If you’re going to go on an “adventure”, ensure that you have a coherent plan to avoid or get yourself out of foreseeable problems, preferably one which doesn’t involve wasting the emergency services time and resources.

No no no. You must understand.... it's no longer considered an adventure if you have a plan! 🤣

I am always at odds with articles like this.

We all like a story with a happy ending and saving one life or 3 is great

However

Using for PR I find is distasteful if Apple were like Volvo and gifted life saving ideas to the world I'm onboard with that measure of Kudos

We also must remember that 100.000's of serious injuries and deaths are caused by using mobile tech just in the USA

The very irony of life saving features in phones were required in some circumstances because of using the device in the 1st instance should not go amiss

Whilst we can't stop stupid and we have all had to dodge someone in a mall who's walking and talking/texting all OEM's can do better IMO and not just line their pockets

Exactly what PR do you imagine here?

And since Android manufacturers are always quick to copy Apple features, in effect Apple is gifting it to all smartphone users.

Was referring to Apple typically showcasing lives saved as PR

Still I see you would rather comment on age old topics of who's copying who opposed to encouraging OEMS to share details on saving lives

Ooh the arm chair, finger-wagging, Boy Scouting is strong in this thread. Fact is, none of us were there. So to start labeling these kids “idiots” is… Idiotic.

Sure, prep is important (victory favors the prepared) but even Eagle Scouts can get in over their head. **** happens. One of the most important skills, not only in something like canyoneering, but in life, is the ability to function when things go off-script. Because life is way less scripted than some may want to make it or believe.

It sounds like they had a year of canyoneering under their belts. They were heading to a specific location. They had gear; at least some rope and carabiners, materials (and skill) to make a fire, thermal blankets and - oh yeah - an SOS-capable phone. They found themselves in a situation and, with their gear, experience and maybe some good ol’ luck, they’ll live to fight another day. Sounds like THE definition of adventure., to me.

I do wonder what Apple will charge for the feature. Part of some Ultra subscription? On a per-use basis? Interested to find out.

To all those criticising the boys, they
1) researched the 'The Squeeze' extensively before they did it.
2) Just because you can go down, it doesn’t mean you can go back up.

Here are some pictures of the Squeeze to gain some perspective.

It just be lovely to be able to judge people by reading the headlines. Why don’t people need facts before judging others?

Smart guys to use this feature and get themselves out of this predicament.

What are you talking about Apple PR? Are you implying Apple is to blame for sensationalizing this story? Did you even read the article? The news was reported by AppleInsider (another Apple fansite) and also by KUTV, a Utah-based news station. Apple Inc had nothing to do with this story. No one at Apple was even interviewed or asked to comment about this event.

The only thing that involved Apple is their built-in iPhone satellite SOS feature that helped get those kids out of danger.

But keep on trying to blame Apple for everything, ok?

They got stuck for the first time in the pool and yet chose to continue on. It is questionable whether they should be saved. I am glad that every rescuer is safe however. I can stress the importance of outdoor adventuring safety. You are ultimately responsible for your personal safety. How many times a rescuer lose their life trying to save somebody because how irresponsibly the "adventurers" put themself at dangerous locations. I am worried that people with such satellite emergency services would become even less self conscious as they expect to be rescued anyway. Well one can argue that when cell phones were first invented people became less responsible because they can call for help. Which isn't the case now because a phone call has become a basic need.

Sounds like a well written story to promote Apple. Did they have to pay for the rescue?
