Watching Zuck, Dorsey and the Google guy (don't even care to remember his name) in congressional hearings, it's made me think apple will be my next phone.

That's saying something. Oh, and one tablet. Could even get to a watch. Then I stop.
What do you use now?

Apple can win every battle except for one, "Intentional Suppression" of Third-Party App Innovation !

That one could lose them control / ownership of the App Store !

Those full page ads have merely been the catalyst to get everyone talking about FB. If nobody had commented on those two ads, I know how implausible that is but hear me out, then there wouldn’t really be a conversation to be had about how ludicrous FB’s assertions are. However, here we all are rolling our eyes at FB. Now FB can reference those ads in future arguments knowing full well that while everyone will have already dismissed them as disingenuous, they will continue to uphold them as valid points of view. It’s disinformation at its best because we are all paying attention to it.

I'll be 'getting back' an iPad Pro after a holiday iPad Air gift lands in someone else's hands. Then I can remove Facebook from everything but that one piece of hardware, with Apple at least kneecapping the Facebook Human Simulant as much as possible.

Also, this all gives me a pretty good reason for finally ditching Android and cleaning up my "Need to Know" OS list of yet one more item, with Windows, MacOS, and iOS being the final entries.

Targeted adverts, when I have seen them when my blocker has been deactivated, invariably just show me the very same things I had searched for a little earlier.
If you know how to play the field, you can get 10-20% discounts by using digital marketing strategies "against" them.

If you are already interested in a product, show it by entering the website and putting some stuff in the basket. Initiate checkout, even give them your email if possible. Then leave the website without paying.

By showing your interest you become a warm lead, someone worth converting. There are different levels of "warm" - visited the site / looked at a product / added to cart / initiated checkout.

The closer you get to paying, the more aggressive their tactic will become.

If the shop is managed in any reasonable way, you will start seeing remarketing offers in ads - usually offering a discount to come back and finish the order. If they have your email, you will be messaged directly with a similar offer.

I do it all the time 😎

Finally Apple is leveraging its strength as a builder of devices that people pay for. They other guys just build "free" spyware disguised in various forms and now everyone can see what they have been up to. Facebook using full page ads to protest is like cutting the branch that they are sitting on -- it only makes it more obvious how their entire business is built on invasion of privacy.

Google, FB and Twitter are so disingenuous and phony - they make me sick.

They share a user database between them and Google and FB have colluded to control online advertising. All three have gone in front of Congress repeatedly and lied through their teeth - something other people have been imprisoned for.

But apparently they are above the same laws.
As someone who works in ad tech your response is hilarious

As it has been almost from the beginning. And the more companies they buy, the longer their arms get, and the farther their fingers get into their users personal lives.

I dropped Facebook, and I'll bet they are still tracking me with some of the old fingers they have in things. They need to be spanked. Hard...

This is action is one of the main reasons I never went near Facebook pages ever. Wouldn't trust 'em with a ten foot pole or a twenty dollar check! If this abomination disappeared from the face of this earth tomorrow, no tears, perhaps a sigh of relief, at least until next bunch of hooligans rolls into town.

Facebook, Instagram, Giphy, and how many other acquisitions? They buy more companies, get bigger, their power grows, and their fingers too. They seek to be able to warp politics to their benefit, like so many other corporations in America.

Capitalism is killing America. Capitalism: everything has a price, and nothng has any value.

As a user, and as a game developer, I understand there is a balance between sharing data and privacy. The majority of users have decided on free-to-play (as getting something for free will override pretty much anything else), which means sharing data to make it viable. I understand both sides (it is pretty much Facebook at one end and Apple at the other), but lean towards Apple's approach. As a British person already suffering from Brexit, and about to get much worse, I understand compromise very well, seemingly much better than those making the decisions.

I hope a good result is found soon, for both Brexit and app privacy. But I fear neither will be sorted satisfactorily.

Of course it's laughable! Facebook routinely has endangered civil liberties and free speech with its "Independent Fact Checkers" which were later proven to be FALSE after the election! I still have posts that are now public knowledge and on every media source that Facebook said never happened! They don't even own up to their mistakes either because it was planned! This is why I think Facebook's 230 protections should be stripped away. They have crossed the line.

I own a small brick and mortar store. Facebook is the last company I would think that has my back. Due to their algorithms my ad payments to them have gone up but the feedback and impressions I get has drastically reduced. Guess what.. they don't care and have no way of actually assisting me with making my money go further. Get Bent FB!
This. Facebook is charging small businesses huge premium for the so-called “targeting.” Advertising on them is getting more and more expensive, even without Apple. And then there’s their “algorithm” that can shadowban or even ban your ad account if you for some reason used a “wrong” hash tag.

Facebook has zero motivation to “protect” small businesses. All they cared is making themselves looked like the victim, even though they’re the one holding the knife and stabbing.
