hdmi certification. it's purpose is to record hd content, including premium copy protected content. there's no way hdmi would get certified on this product. same with the hauppauge hd pvr. only component on that one, too.

But the hd pvr has digital audio in and out.

I've had an eyetv hybrid for about a year now and i really love it. Works great recording 1080p tv shows. Edit out the comercials and run the output throught handbrake. I'll be watching to see how the early adopters like this new product from Elgato.

Um, I'm watching HD channels on my Mac Pro with a USB Elgato Hybrid, just screw your cable into the back of the device, scan for SD and HD channels, sign into "TV Guide" (used to be free with Titan TV, sucks that's changed), download your local channel guide, and you're set. You can schedule shows to record just as you may with your cable television DVR, and streaming them on your local WiFi to your AppleTV or iPod/iPhone is simple, and streams them using the iPhone EyeTV app ($4.99). HD channels included, the only downside is a lack of HD cable outputs, but when everything is wireless and HD, who needs it? I've only used the cables to digitize old VHS and Beta tapes, and of course those aren't HD. It was only $149, the size of a USB thumb drive, and it's about all most individuals need. In the end, it's only extreme gamers and such that need all the bells and whistles for gaming and bragging rights, beyond that it's great for most needs.

I own one too and it's great. I don't know what that other guy was getting at telling folks it doesn't have HD... if you give it a HD channel it will record and save the program in HD. The last two nights I recorded all the Lost programs that were on and I wasn't even home.

I tried the eyeTV years ago and returned it because while the hardware seemed fine, the software was horrid. Has eyeTV's software improved at all in the past couple years? :(

The recording software is great imo. The HD signal captured by my Mac looks great. I use their editor to edit out the comercials. Only take a few minutes to do it manually. What I don't like and don't use is the eyetv software video converter (their handbrake). Instead, I take the output from eyetv and run it through handbrake and convert it to the format I want.

Quicktime

Does Quicktime recognize the EyeTV as a capture device? I want to record game consoles in DV/HDV so I can edit, not some H.264 format.

I'll stick with my Hauppauge HD PVR. It has video out built in making recording game consoles a lot easier instead of just recording TV.

I already have eyetv software. Does that mean I can just buy Hauppauge HD PVR and use eyetv software?

I think Hauppauge HD PVR has more inputs & outputs than eyetv hd...

Anyone?

As long as you have EyeTV version 3.1 or higher the Hauppauge HD PVR will work right away.

And yes, the Hauppauge HD PVR does have more inputs and outputs than the EyeTV HD.

I want to get this for my parents, will this work with Dish network or DirectTV? I believe my parents have Dish network at home, and would love to record to their iMac. How is this different than the EyeTV 250 plus? And do they need to have HD programming or can they record regular satellite channels as well?

If you can name me one network station that broadcast in HD over the air seven years ago, I'll give you that one.

My local CBS affiliate, KTHV, started broadcasting HD in 2002. I’m sure bigger markets started even earlier.

This is nice and all, but makes me wonder, why no HDMI? Why have 5 cables instead of one?
HDCP, my friend.

Composite and S-video aren't HD, yet that's all their products offered. So no, they've never had HD. They just liked to act like they did.
EyeTV hybrid does HD recordings of non-copy protected channels just beautifully (I have split my comcast HD cable to modem and eyeTV). I have this device for about two years and am happy with it.

What?

I've been recording beautiful broadcast HD with my Elgato 250 plus for well over two years. Check your facts.

My problem is that I don't see an input for broadcast signals. Are they dropping support in new products, or is there an adaptor?

Ugh, disappointing. I'd been following Elgato's rumors on this for a few weeks now - only to find out it's a Mac OS rehash of technology from a few years ago.

One has to assume Jobs is intentionally keeping proper copy protection out of OS X (no Blu-ray, no CableCard, etc.), just so he can sell his warez through the iTunes Store.

As others have said ... IR blaster in 2010??? Lets get real folks.

I'm able to view (free) HD programming through my basic cable and dvr it with EyeTV and elgato tuner and have been for a few years now. The premium channels didn't work since they were scrambled. I suspect you still need to use a cable box with this new hardware which is where the component input comes from.

Seven years ago? Try 14! WRAL in North Carolina started broadcasting in HD in 1996. It became more common with the standardization of ATSC in 1998.

Question - do you still need the cable box for this solution (I'm on comcast) or can the Elgato just figure it out from the coaxial cable? And does it have a remote control? Right now, I have an HD box in the bedroom, connected to the TV; I've been thinking of consolidating this into a 27" iMac so I can do both TV & computer in one device.

For Hybrid you do not need a cable box, BUT you'll only get the channels broadcast unencrypted (so for most cable systems that is the locals (both SD and HD) plus usually one or two other random channels (in my case I get the sd feed of TBS and Food Network and for some odd reason, the HD feed of Showtime2)). The hybrid does have a remote.

The whole point of the new EyeTV box is to allow people to get encrypted cable channels into EyeTV.

I have the 250 plus and it is unreliable. FOr every few good recordings I'll get one that has video that freezes, out of sync audio, no audio, or no recording at all (like the Lost finale!!!).

I've had it replaced, did a fresh install of the OS, software and am having problems again. Others report issues too. Better than a VCR, but hardly as reliable as a real DVR.

No. Get Air Video from the App Store.

(Apologies for the OT discussion..) but thanks a lot for this suggestion. Air Video works great, better than I expected. I can even play .flv files on my iPhone off my home Mac (obviously transcoding on demand). It's a pity it doesn't also support audio - it'd be great to have both in one app - but it's a great and cheap solution, thanks!

If some one beat me to it, sorry

Ok here from wikipedia...

HDTV sets became available in the U.S. in 1998 and broadcasts began around November 1998. The first public HDTV broadcast was of the launch of the space shuttle Discovery and John Glenn's return to space; that broadcast was made possible in part by Harris Corporation.[3] The first major sporting event broadcast in HD was Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000.

I also vaguely remember a local broadcaster airing a few hours a week of HD Programing in the early 2000's kind of like a test.

I've always joked that ElGato developed artificial intelligence, evil, spiteful artificial intelligence that knows which TV shows you really really want to see and won't be repeated, and then doesn't record them.
They've also never made a stable version of their eyeTV software and have a bad habit of shaking down their customers for upgrades just to keep their stuff running. Want to upgrade your OS? Make sure you pay ElGato too, or your EyeTV won't work with it.
No thanks. I'll steer clear of anything this company ever makes.

I bought my EyeTV Hybrid back when Leopard came out, and have upgraded fine without giving EyeTV anymore money, and I have the most current version of the software.

I am buying the EyeTV HD, but that is a different device and allows me to record premium HD which is something I have been wanting to do for a while now.

They provide many software updates and bug fixes, and I have been very happy with them. They also are a company. When did making money become so evil? I am glad to support them.

I need a way to get video from a DVR to my computer. Not interested in recording tv or anything, just wanna take recordings I have and get them to the computer. ideally in HD
