster and are willing to pay. If the gift card is in the form of an e-code, a seller can give the code to the buyer immediately after payment. I'm not aware of any store or gift card website that advertises e-codes in less than twenty-four hours.

Plus, when you purchase something on eBay you're getting the experience, not just the product. This means that (hopefully) you get feedback. This could be important if you are a new seller trying to build a reputation. You're also getting eBay Bucks. The percentage back might be more than a rewards card, and it's could for everything on eBay (which is basically everything in general), unlike some cards that are good for specific categories. On a small scale, these two things may not measure up to much. But when you make all your online purchases solely from eBay with hundreds of transactions, it all adds up. Amazon is, and has always been short in this regard. Also, buyers may have to pay sales tax on Amazon.

And then there's also the psychology of bidding warfare and winning.

You can walk into any store and buy one off the stack. The girl who set up my lte @ Verizon store thought it was funny that I preordered.

If they set up your LTE in the store, since there is nothing to set up except drop in the sim, they put you on a monthly autopay plan so they can get a commission. Unless you want data every month and not just when you need it you're now going to have to fight with them to replace the SIM and cancel the plan. This has been going on at lots of VZW stores (and Best Buy). They say "let me set it up for you" but what they really mean is "let me put you on a monthly plan." It's not a contract, just an automatic monthly renewal.

Yeah I'm such a fool for getting a data plan for iPad. Maybe you should try getting a job and you could get an iPad with lte as well.

The reason why people can walk in this weekend and just get a new iPad is the massive pre-order. Otherwise, the sell out would be like the iPad 2. As of now, the Hillsdale store is down to 16GB models only. My guess is Sunday by COB most all stores will be sold out. Then the eBay scalpers will have a market albeit small.
