Speed limit data is from a service not inherent to the map data. The service is the most accurate when path data is used.

Getting the speed limit based of individual road segments from a vehicle that isn't snapped to a route can be spotty at best. Any latency in the service makes it that much worse.

A lot of navigation apps will take the better safe than sorry approach and just not display the speed limit in this case.

How come internal car GPS' can do this fine?
My BMW has a speed limit display at all times, but the maps and navigation is outdated, and doesn't let you update without a huge fee. Hence, the Carplay :)

My BMW Nav on my motorcycle will only display the speed limit when on a route, the data is downloaded though and part of the map set itself with all its POI's. Thankfully Garmin makes my BMW Nav so map updates are free for life.

Fairly sure if you just leave the screen and press nothing the screen clears itself after a short while and just shows the map.
Never turns off for me. My commute from home/work is about 3.5 miles and takes around 15 min.

I hate Apple maps for the simple fact that as soon as you open it in car play it is trying to route you somewhere, and takes so many taps just to clear it to simply have a map open.
This right here. So annoying. Also that CarPlay doesn't remember when you set 3d view on maps.

Sigh...turn off suggestions if you don't want them...yes, it does default to 3D if you select that in Maps settings...

Waze shows it for sure, I never really pay attention to that though. I generally leave Waze open or sometimes Google Maps with satellite view. Apple Maps is the most annoying of the 3. I like the simplicity of Waze from a visual standpoint, I find Google and Apple are trying to do a bit more then might really be needed.
The best one was when Maps would instantly suggest Home when I ended my route to work, and I like 'I wish'

I think i corrected myself that it takes one press to clear the suggested destination and then the screen will clear of other options shortly after, it doesnt take numerous presses as others mentioned. Its also been said turning off suggestions stops it happening completely.

I will check that out next time I take the car. I remember having it open for a bit and it did not change, I would not have waited that long. It is an annoying thing to force immediately. Would much prefer to follow Google in this and just display the map, if I want to route I will do what I need to do to get a route. Apple's version is cumbersome and anything but sleek in operation.
I find Google Maps always suggests a destination from my recent search, and persists offering it even after I have driven there!

So when you open Google Maps in your car it comes up with a suggestion? That is opposite of what I get and I have not played around with settings, only thing I adjust is to Sat view maps

Yep, it’s really annoying as 99% of the time it is not where I want to go.
weird! That is what I get with Apple maps and why I find Apple maps annoying. I want it to just open up a map and not ask me to do anything till I ask it to do something.

Settings -> Maps -> Siri & Search -> Suggestions...click off "Show in App" and "Show on Home Screen" at a minimum.
