Also with this Problem

Just to add a little to this thread. I also have an eMac with this problem. Luckily I had already heard about the problem before this happened to my eMac. I didn't buy AppleCare (regretfully) so when I called up Apple I explained that I was being affected by this known issue and asked what he thought I should do about it. He did indeed confirm that my issue was related to AppleCare Document: 95169. Now I knew that he couldn't fully support me and I didn't expect him to. He told me that it would be best to go ahead and take my computer to my local Apple Store and have them take a look at it to decide what needed to be done.

So I called my Apple Store (WillowBend in Dallas, TX if you care) and when I spoke to a "Mac Genius" about it, I was told that there was no known issue with eMacs. I probed a little further and pointed out AppleCare Document: 95169, but they would hear none of it. By this time he was a little miffed at me so he said to bring it in so that they could take a look at it so that he could get me off the phone.

I haven't taken it in yet because if they have to replace it I need to do some backing up first. Of course I can't agree with the statement that all eMacs are defective but it seems that many are. Maybe too many. . .

Also you have to remember that when you call Technical Support, you aren't really talking to Apple as a whole, just one tech who works there and you might just get a different answer each time you call depending on that persons mood and/or experience. Everyone who has worked at any large support company will agree.

But if you're really worried about it and if it's an option, skip all the talking on the phone and talking to CompUSA and go directly to an Apple Store and show them. I've had to replace 2 iPods and all I had to do was show them the issue in person and it was replaced on the spot without any more questions. In fact to quote the Mac Genius at my local store, "Yup, it's broken, hold on a sec, I'll get you another one."

And "******" originally had no negative connotation, but if i called one of my black friends or neighbors that, i'd get my ass kicked.

I think, from now on, since Jew also means "cheap or thrifty", i'll wander around for the next week using it in that context. I'm going to wal-mart tonight, i should just stop people and tell them what a jew i am for shopping there. And if i actually find a Jewish person, i'll just tell them "geez, chill out - the name of your minority group has two meanings, one just happens to be very negative".

don't try to justify bigotry. gay has had one meaning in most countries for the last 40 or more years.

davy the bunny: Hope things go well at the genius bar, they can be a bit rigid but you sound like you've dealt with them before :) i have to wonder if they didn't try to cut costs using somewhat poor-performing hardware... it sounds like that rather than a design flaw, as some other issues have been...

Gay, generally when used in that context means stupid. Like if I said, "this is one arab thread", nobody would know what the hell I was talking about. But if I say, "this is one gay thread", you would all know what I was talking about. (P.S. I'm not racist agains arabs, they were just an example)

lol at that pic with gary colman. *saves funny image*

and when I first saw it, I knew it meant gay as in stupid so calm down everyone

It was originally used as a personal slander, like "that guy is so gay" meaning you're inferring that he's not the stereotype of a heterosexual male. To call someone gay meant that you were insulting them by challenging their masculinity. Inferring homosexuality, as if it's a personal flaw. It then later adapted to use as a slander against things in general, but it does still derive from a slander against a group of people.

Trust me on this one. i have a deep personal interest in the origin of that phrase-- and it's something that's been studied thoroughly. Even if you didn't "mean" it like that, it's still an insult to minorities.

"gay" as in homosexual and "gay" as in stupid are not at all separate meanings. Whether you know it or not.

If you want to be homophobic that's fine, but at least take responsibility when you use a homophobic phrase.

Paul is correct... saying something is gay is insinuating that it is abnormal. You might not have meant it this way but it will be taken that way by most people...and it will certainly be taken as an offense by a gay person.

i'm with paul on this one.
I don't suppose it's particularly nice if the word that describes what you are is also the word other people use for stupid.
think about it.
it's all about respect

just a warning.

i am a first time and last time mac user.
i bought my eMac 4 weeks ago, and it is broken. the display pulsates and vibrates, and the geometery is warped.
i took it in too be repaired, the techincan said he could not repair it. he said, when he spoke to apple tech support they said ALL eMacs are defective!
Seems odd that out of ALL of the eMacs in existence that mine is the only one isn't defective.

Hey Paul......

Beleive it or not I have quite a few gay friends..as well as lesbian ones (I like them especially).

Anyway....the more credence you give to that word having anything to do with biggotry the more the problem continues. I use the term "gay" around them all the time , they understand...hell they use it from time to time. Its not the word it the meaning behind it. It has no reference to me in the form of a put down to the homosexual community. No one I know uses it in that way. Its just the way it is around my neighborhood. Im sorry you live in such an uptight area of the planet.....

If I have offended anyone I truly apologize. It was never meant to be a put down to anyone. (Except maybe the person who started this thread :) ) Im just not used to that word being deragatory......I am truly sorry...

when i first got my 15" imac back in march of 2002, i could not burn dvds at all. i could burn cds just fine but not dvds. I was on the phone for numerous hours trying to solve it and did many many many many thigns but nothing worked. I took it to the apple store, and they were just as dumbfounded. They kept it and could not figure out what the heck was wrong with it. So they just sent for a replacement drive and there we go, good as new. Well actually better than new, cause it didnt work when it was new lol.

But thanks to AppleCare I was not $600 poorer.

What a great idea.

My eMac works great!

I've been using an eMac everyday since the 1st week of September. I've never had any problems and so far it is the best Mac that I've owned. I've been completely satisfied with the product.

@ this whole thread...

Dont get too cocky with that XP machine. If you change internal configurrations too many times your computer will lock for attempted piracy and you will have too call microsoft and convince them to give you an unlock code

"i could lie, but the truth i far too much fun"

call apple. like right now. pretty sure that they'll probably fix and/or replace it for you and it'll be no big deal. *ALL* computers break so you really can't blame apple.

just don't go into an apple store. sometimes the "geniuses" don't know anything.

And maybe you should think about the applecare protection plan because it's priced reasonably cheap for three entire years of great tech support from Apple.

It's a tough one, this. I see both points of view. Some people object to certain words which describe them being used as derogatory; whereas others believe the best way to remove the derogatory connotation is to use the word lots.
I personally don't know what is best.
Except use discretion when you don't know the people that well. Friends - ok.
People you don't know - probably don't push it (unless pushing it is your thing!)

Oh, DeadlyBreakfast, did you *actually* use the line "I have quite a few gay friends"? Please....;)

Macette, maluscanis, and bondipete, thank you for your support. I do apologize if i came off a bit harsh, it's just that, as i said, this is an issue very close to my heart. I came out in high school, in a conservative town that's not the best place to come out. And i've spoken to many, many other people with similar experiences. one of the things that's *always* remarked about is the other kids use of the word "gay" as a slur... it can be offensive, and downright threatening to a point, because you don't know if they're making any distinction, or if they really hate gay people enough to use the word in other cases where they "hate" something. it's impossible to know how people will react to one's coming out, but this always seems like an indicator that they won't take it well- and it's surprisingly accurate, those most opposed to me after my coming out were those that used the word a great deal. I had one teacher that forbade the use of the word in his classroom, after he found out about me, and i was immeasurably thankful for that... but for the most part, it was still acceptable. i even heard a teacher use it at one point.

my HS principal and i are actually drawing up plans to write a book on the subject, case histories of people's coming out experiences in HS, and how other's actions affected them. i'd imagine there will be a whole section devoted to this in particular.

that your friends are callous enough to not be offended is great, for the most part gay people do not take the subject so lightly. i just want you to realize that 1 in 10 people may be *extremely* offended by the word's misuse. You'd be surprised at how many people you know that are still closeted, and wince inside every time they hear it. it can be more hurtful than you realize. sometimes that has to be pointed out.

Macette...I dont feel I have the right....no one does.If you have read any of my posts you could have and should have realized that I couldnt care less what the heck anyone's sexual prefrence is..It doesn't effect my life in any way shape or form...

Homophobic I am not....Paul....Like I said if I offended you I apologize...I was merely trying to poke fun at the original poster.

There were certainly some proplems with the early eMacs - specifically magnetic interferrence from the speakers affecting the disply, this has now been rectified though (we took delivery of 50 a few weeks back, and five had monitor distortions, all were confirmed to have been original revision ones)

We've had a lot of trouble with the eMacs in general though - they aren't exactly reliable - we've had to send five other back for repairs on top of the five that were replaced.
