i HATE ps3 updates

if i dont play it for a while i have to
1) do a freaking system upgrade
2) do a freaking game update

it will take me a good 15-20 min before i can actually start playing

usually i lose my interest and just do the updates and then turn it off again only to repeat the cycle

I feel the same way about the PS3.

WYeah, but I find the 360 games update in a few seconds. As much as I love my PS3, updates of any kind are ***** painfully slow. The worst was installing the WoW demo... God it updated so many times....

I find the 360 to be exactly the same. I don't use mine much (in contrast to the PS3), and I generally have a stack of updates to install.

As for how long each update takes to install? Depends on the game, and what the update is. Cross-platform updates are the same size generally, and take the same time on both systems.

Also, WoW on PS3? First I've heard of that...

I'm not so sure about that. When I got my 360 in the summer I played about 20 or so games from my brothers collection, most needed updates but they were tiny and even on my 700kb connection sent from a distant router the updates were very quick. No more than 15-30 seconds. Using the same connection from the same distance the multiplatform games I tried (AC, Bioshock, Fallout 3) took a lot longer to patch on the PS3. The whole thing took so long that I just sat back playing a DS instead.

Thing is (360/PS3/PC) devs do gloss over the QA and testing now because they can. Once upon a time Japan+America were large QA testing grounds and European games were usually the most bug free. Since L4D2 came out I've had to download about 6 updates for that, but on Steam they're always very small too and don't take more than a minute.

Well the 360 only updates twice a year generally, and any smaller updates are literally under 10 seconds. Games update more frequently, but even still, updating on the games is much slower.

And WoW was on my PC, not the PS3 :p gremmer for teh win

a console better last more than 4 years imo

I still have my Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, N64, and PS2, all of which work perfectly.
The only reason i havent bought a 360 for myself yet is because i dont want to buy another one in 3 years. I'll probably grab one when they are dirt cheap right before the launch of the 720 or whatever.

You should have known better than to buy a Microsoft product. When was the last time they made good hardware? Ermm... Never.

I had no issues with the Xbox, and the more recent X360 have been quite good. And the Zune and Zune HD never had any hardware issues. And their mice/keyboards are always reviewed well(I'm not a fan, but I've give credit where credit is due)

Is really just the launch/early X360 which were bad

Pretty much all MS hardware is great except the 360. Its just a reliability nightmare. Not just the earlier ones either, the revised motherboards (i forget what they are called. the Falcon mobo? idk) still act up despite MS saying they fixed the problem. MS doesnt have to fix the problem, they have a bunch of loyal fans that are willing to re-purchase every 3 years. Thats good perpetual sales for MS.

So Apple is not the only company with brand loyalty? That's crazy talk!:D

I think when you consider the price of the entry level Xbox now (and I assume the compatibility with add-on hardware from version to version), it doesn't surprise me that somebody will gladly fork over $200 every three to four years to replace their gaming console. That's less than the cost of four new games!

Considering how quickly technology moves, some people (including many on this website) will replace their more expensive items (cameras/computers/TVs/cars/etc.) with even greater frequency. The only area where this argument tends to break down is that I presume those items are still working and are being voluntarily replaced...

I was jsut gonna say this is a forum filled to the brim with people who buy any and every new apple product that comes about, yet fans of MS (myself included) who choose to replace a system after 3/4 years of enjoyment are considered in the wrong for supporting a system that breaks.

To others who cite their older game consoles still working. Of course, cartridge systems are still going strong, there was a lot less to worry about. Video games in today's world are above and beyond anything that we played Mario on. I expect problems when dealing with something as in depth as an Xbox 360 or PS3. Just my opinion, though.

It finally happened...

My 2005 launch xbox 360 FINALLY died on me. Half way through a game of MW2, boom, frozen screen. Red rings.

Ugh.

Good thing I have a spare system (lulz)

Manufactured 10-18-2005

*sigh* damn you MS.

Thats terrible. My only gaming system is a PS2 i bought new when they first came out in 2000. And I'm still gaming on it.

^^ I have my launch ps2 in my living room just to play Guitar Hero 1 and 2. Its still going strong after all these years. I had a ps1 i sold about 2 years ago, it ran perfect like it was brand new. Nintendo's consoles are known to be damn near invincible too, i've only heard one person say their wii died.

The difference is that if you go out an buy a new MBP every time its updated it is because you chose to and you are getting more out of it. On the other hand people are re-buying a 360 because they are defective and the new model isnt really giving them any new features unless you count a larger hdd size or whatnot.

I build a new computer about ever other year, but i get better parts, sell the old parts, and end up with a machine that is faster than my old one. If my 360 breaks i am left with something that has little resale value and the new models dont play games any better than the old models. Its not really comparable to markets like computers/cameras/phones because cameras update several times a year, game systems update once every 6-7 years.
