Eleven women accused of being witches have been burned to death by a mob in the west of Kenya, police say.

A security operation has been launched to hunt down villagers suspected of killing the women in Kisii District.

The area has witnessed similar attacks in the past when people suspected of engaging in witchcraft have been killed or ostracised.

But correspondents say that this is a surprisingly large number of people to be attacked at the same time.

Local official Mwangi Ngunyi condemned the murders.

"People must not take the law into their own hands simply because they suspect someone," he told AFP news agency.

Good. Those witches are more trouble than they're worth. They turned me into a newt...

EDIT: Damn! I never get the joke...

Different culture, different fears, different reaction, and different notion of right and wrong. I'm not saying that what they did was right, but that's because people in this forum come from a similar enough background that we'd all have a similar sense of morality. It's weird. I'm not defending their acts, but I'm kind of defending their understanding of the situation, as it's probably far different from our own.

Morons in Kenya

Burning people for witchcraft may be related to a different notion of right and wrong but it is utterly idiotic. That is the KEY and only valid way to view this behaviour. Moronic, ignorant and worthy of pity.

The earlier posts seem to have the right reaction - laugh at them.

There is no need to attempt to appreciate their understanding of the situation (other than through forensic psychiatry). This is not some multi-cultural excentricity - this is mass murder by cretins.

A secure mental hospital is where the murderers should be.

Of course but they are one of many countries basically still in the middle ages compared with the modern industrialized world.

I'm not judging them. Simply making an observation.

I completely agree. When Iran hanged two gay kids I didn't hear anyone pleading for understanding a different culture.

Lol @ spookthehampster.

I don't really get the "newt" joke though.

As far as culture is concerned though, isn't Kenya predominantly Christian?

Ooooooh, the one where the man with shaving cream on his face says "She turned me into a newt"!

Funny how some things can totally disappear from your mind until your memory is jogged.
