Was this firmware install typical of other firmware installs?

I'm a relatively new Mac user -- about 6 months now. So, I'm still finding out things about the Mac :)

This firmware update was different from most software updates that I have received because
1) I ended up having to run it from Applications \ Utilities and
2) it wasn't a simple matter of re-starting. I had to shut down, then hold the power button until it made the long beep before I could get the firmware updated.

Just out of curiosity -- Is this typical? Do firmware updates usually make you go through the shutdown and hold the power button thing?

Yes. A firmware update will always require this, however these updates are fairly rare. The update was needed on the 08 pros due to problems with the sleep mode.

Is this firmware update only for '08 Mac Pros or all Intel-based Mac Pros because it's not in the Software Update nor will it install from the standalone download.
Only the 08 pros. Earlier pros use a 32-bit EFI which doesn't have the moody sleep issues found in the newer ones.

anyone know if this update fixes the sleep / restart problem everyone has been having? I guess I'll find out soon. Before the update i was still having issues with restarting after sleep. thx.
