But what is "mostly unregulated"?

That is the issue -- it still needs moderation and that still always ends up with subjective definitions that require enforcement.

It's so difficult, if not impossible, in this mega polarized world where many can't even agree on basic facts about many things.
I think I would say the only real content that should be blocked/removed is child abuse images, doxxing/harassment, and fraudulent/malware content.

I don't think we need social media to unilaterally decide that a NY Post story about Hunter Biden's business dealings is off-limits for sharing.

Content moderation that favors a partisan political agenda IS Censorship ??‍♂️

MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News ought to be shut down forever
FYI: companies are allowed to censor at will. That has always been allowed and there is no reason to "shut them down" as a result.

There's the problem..

How do you know if a news story is fraudulent content or not?
If a story is totally BS, it shouldn't be shared to zillions of people, right?

Who decides?

See how fast this gets messy?

(not poking at you by the way --- just highlight how hard this really actually is)

Everyone is projecting - either what they want or what they fear - on Musk. My guess is very little will change and Musk will get bored with running Twitter pretty quick.
He gets about 1M new followers per week on Twitter now. I don't see him getting bored with it.

Just a reminder that less content moderation ≠ more free speech.

It just means that the speech of the vulnerable, the harassed, and the targets of hate speech will be silenced, or at least chilled

Elon has a long hill to climb to prove that he now cares about the fair, but perhaps not favorable, views of everyone, particularly as they relate to him and his companies personally.
Just an observation from someone who does not partake in Fb, Insta or Twitter; an option if someone who has an account who feels is being harassed or targeted is to report it to the local authorities to weed out potential intent or just bluffing or trolling. Another option is to just ignore the mean posts or limit interaction on said platform things that were done well before social media metastasized.

In all due respect I find a certain percentage of population and generation who are addicted to social media and require constant virtual interaction and reassurance from their circle in-order to function, this is extremely sad and probably what contributes to hate, suicide and to a certain degree violence.

Well said.

It's a shame. I'll remain optimistic, but this could go in a bad direction if he allows for prominent voices who were previously banned for racism, bigotry, and disinformation back on the platform. I expect more hate speech and violence in the future of America.

Oops..
You just fell into the trap..

I meant fraudulent as in "this is Key Bank, please click here to login to you account and claim your $500", not "the sun totally rotates around a flat earth" or "drinking your own piss cures covid" style falsehoods.

The problem isn't necessarily free speech. The problem is the people that yell the most on these social media outlets are from the most extreme spectrums, often with misinformation, and it's leading to collective illusions of reality, right and wrong and what's best for the majority of society.

No better example than how polarized politics are at the moment. Most people prior to social media leaned more in the middle vs the extreme right vs left mentality now.

What's the solution? I don't know but probably not Elon Musk owning twitter.

Because twitter is the sewer of the Internet. You can only go up from the absolute bottom. Start by firing the board members that own less than 1% stock.

Once the deal closes, the company will be private and nobody will own stock (as I understand it). I believe that also means the board would be dissolved unless the banks providing financing have some agreement to install some degree of a board to help protect their interests.

I don’t think people realise but you can have free speech and limits on harassment and hate speech. These are two distinct things. I think he’s been more concerned about how people have been shut down due to ‘misinformation’ which is a loosely defined term with too many caveats. I personally see this as a win for society. There isn’t a popular platform that allows free and open conversations and dialogue as they’ve been too concerned about their shareholders as opposed to the beginning overarching future of open dialogue. This should allow an open platform to all, but can still have limits and moderation for harassment such as death threats for example. As much as I disagree with Trump politically, I didn’t like that he was removed from Twitter and YouTube even recently due to misinformation. Because who decided what is misinformation? For example, some political stances or scientific discoveries can take time to be determined to be true, and in the meantime could be seen as misinformation. Yes there can be harm caused by false statements, but taking those voices away instead of countering arguments with dialogue is way more of a slippery slope. I understand private businesses can act how they like and protected speech in America only applied to government and not businesses, but social media has become essential the way in which thoughts and expressions are now shared and this is dangerous to moderate (other than as mentioned for examples of harassment). Although the terms on hate speech and harassment etc will need to be defined, at least without having to worry about shareholders then they can concentrate on these issues without any politics involved. Or at least this is my hope! I may be proven wrong.
And as soon as all the terms on hate speech and harassment in every country are addressed we will land not far from where we are right now with Twitter.

Will be funny when all the fake news and hatred floods in, and the EU and UK's new laws kick in, and they're faced with moderating the lies and hate away again...
