Let's cut to the chase here. it's a toy on your wrist that can't tell any sentient human being what they don't already know.
Ah, the good old UK.
I'm surprised they didn't make Apple put a warning label on the box that says that you might choke if you swallow your Watch.
What's the trouble with Apple Pay in the UK? Works fine for me.That's not surprising in UK... Apple Pay is having trouble elsewhere as well. The two go together like lime & a coconut.
Firstly i am not British, i live in Hong Kong.
I feel a bit of a bad taste from Apple that this feature is not release outside of the USA because of the following.
Apple is a global company, for a dollar and a dime producing their products in asia.
Apple is using low tax countries outside of the USA to warrant and maximize their profits.
But in the end in this case as a sample when it comes down to a massively advertised feature of a new product aka EKG they are going to play the victim and play the blame game that other countries/ nations do not approve the use of EKG yet..
They should have give the rest of the world a none EKG AW4 Option or at least give a rebate.
(If they do this, this entire thread is un-nesessery, but as it stance the entire world is paying for a feature only people in America may use as it stance till it has been approved. And for the rest of the world there is no ETA for that as it is per country, it make take a month/year/ never happen.
Perhaps Apple should have just not shouted this feature of the roof but just enabled it per country when it was approved instead. and then updated said country. But as it stance now i feel like they only submitted the requests to other countries very recently perhaps very close to the release of the AW4.
Now do not get me wrong, i know EKG is more like a nice to have feature and not as accurate as doing at a doctor, but since this device is becoming more and more of a health monitor device, what`s next? when the AW5 comes out will more and more features be locked down to the USA only?
A apple product refreshes each year, so if each year new medical features comes out all other countries will be waiting for 1/2/3 years before those medical features are being approved. That is the issue of those countries being slow yes, i totally agree. But why not have this globally arranged prior releasing a global product from a global company.
If they always keep favoring America, surely at some point the rest of the world will move to local/ other companies. This is not a flame intended thread and yes my english is not great, i am sorry if some of my words did not translate very well or too harsh sounding. Accept my appologies in advance.
My bottomline: From my point of view, Apple has no quarrels using other countries to realize their products and maximize their profits and sell their products to their countries but at the same time prioritize America, when it comes down to medical related items.
I am worried for the future of the AW outside of America, as more and more features may be placed on hold or never be realized due other countries regulations. will the AW be a good product over the next few years for other countries?
The Apple Watch is a healthy lifestyle related device and will be further developed into that direction. How do you think Apple should have handled it? are you happy how they are handling it now? i think this only will really affect none american citizen so we will get a two fold awnsers here.
It is not the EKG function by itself that concerns me but the further development and direction we going in with future AW watches and new health related features we will get.
[doublepost=1538124666][/doublepost]*side note, did apple release any statement for which countries they are currently working out the paper work etc to get EKG approved? i feel communication is kept vague about this by Apple. Unless i missed something like a list of all countries currently pending approval.
What's the trouble with Apple Pay in the UK? Works fine for me.
It takes ages to get anything done in my damn country.
Funnily enough, if you owe the inland revenue money they seem to be able to chase that up & investigate with an army of people.
We've had Apple Pay in the UK for years. The state of Apple pay in other countries has absolutely no bearing on the ECG in the new Apple Watch gaining approval from the UK health authorities. Not surprising EGG having issues in UK. no When Apple pay is also not everywhere else either. And it's been out longer.
Apple Pay not being everywhere is due to retailers not updating their terminals to accept contactless payments. Anywhere contactless is available Apple Pay is Available. Not surprising EGG having issues in UK. no When Apple pay is also not everywhere else either. And it's been out longer.

This is gonna be a **** show.
Please all do understand i am not bitter about not getting EKG from the get go, (if it ever gets approved in HK)
But the fact that we will see this most likely with more health related monitoring features going forward with new AW releases. the fact we paying for something that may never be approved outside of the USA, features that might have been designed from the get go by apple with in the back of the mind it WILL be approved in the USA but no guarantee it will actually be for other countries as well.
My worries what apple might do:
Basically making a product for the American Market specific, that can get approved locally then and if it gets approved anywhere in the world else its a nice bonus for said people.
That is not the direction i want to see apple going into further, as that would stray me a way over time to keep purchasing their AW devices, as it become so localized to the American market and approval processes, that the product overtime with newer iterations may not be usefully for my country anymore. (unless approved but no ETAs and guarantees, you taking a bit of a gamble if you buy into a new advertised feature in that case)
Apple does not guarantee these new features will actually ever be usable in other countries.
It might be approved in a few weeks/ months/ years or perhaps NEVER.
The more of such features going to latch on to the AW in the future the more change is you will have a half working device in your country but are still deemed to pay full price as per the American market.
Apple is now touting the watch as a medical device. Heart monitoring and fall detection are two of the most prominent features.
Apple has committed to this and has informed Regulatory agencies around the world that their intentions are to be a player in the world of consumer and at least in medical monitoring.
Apple can and has stated what the capabilities of the watch are. They were very specific in saying they have obtained FDA approval and working with regulatory agencies around the world to make the feature available.
Apple has had to been working on this for at least 3 to 5 years. Even fast tracking takes this long.
Be sour all you want at apple. Many technology based devices have features built in that are not turned on.
Apple has promised nothing but has said they have the technology to provide these features.
And yes Hawaii is a state and falls under US FDA jurisdiction.
I am sure that would only be needed for Americans.
They are clearly only focusing on the USA market.
But at the same time max their profits,
basically come with some features they hardly do anything to get approved outside of the USA.
I love apple, but i feel i need to express some frustration with them at times.
Been in the industry for a while. Written thousands of pages regarding the regulatory subject matter.Attorneys are usually very expensive, but you're playing Apple's defens ecounsel for free. Amazing
Since the parliament, in the17th century, deposed Charles I, chopped off his head, and gave the crown to his son, the citizens have been holding a finger, or a thumb, on the crown.

Health Canada approval does not mean that the safety and efficacy of a device have been fully worked out. Caveat emptor. This timeline is absurdly long. When I asked Health Canada on twitter they said that for a device like that they could approve an application very quickly, as quickly as 15 days. No reason why it should take years in UK.
[doublepost=1538210382][/doublepost]I was wondering if anyone knows I go to the USA and purchase the watch, will I be able to use the ECG feature back in Australia? Sine the serial number is for a US watch?
Earlier this month, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 4 with a new electrocardiogram (ECG) feature that measures the electrical activity of your heartbeat, providing you with a heart rhythm classification that can be shared with your doctor. The feature isn't out yet, but it will be limited to Series 4 models in the United States later in 2018.

Today, 9to5Mac shared a potential time window for the launch of the ECG feature in the United Kingdom. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) explains that the process starts by examining Apple's documentation surrounding the ECG feature and performing an audit of the quality assurance system.
While this step doesn't appear to be lengthy, the proceeding steps could make the process longer. MHRA says it would require Apple to perform a new clinical investigation to judge the effectiveness of the ECG on Apple Watch, but Apple would likely not be able to use any of the data from the studies it's already completed because MHRA requires companies to notify the regulator in advance of a study.
Once the study is submitted, MHRA has 60 days to approve it (which may become longer if the regulators have further inquiries for Apple), and then Apple can begin the study. These last few steps are what the MHRA say "could potentially add years" onto the debut of the ECG in the UK. Despite the potential for years-long approval, Apple may find ways to expedite this process. While the United Kingdom remains part of the European Union, it's possible that Apple could receive approval from a broader regulatory body and sidestep the MHRA's processes.
In the United States, Apple has obtained de novo FDA clearance for the ECG feature in the Apple Watch Series 4 and the feature that can send a notification if an abnormal heart rate has been detected. However, FDA clearance is not the same as FDA approval and the FDA does not recommend that the ECG feature be used by those under 22 or those who have already been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.
The FDA warns that Apple's ECG app is not designed to replace traditional methods of diagnosis or treatment and is intended for informational use only.
Elsewhere, Apple has said it is working with Health Canada to bring the ECG functionality to the Canadian market, although no timeline has been specified.

Maybe being dim here - but could they not just have massive disclaimers saying the readings aren't regulated/approved and are advisory only? See a doctor etc.
the ECG will never be fda-approved. See my other posts in this thread as to why. Also, I’m not sure if there are any additional clearances required or not. They already have 2 from the fda.i am in healthcare, and no, devices do not need to be FDA approved, but it gives validation to any device and allows doctors to bill for the interpretations that their patients send them. I believe last time i looked the average reimbursement was abut $7 per interpretation that the doctor do from devices like this. Doesnt sound like much but imagine you are a cardiologist and you have an app that notifies you every time one of your patients does an ecg reading and you look at it for a few seconds and verbally dictate a 1 sentence interpretation into the phone which generates an official report with your digital signature and uploads it to the patients electronic medical record and bills the insurance automatically each time. It will also allow you to immediately send an alert to the patient telling them to go to an er if required.
I think apple assumes FDA approval is imminent and wants to come out of the gate as an FDA approved device/feature (the first of its kind on a watch) so there is no confusion.
I have used this device > and its a great feature https://www.alivecor.com/
I thought it was already cleared by the FDA?the ECG will never be fda-approved.
I had about 4 ECG's carried out on me about 2 weeks ago when it was thought I was having a heart attack. The machine they used was quite big and was on wheels, many wires were attached to my body with stickers and read outs were printed in real time. [Sarcasm] I am glad that Apple have managed to get all the above with a device that has multiple uses and attaches to the wrist [/Sarcasm]
