Also with this Problem
Just to add a little to this thread. I also have an eMac with this problem. Luckily I had already heard about the problem before this happened to my eMac. I didn't buy AppleCare (regretfully) so when I called up Apple I explained that I was being affected by this known issue and asked what he thought I should do about it. He did indeed confirm that my issue was related to
AppleCare Document: 95169. Now I knew that he couldn't fully support me and I didn't expect him to. He told me that it would be best to go ahead and take my computer to my local Apple Store and have them take a look at it to decide what needed to be done.
So I called my Apple Store (WillowBend in Dallas, TX if you care) and when I spoke to a "Mac Genius" about it, I was told that there was no known issue with eMacs. I probed a little further and pointed out
AppleCare Document: 95169, but they would hear none of it. By this time he was a little miffed at me so he said to bring it in so that they could take a look at it so that he could get me off the phone.
I haven't taken it in yet because if they have to replace it I need to do some backing up first. Of course I can't agree with the statement that all eMacs are defective but it seems that many are. Maybe too many. . .
Also you have to remember that when you call Technical Support, you aren't really talking to Apple as a whole, just one tech who works there and you might just get a different answer each time you call depending on that persons mood and/or experience. Everyone who has worked at any large support company will agree.
But if you're really worried about it and if it's an option, skip all the talking on the phone and talking to CompUSA and go directly to an Apple Store and show them. I've had to replace 2 iPods and all I had to do was show them the issue in person and it was replaced on the spot without any more questions. In fact to quote the Mac Genius at my local store, "Yup, it's broken, hold on a sec, I'll get you another one."
