Can you tell from the provided information which of these items is appearing in the Dock? I don't know what all of the information means so hopefully something there points to an app opening and instantly closing (within maybe 300ms of it opening).

btw, thank you for looking this information over. I really appreciate the help. :)

Well there is. Not to sound rude but I'm growing impatient with this machine right now.

Just as long as you're not growing impatient with me.. it's not like I'm getting paid for this. ;)

I'll bet you it's the HP crap.

Does it matter? Finding the problem first is more important.

Otherwise, if the printer is TCP, then yes, of course you can print over the network without HP interfering. :)

How do I know if it is TCP? I've got it hooked up to an AirPort Express downstairs, does that tell you anything?

You might have a memory leak somewhere......have you checked to see if all of your RAM is registering?

Do you have any shareware on your book?

All RAM registering in About This Mac. No shareware that I'm aware of.

Well, since no printers (that I know of) print via UDP, and there's definitely no printers that print via ICMP, it's likely to be TCP. But anyways, again, does it matter? You need to do what you need to do to solve the problem. This is one of the steps. If that's what it turns out to be, then you tackle the printing issue (if there is indeed an issue).

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but what are you basing a "memory leak" on? There's no symptoms described there that are remotely synonymous with a memory leak (like increased CPU usage or massive amounts of pageins).

I've deleted everything I can find from HP, but it hasn't helped. Should I even take out the drivers for my printer?

Any ideas of where else to look for HP items? I used Spotlight but I don't feel satisfied, like there's still more somewhere.

Just checking everything (no matter if he does not see the symptom)....always good to check everything..

The quick Force Quitting of apps to recreate this affect is based on a possible memory leak, according to others experiencing this issue. Just FYI, I'm not saying it's true or false but I can recreate the issue this way.

Also, just so you know, Page Ins/Outs after being logged in for about 2 minutes:

21,117/0

Is that normal?

Deleted ALL HP items I could find, even the printer itself from System Preferences.

HP crap still shows in sudo fs_usage at wake. Issue still exists very much so.

HP junk is loaded in RAM, you need to restart to ensure it's being gone. If it's still there in fs_usage after you log back in, then you missed some, likely in /Library/StartupItems/, though I'm fairly confident that you removed anything there.

That doesn't seem untoward, since there's no pageouts. As long as you have enough free/inactive RAM, then that's not likely an issue.

Shut down, rebooted, after deleting everything I could find, it still persists. Any idea on how to find the items associated with the following data from sudo fs-usage (excluding the "mds" items if necessary)?

Shut down, rebooted, after deleting everything I could find, it still persists. Any idea on how to find the items associated with the following data from sudo fs-usage (excluding the "mds" items if necessary)?

Clearly you missed something. Becuase there it is running.

Try reading the man pages for fs_usage to find flags that might be interesting to you.

FYI: mds is Spotlight.

EDIT: Have you tried clearing all your caches? /Library/Caches/ and ~/Library/Caches/ ?

No idea what man pages are, or flags. Sorry.

<sigh> You're getting in over your head here.

Man pages are "manual pages", they tell you what a command does, and what flags (arguments) it has to do various more specific actions.

http://www.hmug.org/man/1/fs_usage.php

If you think that it's HP related, use the Activity Monitor to try and find and kill the HP Communications process and see if that fixes the issue. If it does, then you just need to figure out where/how it's being run when you log in.

I'm not in over my head. I'm very computer savvy, I just have to be taught at one point... like everyone.

If YOU think it's HP related, I will do what YOU think I should do. I'm here because I have tried all of my own ideas, so I'm looking for your advice which has been great. I don't mean to sound immature, but I've no idea what to do from here, I need help from whoever can help me with this issue.

"HP Communications" is running in Activity Monitor after startup. Closing it has no affect on the issue because opening and quickly closing ANY app causes this issue, as does it for many others as well so I'm not worried about that problem. I just need to find out (1) if this is the app that is behaving the way, and (2) how to stop it.

When you (or anyone else reading this) looks at the info I posted, can you tell what needs to be done/deleted/changed/etc?

In Activity Monitor it says HP Communications' parent process is WindowServer, if that means anything to anyone.

Also, I tried to go:

sudo fs_usage -w -f filesys HP Communications

and it didn't work, just gave me a layout of how to use fs_usage.

OK, I do mean to sound rude here..

What you're seing is not all that common, and trying to deduce the problem via Forum is VERY hard. So you need to have MASSIVE patience (and thanks) for anyone willing to help you out here.

I am grasping at straws. I have no idea what the problem is, and truely without being able to sit there and look at it myself, it's almost impossible to diagnose via Forum. I know from past experience HP does a piss poor job at writing drivers/apps for Mac OS X, I see no reason to think anything different in this instance.

You've been told what the "easiest" solution here is. Back up and reinstall a vanilla version of the OS. Unfortuinately you don't have the resources for that. I suggest getting the resources, or continuing to limp along with any info any can give you towards your end without getting snippy because you don't feel like it's moving along at a pace that suits you.

If you used Spotlight to search for everything related to HP, then you need to try using the Find function in the Finder. Spotlight totally ignores /Library and /System and is compltely worthless for anything but searching in your home directory.

Alternately you can use "find" to search your HD for the HP stuff.

sudo find / -name "HP Communications"

Be prepared to wait a while.

If you're new to UNIX and the command line, I suggest starting here:

http://osxfaq.com/Tutorials/LearningCenter/index.ws

EDIT: It could just as easily turn out to be completely unrealted to HP Comminucations.

Because the arg only allows for "filesys", not a specification of WHICH filesystem you're looking for, so it doesn't understand what "HP Communications" is as an argument.

WindowServer is a CoreService application that (basically) is app that draws all the windows you see around all apps.

I see. Well Activity Monitor told me where to find HP Communications.app and I just deleted it and rebooted.

It was located in /Library/Printers/hp/, will I have to reinstall this app before I can print now?

By the way, issue resolved. :D

Yay, new issue. I can't add any new printers.

I deleted my HP printer and now I can't add any printers at all, click the + doesn't do anything now.
