Why do people think this is stupid? I think it has less to do with political correctness and more to do with increased customizability. Nothing to see here. It will be released next year and then everyone will forget about and I'm sure plenty will use it. Quit your whining.

Exhibit A for why people who want everything to be politically correct are ruining everything.

Some people think it's stupid because they believe only white people should be represented in the world.

We call those people "racist".

The best part is that they don't know it.

lol @ all the white people complaining.

Why would you assume it's white people that are complaining? It's not a white emoticon that's being expanded upon. It's YELLOW. As in, straight up yellow, nowhere even close to a tone of skin that you'd see on earth.

Can't believe so many people here don't like this.

Customizable emoji is a good thing, right? I mean, how can it be a bad thing???

Sure this *seems* trivial because it's "just" emoji, but it's not so hard to imagine a kid somewhere else in the world feeling a little $hi**y because people who have his skin type (and that of everyone in his community) are not represented. Who does it hurt, exactly, to make it feel more inclusive to others?

That’s a nice fallacy you have there.

I think some people, like me, would rather not have this issue at all. Emojis depicting people are typically just expressive to convey certain emotions. They shouldn’t even have a skin tone to begin with. There is nothing wrong with the generic smileys, because they don’t favour any human skin tone and leave the entire issue open. Once you start incorporating skin tones, you’re opening a can of worms.

Yellow emoticon = white? Um...okay.

So, MR, will you expand your emoticon library or will blue people continue to have disproportional representation?

lol @ sensitive whites defending their racism.

BTW it's not a yellow emoticon. The character color itself isn't defined in the Unicode spec, and is left to interpretation by the creator of the actual emoji.

That’s a nice fallacy you have there.

You'll get over it.

This seems extremely racist to me, actually. This means that people will now be forced to actually consciously think about race when picking emojis to send. What kind of loaded message could be unintentionally sent? What kind of loaded message could be intentionally sent?

As someone else mentioned, emojis are supposed to be conveying emotions (thus the start of the word being "emo"). Is "African happy" an emotion? Does it differ from "European happy"?

Maybe it's necessary like this :D

Seriously??? There are people who actually thought this up??

Amazing numbers of people spend time and money dreaming up solutions to non-existent problems. This is but one example.

 <--- Using this emoticon has made me sad here, because it does not properly represent my racial heritage.

Additionally, many of the Unicode characters physically show people, not just smiley faces.

Those characters aren't yellow, and the new spec is designed to indicate skin color.

I guess the yellow ones are consider white?...wait...!?

I want equal billing. I want white ones. Or I am starting an American Association of White Emojis "AAWE"

There are beige (caucasian-toned) ones in the new proposal.

Yeah, I really need a white faced emoji because I'm tired of using the yellow ones and having everyone think I'm Asian.....

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!....

Honestly, this is freaking ridiculous. They are little cartoon faces. They don't look like ANYBODY. Geez!

And neither of them looks like normal white man skin color...
I don't need pink emoji...
