They'll service but aren't under any obligation to repair accidental damage or damage caused by abuse/misuse under warranty. Typically repairs due to user-caused damage tend to be rather costly, but you may luck out if there is no obvious physical damage.

Alright that's good enough.

What is an "accident?" Also what is misuse?

I don't understand what they will cover.

Warranties are to cover when a product fails due to a defect in the item itself. Either the part was manufactured badly, or the assembly was bad for some reason. For example, Apple has even extended warranties beyond the default to cover specific known manufacturing or part defects - like bad video chips, or prone-to-failure chassis.

Warranties are *NOT* meant to cover "loss due to non-manufacturing defect." That is what insurance is for. Warranties do not cover theft, warranties do not cover damage from accidents (dropping your phone in a puddle,) warranties do not cover intentional abuse (throwing your laptop.)

A good example is a car - if you crash your Mustang in to a tree, you don't expect Ford to cover it, you expect your insurance company to cover it.

And, since someone's got to say it - attempting to get a company to cover something under warranty that was due to a non-warranty act could constitute contract fraud. (I am not a lawyer, consult one before making decisions based on that statement, etc, etc.) Now, is Apple likely to try to have you arrested for attempting to get this covered by warranty? Of course not. But they *CAN* refuse service, and if they do, you have no right to reverse their decision (so don't come complaining here if they don't.)

So I visited the Apple Store today, albeit a few minutes late. I noticed one of my friends got a job there!

The genius at the counter ran a diagnostic test on my laptop and after opening Disk Utility determined a new logic board and SSD would be needed. So soon I'll have to go back and get that.

My advice to anyone is to get AppleCare because it looks as though it really came through for me today.

What's Applecare got to do with it? If it was a 2014 rMBP it was still covered by the standard 12 month warranty.

AppleCare wouldn't cover damage you caused; it only extends the original warranty from 1 year to 3.

UPDATE: Got a call from an Apple Store employee who said that the SSD was loose, so they need to replace the logic board. Now we know why it was loose obviously but what I didn't know was there was a dent that resulted, even with a Speck case!

I was in yesterday, and the woman at the Genius Bar must've told the employee I was on the phone with today that I had a case on it and told the manager who said that's okay. I guess it's a Christmas miracle...

Not so much a miracle as a slip up by the Genius that checked-in in your computer. It is his/her job to thoroughly go over the machine before they take it to 1) See if there is any damage that might be attributable to the problem. 2) Ensure that Apple isn't liable for any existing damage. Part of the paperwork you signed lists any existing damage and states you acknowledge it.

If the damage wasn't acknowledged by you, you could easily claim Apple damaged the computer while under repair and they would be liable.

I've done my time behind the bar and seen my fair share of ungrateful and dishonest people blow up about the tiniest of scratches and blemishes missed on check-in... The miracle for that store and Genius team is that you are an honest guy that is grateful his computer is being repaired free of charge.

Wow, that's interesting. When I sign contracts I don't typically look at the legal aspects, I just rush through them. Now the damage most likely resulted from the incident, but it's not crazy to think that something may have happened after I left the store; but I doubt it. And yes if I was a hot-headed guy who didn't care about honesty perhaps I would've tried to siphon money from the store.

From his response to this post, I would guess that this kid is either truly clueless and not picking up on your sarcasm or is definitely clued-in and carefully not responding directly to your sarcasm......or is responding to it in his own weird little way. IMHO the bottom line here is that Apple should not be picking up the costs for repairing the damage this hotheaded little kid did to his MBP during a fit of anger over the results of some silly sports game..... Mommy and Daddy better be more careful, too, in the future, about giving this little boy expensive items that he can break. Maybe when he grows up he can once again have nice things.......

You don't care about honesty - else you would have told them what happened.

I will note for the record that plenty of contributors to this thread led this entitled little brat down the wrong path earlier on. However, his dishonest character is simply a result of a rotten upbringing.

Let's hope this lying, cheating, stealing kid never gets elected to congress. Or dogcatcher.

How severe was the dent. I'm surprised it needs a new logic board and SSD from a dent which doesn't appear to be too severe. Was the logic board itself damaged (dent in case does not automatically translate to internal damage). It almost seems as if re-seating the SSD should be enough.

Next time he should just throw a beer can onto the floor like normal people do when they're upset at the results of a football game. Soda can if he's not old enough to drink beer.
