good news for those that do not want to jailbreak their iPhones....

well, sorta....

I didn't want to JB either, but I did to get the emoji, so I did the jail break to get them. However, they remain after a full factory restore and then a restore from backup.

I assume since the installer and cydia apps are no longer there, it is no longer JB'ed.

someone correct me if I am wrong.....

i'm really surprised people are JB'ing just to get emoji :p i would have thought like themes, camcorder or bosspref would have convinced people :p

Same here.. I might grab the emoji's for fun, but it's low on my list of reasons to jailbreak :)

i got it enabled on mine (thanks for the heads up OP). what i'm curious is there even a large chunk of phones in the USA that can actually view emoji? what about Europe?

Yes, because

a) without JB you wont be able to establish a SSH connection and edit the file on the device
b) without JB you won't have Cydia installed to activate it this way.

Thanks, I don't want to JB though. I did find the Backup extractor but couldn't save back to the backup. I'm sure there is a way though. Anyone know of an iTunes Backup editor?

Just a thought....is there any way to use xcode to edit the iphone backup files? Seems like you should be able to do what we need to do with the iphone sdk of all things.

What is the reason why you don't want to JB?

Not sure I want to install files on my iphone that aren't checked over by Apple to make sure they don't have any problems, unknown consequences, or nefarious coding. Also don't want my iphone to be sluggish or have to worry about the security of my files on it

Living outside of the box is not for everyone.

I had a first gen iphone that i jailbroke, and experienced lag, crashes, and some other weird stuff. I also started seeing data activity on my account, at times that I knew I wasn't doing anything. Kinda made me start wondering about the source and intent of all the 3rd party stuff I'd placed on my phone and given root access.

Exactly why I am asking for a set of instructions to enable the emoji without jailbreaking my 3g iphone.

they should enable this on all networks and all phones.....

can you imagine using IM without emoticons...
Same thing with sms...especially with the Iphone's sms system, it's like one never ending chat session......keeps going and going and goooiiinn,,,,

I needs smileys dammit!
