I assume it's the same in the US as it is here in the UK, but when we buy through the Edu shop we get 3 years warranty of parts...for FREE!!! But, to upgrade it to Applecare we have to pay £42 (that was for a MB). This £42 takes it from a parts only 3 year warrnanty, to the full applecare, with 3 years telephone support.

Enjoy the MBP :)

How do you get this? can you get it online through the education store?

Yeah. You know the chat thing in the uk apple online store? Go there and talk to one of the sales reps. They will try sell you something called a HMEA (sp) uplift i think it's called. This is the £42 extra i mentioned. But, if you ask them about the 3 years parts warranty they'll tell you about it. Basically, all HE purchases get 3 years free on parts.

And then, those sales reps in the chat can also make a quote etc for you so you can buy it.

Applecare really is a hot topic, but let me just say this:

By the numbers (probability and such), Applecare is NOT a good idea.

However, you will read plenty of emotional responses which tell you how Applecare saved people when they needed it most and such, so make what you will of it.

AppleCare is a lot like any other form of insurance; a losing proposition to the insured if they never use it, but greatly softens the blow of damages and often more than pays for itself in the rare cases when damages actually do occur. And like insurance, Apple wouldn't offer AppleCare if it didn't make them money.

Think of it this way: if you plan on keeping your computer a long time (3 years) and you don't think you can afford to pay several hundred in repairs if it breaks down (or buy a new system if it's too expensive to fix), then get the AppleCare before the warranty expires.

Also bear in mind that Apple is, unfortunately, quite stingy on telephone tech support, and without AppleCare will charge you to speak to them on the phone after 90 days. If you don't have an Apple Store near you that you can go to for help, then consider this too when thinking about AppleCare.

One last thing: Applecare is different from most insurance in that it won't cover physical damage due to abuse (liquid damage, physical abuse, etc.) or theft. It just covers breakdowns due to defects or reasonable wear and tear. For that, you should check with your credit card to see if they offer coverage, or with your (or your parents) homeowners policy to see if they cover it.

I start uni in september so I want to get a MBP before then, but my question is this.

If I went to my friend's uni to use the HE Apple store to buy it and ship it to my home address, would Apple freak out and go mental at me, or would they not care? Cause obviously you can only access the Apple HE store from a uni intranet...

They probably wouldn't check. If they do check then just wait. The worse thing that could happen is you would have to get a different education price (I presume you are in 6th Form or College).
