The plot thickens

I spoke to a friend who works at Apple and he reckons the logic board has gone on my machine from the way it looks at the moment.

Before it broke today, it has had occasional issues charging and once refused to come out of sleep due to (if I heard the error codes corrently) bad RAM. I restarted and it worked again. Now swapping between stop and brand new crucial proves ineffective so it looks dead for good.

I am taking it to Apple tomorrow morning and I will be seeing what can be done but I reckon it will be a lengthy repair and I really need this laptop for work :(

mine was perfect before this damn update.. :\

i also need this laptop for work, hopefully i have another laptop (windows sigh!) to use while my MBP is reparing :(

I have also a problem after I finished updating my 10.6.8 MBP through Apple Software Update. In boot time, I heard few sounds and the screen flickered a few times. Is this normal? Then when I was in desktop screen, my system suddenly hanged after I opened up iTunes. Now, I just restarted my MBP, and now everything seems fine already. Btw, my Boot ROM Version is MBP81.0047.B0E after the update, which is different than what Apple tells us. Anyone can confirm this in their 10.6.8 system?

Yep, same here. Downloaded the update (software update). First got a long beep, some screen flashes and it rebooted after a while.
Rom version is now MBP81.0047.B0E. So no updated EFI for me.

Apple needs to fix this. I will not try to update it for now.

Also make sure to keep it plugged-in during the EFI updates because it will stall out like before off the battery.

EDIT: Mine is still on EFI 2.1 (MBP81.0047.B0E) and nothing is showing up under the software update. The white light stays off until the screen/system goes to sleep then it starts flashing.

Your Boot ROM did get updated. As someone else stated, it looks like the support page initially listed a different version number.

The support page here: MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 states that is the correct version.

So...definitely a buggy EFI update, but its working.

How come we are reporting MBP81.0047.B1E (as is the Apple site) and some have been reporting MBP81.0047.B0E???? Why the difference and I can see the poster's confusion as to whether it updated.

All of those strings are for the EFI 2.1. I might be totally wrong but I don't think the EFI 2.2 update is going to apply to 2011 MBPs that aren't running Lion, seeing as how it's main purpose was to introduce Internet Recovery which isn't available for Snow Leopard.

That page does list that the required OS is Lion 10.7 or later for the update.

I downloaded and updated the firmware using Snow Leopard; holding ALT during startup now also brings up a WiFi network selector for recovery. Boot ROM version is B1E.

Then, sir, it seems that I am totally in the wrong. Please pass me the ketchup so I may eat my hat. ;)

me too.. MBP 2011 killed by EFI 2.2 update

Same here. Tried it on the MBA and it worked. So I updated the MBP 17 inch and the screen just hung... Now I cannot even boot up at all. I have to try 30-40 times shutting down and up before the machine can work once in a while. Hope Apple fixes this as there are just too many people with this issue after the EFI update.

After reading this thread I was a bit leery of updating, but I did it last night on my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and it updated without a hitch and I now have Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B1E.

Still no solution or nobody more with this issue. I went this morning to an Apple Store and they set an appointment for next wednesday...

Thanks for all the info here!

Fixed

Got Applecare to call me (use Express Lane support system) and they arranged a Quickdrop for the MacBook Pro.

Dropped it off at Bluewater Apple store in the UK and 3 and a bit hours later I have an email saying its fixed.

Returned about 30 mins after and they said it had to be a direct logic board replacement as mine was useless.

So try to use the Quickdrop function - saves time and now Im typing on said laptop again!

Good luck all those affected

(On a side note, including tax - without a warranty the repair would have cost over £400 - ouch!)

did you make sure you plugged it in on updating? I forgot and then it kept beeping at me and refusing to load so i grabbed my brick real quick and plugged it in, then all went fine.

the problem is related to an update from Apples.. if MBP is out of warranty and bricked by Apple Software, repair should be free

@GuitarG20

MBP was plugged during the update.. tomorrow i'll call retail to know what's the situation :(

for now i'm using windows :(

I know I have a HDD but mine is taking more than a minute to boot up now...

I had this exact same problem the other day, I updated to the latest EFI, mbp rebooted to a white screen and a constant 3 beep error. Kept turning it off and on again and thank god it booted after 45 minutes. Nearly pooped my pants there!

Take it to your Apple Store

I had the appointment for this morning, and they are gonna change the motherboard... :(. At least, they told me that if nothing more is wrong I'll have my laptop by tomorrow, let's cross the fingers so

Solution to this problem:

Go to your Apple Store

Thanks for all the support guys!

I'm now on Lion but I installed the EFI 2.2 update while I was still on Snow Leopard, before installing my brand new SSD and before downloading Lion.
My boot ROM version changed like indicated on the Apple site.
I downloaded the update using the SL Software Update app and had no problems at all.

Can someone tell me what issue i am looking out for? I updated last night and the machine runs like a lion and purrs like a kitten. No issues

Could it be that it depends on whether you install the update manually or by scanning for updates in the Software Update app?

I had the same problems as the OP. I brought it into my apple store and they kept it for diagnosis and repair.
