Tesla CEO Elon Musk today said on Twitter that he once reached out to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla, but Cook "refused to take the meeting." Musk says that he attempted to contact Apple during the "darkest days of the Model 3 program," offering Tesla for 1/10 of its value.

Musk's tweet came in response to Reuters' recent report about Apple's work on an upcoming Apple Car.

According to Reuters, Apple is aiming to begin production on an Apple Car by 2024, using "next-level" battery technology that involves a "monocell" design that bulks up individual battery cells and frees up space inside the battery pack by removing pouches and modules that hold battery materials. Apple is also planning to use lithium iron phosphate battery technology.

Musk in a separate tweet said that the Apple Car rumors are "strange if true" and that a monocell design is "electrochemically impossible."

There have been rumors that Apple once considered a purchase of Tesla and made a "serious bid" of $240 per share back in 2013, but given Musk's comments, that may not be accurate.

Apple and Tesla have been at odds since Apple started working on the Apple Car project and have notoriously poached employees from one another. In 2015, in fact, Musk said that he calls Apple the "Tesla Graveyard." "If you don't make it at Tesla, you go work at Apple," he said.

If and when Apple does start manufacturing a car aimed at consumers, Tesla and Apple will be direct competitors. That could happen as early as 2024 or 2025 if Apple's work on an Apple Car stays on track.

I am for one glad that that acquisition never went through. I love Apple, but healthy competition never hurt anyone.
And tesla is absolutely whipping every other vehicle manufacture at the moment, when it comes to experience, which is what apples always been about.
It’s finally exciting to see someone beating apple at their own game for once

Are you for real with this comment? Tesla isn't beating Apple at doing ANYTHING. Apple is at an Alpha stage right now with their car project. Sounds like you just want to see Apple fall down flat on their butts because your comment makes no sense. You mentioned competition. If anything it's TESLA that needs the competition from Apple since they have a current product that needs a competitor. SMH.

How are they beating them in their own game if they are not playing in the same game ?! eeefffff

Tim Cook's hesitancy to make large acquisitions and instead focus on mainly organic growth is admirable. However, in hindsight, the analyst calls for Apple to purchase Netflix and Tesla many years ago seem like they would have been a good idea.

Apple has done just fine without making these purchases, but has been unable to grow revenue the past 4-5 years until the pandemic spurred growth. It would be interesting to know how a Netflix and Tesla purchase years ago would have changed Apple's course.

Disclaimer: Apple and Tesla are some of the largest portions of my portfolio.

You either don't follow Apple as you stated or you're making this nonsense up. Over the past 4-5 years Apple has become the top company with over 2 trillion in valuation, and they did that without a car or a Netflix, or the pandemic.

And how is this a blunder? Apple is far wealthier than Tesla. Just because Telsa reaches out Apple to purchase the company doesn't mean Apple has to do it. Apple doesn't need Tesla to build cars.

they've been building an EV since 2015
they want products to be built in USA
they need battery experts
they need AI experts
they need engineers
they could easily use the mapping data gathered by the several hundred thousand cars in the fleet today

it makes all the sense in the world to acquire them.

Tesla is going to get Dreamcasted when the Apple car appears. Elon might try dirty tricks because he is demented.

Jobs snubbed Elon too. Jobs could smell a rodent from a mile away.
Not sure why you must resort to personal attacks. Elon is such a polarizing figure, but there are plenty of facts or quantitative statements you could provide to make your point instead.
