Waze does, but I've found it to be incorrect too many times.

Why not just route everywhere? That has saved me so many times when there is unexpected traffic/accidents or road closures I was unaware of. I route everywhere with volume/annoucements set to "alerts only" so I'm not getting turn-by-turn all the time....since I know where I'm going.

Exactly what I do. Saved me countless hours offering me "weird" routes taking me around traffic and accidents

Good idea, I might have to do that.. I checked the Waze app, and honestly the animations in Apple Maps are miles ahead.. plus Waze looks cartoony.

I feel like this solution of always setting destination isn't as practical as Apple simply allowing an always on option.

I agree on the look of Waze, i tried it for a while and found the routing a bit weird at times plus i couldnt get on with the look. I've now settled on using Apple Maps all the time via CarPlay on both our cars as generally a mixture of whats in my calendar, regular locations and saved favourites its a one or two buttons pressed to quickly set a route going. I then utilise the crowd sourced reporting of incidents, speed checks etc by having Waze running in the background and it alerts come through when there is something.

Hi guys.

For some unknown, illogical reason Apple has only enabled the speed limit display while navigating to a destination, and doesn't display it when just driving around.

Does anyone know of a Carplay maps app which displays it at all times?

Thanks

Waze has this feature... and my granddaughter is quick to notice when my actual speed is displayed in red (exceeding the limit by > 5 mph)... but the actual posted speed limit is available as an 'always on' option.

I've seen a few discrepancies between what Waze reports and the actual posted speed limit, but it's usually in "conditional" situations - like a street having a 40 MPH limit, but it's reduced to 30 MPH while school is in session, or temporary school zones (speed limit reduced to 15 MPH instead of usual speed limit).

Waze shows it for sure, I never really pay attention to that though. I hate Apple maps for the simple fact that as soon as you open it in car play it is trying to route you somewhere, and takes so many taps just to clear it to simply have a map open. I generally leave Waze open or sometimes Google Maps with satellite view. Apple Maps is the most annoying of the 3. I like the simplicity of Waze from a visual standpoint, I find Google and Apple are trying to do a bit more then might really be needed.

Fairly sure if you just leave the screen and press nothing the screen clears itself after a short while and just shows the map.

I will check that out next time I take the car. I remember having it open for a bit and it did not change, I would not have waited that long. It is an annoying thing to force immediately. Would much prefer to follow Google in this and just display the map, if I want to route I will do what I need to do to get a route. Apple's version is cumbersome and anything but sleek in operation.

Or turn off siri suggestions for Maps... ;)

....and Waze offers that because they have to have you running it for them to get their data. Apple wants to, as usual, provide a cleaner interface and only show what is important. If you aren't routing, you shouldn't be looking at the screen, you should be watching the road and actually see the speed limit signs. (I know that's an oversimplification, but work with me here....) ;)

You see the flip side of that is that i really like the offering of location suggestions. I generally have stuff in my calendar so between that, frequent locations and saved favourites its just one\two presses to start my navigation and i'm good to go instead of messing about searching for things etc.

Our newer car, an electric Vauxhall Corsa, has some fancy camera that reads the speed signs for me and puts them on the dash...thats handy.

What do you need to search for? It can all be done with voice. For Google maps it is 2 taps and you are verbal and giving directions. With Apple you have to start out by tapping buttons just to clear the screen if you don't want it. Siri should make this even simpler and completely hands free without a single tap of the screen needed, unlike Google. "Hey Siri, give me directions to...". I don't need suggestions on how to get somewhere when it is my daily drive. This morning I tested to see if the suggestion would go away and after driving 5 mins it did not clear and kept asking showing me what it thought I wanted to do, drive to work. Now I did and was driving to work, but as this is a regular commute I don't need directions. Seems to me route suggestions is a bit redundant if they are places you are going on a regular basis that Apple remembers them. Ultimately though each to their own, if it works for you great! For me, I find it to just be in the way and distracting to simply have a map.

Set notifications on the main screen by tapping it to bring up the volume options and pick "alerts only"...you then get the best of both worlds; you get routing you say you don't need, but if there is a speed trap, hazard, accident, change of route, etc. it will notify you of that without giving you turn-by-turn directions for your entire commute.

It's my default setting day-to-day and I only change to "normal" volume setting when I am traveling on a road trip or when I have no clue where I am going.

The way i do it i dont have to search or speak at all....it pretty much always brings up the location i need as its got it in my calendar, frequent locations or saved favourites. Just accept and away you go. I do the same commute to work every day monday to friday but i always have directions running. I know where i am going but that way i can be alerted to any issues on my route, more than once its diverted me around incidents or traffic build ups and saved me time. You wouldnt get that without directions running.

Like the poster who replied previously i have spoken instructions off bar alerts to make me aware of things and maybe turn them on if i feel i need the turn by turn spoken bits for a bit of extra help in an area i'm not sure about.

Or I just use Waze and it has it all with no need to touch anything while getting speed camera, police, construction, etc and all there just by opening it up. For me Apple Maps is the worst, others mileage will differ of course. Thankfully we have options.

I cannot disagree with anything you said.

Even Waze won't re-route you if you don't have a route selected.

Apple Maps shows construction whether routing or not.

I used to have Waze opened in the background while routing with Apple Maps just to hear the alert, but now that Maps has them, no need for Waze. And my personal opinion, Waze is ugly...Apple wins hands down from a visual standpoint over ANY other map app.

Waze shows construction as well, though I am guessing that is depending on people marking that info in. Seems pretty consistent and accurate where I am.

I do think Apple Maps looks slick and visually better, I think for just looking at a map though again Waze is simpler and easier to read quickly. It might be the colours Apple is using, I am not sure, but again find Waze at a quick glance is much easier to discern. I have a large centre screen on my Subaru Outback so size of the display is not an issue here. image is from google but that is my display.

Totally. But I usually always have AM up in case of detours or a blocked route. I also wish AM would show your speed too like others so you can quick glance to see them together

Part of my route between home and work is annoying like that. Can't they somehow make it change based on day of the week and time?

Just wish AM rerouted better. Waze is the only one that ever reroutes me to avoid slow routes. AM will just let me drive into 10mph highway traffic. What's even worse is when it reroutes when I already passed the exit before the start of the jam.
