Steve came up with some great tools, for sure, but IMO that tech path was already laid. SJ surely rushed it and also made it sexy and marketable. Musk makes tools too and the same could be said of him ushering in tech whose path was already laid. I would say Musks tools are much more impactful and less visible whereas SJ's tools are relatively simple but very visable and widely used by many people.
I cant say that yet because he is pushing car culture.. It would make more sense to make public transportation a truly reliable and viable option in the bigger cities. Id be impressed with that. The truth is most times people dont actually need a car but they default to is because mass transit is terrible everywhere in the US except NYC.

Battery technology is great but look where its going and all of these companies are trying to improve battery technology for their products. Apple was instrumental in improving battery tech in the computer world. Musk is just feeding off of the groundwork of prior tech companies including Apple. Space travel.... Hmmm that hasnt panned out yet. So... Sorry Steve >>>> Musk.

Musk is creating Electronic Payment, Rockets and Electric Vehicles. Jobs created Computers, Music Player and Phones.

Not in the same league (in terms of engineering). Both are great.
Electronic payment really? Throwing up a website that you put your card information into isnt interesting. Many players were doing that since the early days of the internet not just musk. Android Pay and Apple pay already exist. Using biometric data in the payment processing and validation space is much more sophisticated approach and you can use it in real life.

Musk is just piggy backing off of Apple inventions and not all of his inventions are completely realistic for the time period. Electronic vehicles have existed since the late 90's. Secondly the electronic vehicles musk is creating arent even within the grasp of what most people can afford. If im not mistaken there isnt really even a legitimate business around tesla motors as they are losing money last I checked...just a bunch of stupid investors throwing money around willy nilly.

Elon Musk has a rare type of charisma that sucks in otherwise very intelligent people. He has the magic that paves the way for him to look smarter than he is. Able to sell his ideas wherever and to whomever he wants, he's received far more credit and praise that he might if only people knew the truth behind the veneer.

Those who have questioned his projects have been squashed like bugs. He is so revered and worshipped that it's as though he can do no wrong. I watched in amazement as he was given billions of dollars of taxpayer money funneled indirectly through golfer boy. Then even worse many people actually believe the story that's he's paid it back.

Here's what one true Auto Industry Expert thinks.

Basically trying to be the Apple of the car industry without the infrastructure and a solid product. Cars arent smart devices and laptops.

Two-thirds of All Tesla S Drivetrains Replaced By 60K Miles

"Breitbart News reported in October, with Tesla’s stock plunging by -10 percent, that Consumer Reports had pulled its “best car ever” rating from Tesla’s Model S. Having received 1,400 responses from owners over the following month, who complained about a litany of squeaks, rattles, and multiple electric motor replacements, Consumer Reports (CR) pulled Tesla’s perfect 100-point score and revised the score for the new $127,820 Model S to a “worse than average” 43.

Tesla Motors on November 20 began a voluntary worldwide recall to inspect every one of the 90,000 Model S cars the company has built. Although the company claims that the motivation was seat belt safety problems, Breitbart News had already been reporting that Tesla’s unsustainable drivetrain had been known to insiders and owners for a long time.

Those fears seem to have been confirmed with the release of a Plug-In America study that out of 327 Model S cars analyzed, as many as two-thirds have had their drivetrains replaced before the car mileage hit 60,000, according to Green Car Reports."

I like Elon Musk, but I dislike our society's tendency to worship people like him and Steve Jobs. They are businessmen, brilliant businessmen to be sure, but don't ever think for one second that these people wouldn't rip your throat out to increase their profit margin a few percentage points. Business at the Fortune 500 level is an eat-or-be-eaten world and it takes a special type of sociopath to thrive in that environment.
Both these two aren't out for grabbing profits. Apple does that now and its products and software suffers.

Steve did great things in consumer electronics. Elon is spending billions of his own money and revolutionizing space travel. In the long run, Elon will have a greater impact on humanity.

Elon is a fraud. Even Tesla Motors doesn't deliver on its hype, rather it produces years-delayed vaporware.

How about SpaceX?

Granted Musk likes to be overly optimistic on his timelines for SpaceX as well, but they are hitting their stride right now and Falcon Heavy will hopefully first launch tomorrow.

I don't mind the idea of a privatized space program (that is out of the hands of government and NASA), but I won't comment on any of them since it's too early to tell if any of them will be a long term success. There are several, including Branson's Virgin.
