Congrats to the family!

And you as well, but I really would advise against going into debt over a computer—if you really are going to, at most get the 2.4GHz model.

I recently helped a lot of my family convert to macs..they like them alot..they just get it too.
it was an easy transition and it felt intuitive for them.
Congrats!

If you dont mind me asking, whats the benefit of buying this as opposed to any other wireless-N router? The linksys WRT400N is $130, so im just curious what makes the Airport Extreme worth $50 more?

to me as opposed to any other wireless rotuer...all the firmware and software updates are easily applied/notifications ...seems to just generally flow with each other apple product as well as non apple related products/computers.

most wireless routers in the same price range dont even offer usb ports or anything like that.
im able to hook up a drive formatted for mac and send files back and forth to comps on the network or over the net easily.

i mean you can get the same out of a server but i dont need/want a server or to maintain it.

it think despite the fact it is pricier..its definitely worth it..i think.

Afaik (they may have changed this), the Airport Extreme doesnt support QoS. I never even heard of QoS before i installed dd-wrt, and then i made sure i knew what i was doing before i tweaked it, and now i will never buy a router that doesnt support QoS.
I dont care about the "Mac Experience," i just want the best features at the best price, if i have to deal with an ugly interface i'll be happy knowing i saved $50 and got QoS support.

Regardless, thanks for clearing that up. The Airport has an apple on it, so people will buy it.

I'm just adding to the discussion about my opinion about the value of the AirPort, and you go and implicitly insult me. How nice.

In response to your another post you-know-where:

Where did I justify the purchase of the AirPort because it looks better? Point it out, please.

Where did I claim that the AirPort has the same features as the DD-WRT firmware? Again, point it out.

And justifying the purchase on a nicer interface... what's wrong with that? A nicer interface is easier to work with, and I'd like to make working with routers (an unavoidable thing) as pleasant as possible. If that's not important to you, there's nothing wrong with that. The BlackBerry arguably has more features than the iPhone (at least it definitely does when the first iPhone came out), and yet many people, including me, got the iPhone because the interface is better. Same with the iPod, there's many music players out there that has much more features than the iPod, but none has the interface. Again, what's wrong with that?

If the AirPort has no Apple logo on it, but has the same integration with Mac OS X, and the same ease of use, I'd still buy it. It just happens to have the Apple logo, so it's cool to say that I'm dumb to buy it?

its too bad that it is hard to argue getting a macpro over a pc tower. For price i mean. Pc towers a freaking cheap, and you can upgrade alot of stuff. I know i could get my dad going on a smoking fast macpro if they wernt so pricey

Yeah, they're a waste of money for but a few people. With the hackintoshes and everything (those days even Software Update works fine on hackintoshes), so there's little reason to spend $2,000 more on a Mac Pro.

(But $50 for a nicer interface and a seamless experience is just fine... :p :p :p)

yah, its an easier choice for notebooks b/c they are basically not upgradeable to the extent of towers. towers you can update graphics and drives easily to suite needs. O, one can dream of a top end mac pro and 32gb of ram;)

My parents' shopping list:

> 13" 2.0 GHz white MacBook (for my sister)

I specifically made sure they got the white MacBook for my sister for FireWire backup drives or in case I ever need to run Target Disk mode on it. ;)

Why would you need to run Target Disk mode on it? Its her machine?
Plus why couldn't she choose her own machine

I'm not having a go at you, but your MBP has firewire too so you could Target Disk till your heart's content

for someone who uses their laptop all day but knows nothing about networking, its worth the extra. If there's one thing I hate dealing with, its routers and annoying interfaces and passwords. Makes me pull my hair out.

And to help the economy, a check card was used. :D

whoa, you really went all out! That's amazing.
