Folks, the 6.1-inch cheaper iPhone is not happening. Period.

1. No room.
So today we have the iPhone X at 999, the 8+ at 799 and the 8 at 699. Expect these to drop 100 with the release of the new phones.
Even if we all pray to Tim C. every day,we cannot hope for more than iPhone Xs at 799 with a plus model at 999 a few months from now. Hell the new iPhone X might just drop in at 899 with the current X at 799. Where would the alleged 6.1-inch model fit?

2. Specs
What are the rumors? Cheaper, 6.1 inch, lcd screen. But many of the cost cuttings won't happen. You see apple have never released a phone less function packed than previous generations equivalent.
What would be the equivalent of current generation? Say the 8,after all it is the cheapest of the current generation.
They still have to whop in a bigger, higher resolution screen, making it directly more expensive.
They won't back on any features such as force touch, latest SoC, wireless charging, because then they could just sell the 8(+) instead.

3. Apple is not Samsung
Apple won't slap on their brand on a worse choice, they won't create an inferior product when their whole image is to be the best. That's why we love it.
Apple never sunk that low to release a ****** netbook.

4. Tim Cook the uncrowded king of supply chain
Yeah, it is easier to have less products and keep the old ones and sell at lower cost. Component cost is insignificant and apple can sell old generations at twice the price of component costs.

5. Longetivity
This product would be a temporary solution, removed from product line up within 2-years.

Sounds like a lot of opinion and no facts. Rumors from reliable sources have held that the iPhone X will only be available for one year, meaning it will not continue to be available next year when the new one drops. Therefore, your number 1 is invalid. No point in responding to the other points as they are mere speculation without any credible source. Just your opinions.

So Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman are both wrong about the 6.1" model? What universe are you from?

You must have missed the note from IDC, Gartner, and Apple themselves showing smartphone sales slowing due to a mature industry. The 6.1" model is born out of market requirements.

Your 5 points assume the smartphone market hasn't changed in the past 10 years.

Umm, nice opinion, but it is a fact it is happening. The screens were already leaked for them.

How can an opinion with no sources end rumors that are backed by analysts?

And reliable analysts at that. The 6.1 LCD iPhone has been reported for quite sometime Now and it makes complete sense Apple is offering this size at a cheaper price point, being its competitors also have 6” smart phones offered. I expect the 6.1 LCD iPhone to be the wild card having extreme popularity being its price point will be highly attractive and it still includes Face ID for those who want it, minus some exclusive features the 5.8/6.5 will likely have.

Reliable rumors say the X is a one and done. You may be able to find some immediately after this year’s launch from sources outside of Apple and the carriers, but the X will not be in the official 2018 lineup.

6.1” is happening. There have been leaks of the 6.1” screen.

Just another guy on a forum who wants to feel like he’s an “insider”..

Wasn't there a guy who was insisting Apple would never make another "plus" phone again as well?

You mean the front glass panel? There has been one specific hardware leak from Geskin, not multiple for the 6.1 LCD iPhone.

Isn't that called a Hyperbole? An opinion with no facts to back it up.

I would personally get the 2017 X over the 2018 LCD iPhone 6.1.

Hard to say that would be the case, at least for me, without seeing what the LCD model has. I am looking for Band 71 LTE in my next iPhone. If the LCD model has it? It's going to be harder for me to consider possibly spending more for the X.

I am expecting a 2160 x 1080p LCD model, 3GB RAM, A12 processor, band 71 LTE support, and some newer features.

If the LCD model doesn't have newer features and Band 71 LTE? Easily I would prefer the X due to the OLED display and the larger screen (even if narrower). Time will tell though.

1. Not every 2017 model could be retained. A LCD model could be at $599 or $649 to entice major markets to purchase new iPhones without paying too high of a premium.

2. 2160 x 1080p display LCD from Japan Display is possible. We have seen leaks discussing it before. Some of have speculated LG could provide iPhone displays this year too. It doesn't need to have the latest SoC to be a good seller. Feature cutting is possible to get the prices down.

3. Who says Apple will be Samsung if it released more cost-effective options? The iPhone 5c wasn't too crappy of a product. This is coming from a former 5C owner. The 5C is nowhere near as a bad as like a Galaxy J3 type.

4. Who knows Apple's supply chain better than Apple itself? Apple features some of the smartest business minds around. They have it tailor made where customers buy into the ecosystem and the brand with minimal changes. The X was the biggest change to form factors since the 6.

5. Let's circle back to the iPhone 5s, which will see a 5th year of support. The iPhone 6/6+ introduced larger displays. The iPhone 6s introduced 3D Touch. The iPhone 7/7+ introduced a Taptic Engine. The iPhone X introduced FaceID and a gesture based experience.

That has not changed the iPhone 5S from being a quality phone over the years. It might feel obsolete, but it can still work well for those using it: calls, texts, FaceTime, apps, photos, GPS, email, web-browsing, etc.

They are supposedly discontinuing the current x. And yes Apple has offered lower price items like the netbook. Look at the new iPad that’s only around $300 vs $700 iPad Pro.
