It's not a normal occurrence. Taking mine to Apple today to get a replacement expedited in 5-7 days.

I have a genius appointment today but everything I've read points to some sort of hardware issue as many people are receiving replacements. In any event, it is for sure not something that should be occurring. I expect they will recommend replacement. I will update with confirmed information later this afternoon.

Update: Apple Genius Bar is sending my watch off to their repair depot who will determine if it can be repaired or needs to be completely replaced. Either way, I will receive a fixed or completely new unit back in 3-5 days.

Hear it as well on mine.
Would rather wait until they have some in stock at an Apple Store and then make a genius appointment. I assume that once they have stock you could just get it replaced on the spot if turns out to be some kind of factory defect instead of software related?

Have any update to share? Mine was sent in twice without any repair done.

update: I lived with it until today when it popped real loud and the screen crapped out. after looking at it you can clearly see a small burn/shorted spot on the upper right with discolored pixels surrounding below it. The scree only shows red if it comes on at all. When it does come on it flickers and dims before fading out. Also the right side is dimmer then the left.

called apple "go to apple store, sorry I can't get them to pick up in store but I'm sure they can replace it and you don't need a genius appointment for a product that completely doesn't work"

Drive to annapolis (30 min with traffic) get to the mall and get told "oh yeah it isn't supposed to look like that, we can see you at 5:45 so a tech can look at it ( 1hr 15min later). So i drag my son around the crowded mall and pay to get subpar chipotle when i had a bangin steak at home calling my name. Back at the apple store, "Oh wow, yeah there isn't any physical damage. I can see the spot under the glass and definitely have never see a screen act this way. Sadly we don't exchange, we send off to repair but let me go check. (10 minutes passes) "Yeah sorry you will have to send it in then come back and pick it up" even after telling him I was sent there I was told there was nothing they could do. I told him to put it in the notes that there was no sign of abuse or physical damage. Then I called applecare and told them I wanted one sent out and I would send mine back afterwards. Now I just have to wait 2-3 days.

note: I like apple service, a lot, but they really talked like that and the phone support guy seemed new as he was stumbling around every answer

another note: I did have to put a hold on my CC to get one sent first but this was I don't get the same watch back cause mine has a few scuffs on it anyways.

Thanks for filling in the (not great) ending to this story.

Moral of the story for the rest of us: if it starts popping when the screen comes on... time for a replacement.

Sorry to hear about your support troubles... but hopefully it will be fixed up soon.

I ended up chatting with apple shortly after my last post and replaced it with an express replacement before it got any worse. It is definitely an issue with some of the early watches.

I've heard this a few times from my 42mm SS as well.

The best way to describe the sound is if you're familiar with e-cigarettes. I am an ex smoker who smokes ecigs now and the higher end, more powerful ecigs (most often looks like a box instead of a cigarette) sometimes "pop" when you fire them.

This sound from the watch sounds identical to that and I'm pretty sure I even felt it "pop" once. I think its as if the haptic got stuck half way through a rotation or something and smacked the speaker popping back into place when the screen gave it a kick.

I still hear it on mine but only if I put my ear right up to the Watch.

perfect description of the popping sound for those of us "sub-ohm'rs". I was hoping that it was the haptic but apparently not. There is now a near perfect black spot under that previous spot that is slowly spreading and the color returned to normal....not sure wtf is going on, wonder if it got water in it as I do swim with it. That would explain why it happened at the moment of the popping sound if it is the sound of something getting an electric signal, screen or haptic.

the deepest spot in our pool is only like 4 1/2 ft and i rarely rest my wrist at the bottom of the pool...

Last update: to my surprise I got my replacement around 10am today. Notes on replacement as follows: new box sealed, doesn't seem refurbished. NO SHORTING SOUND AT WRIST LIFT AT ALL! Not even next to my ear. The color or the aluminum seems a bit different. Classier if you will but that may be the new effect (though I really feel it looks different than launch day space gray). Seems like there was some really good hush hush tweaks after they got some feedback.

Has anyone had a repair or replacement for this sound issue? Its driving me crazy and became more regular and louder today.

Look above, thread starter oftheheavens had his replaced with a new one without the sound.

This is correct^^

New note and unfortunate as I hate dealing with customer service and feeling like I have to beg for the right stuff, I usually don't even return stuff to retail stores as I don't like the feeling of complaining to someone and the result resting in their hands. ANNNNNYWAYS, the watch I received had a louder vibrate function than my phone. Had a family member jokingly tell me to silence my already silenced watch during a movie we were watching. Sounds like metal on plastic any time the Taptic goes off. After looking on Apple forums this is also a common problem. I have never had to cycle through apple products like this and it is rather frustrating.

And with one phone call I have another one coming tomorrow with no questions asked. Guess I am just getting unlucky with this product. It happens and I'm fine with it as long as I'm taken care of and they are doing a great job with that.
