Would be quite awesome if they added an SD card.

I could buy a 16GB iPad and not worry about storing music.

Probably buy a 16GB SD card (very inexpensive) and toss music on it.

That happened early on with the iPad running iPhone apps and not having an ipad version yet. Now that there's iPad versions of many of the popular apps we got used to the nice crisp display

Yes, but iPhone apps are pixel doubled on the iPad, which is a relatively easy accomplishment.

If the app has to be "zoomed" by a fractional amount such as 1.3, the process is a lot more laborious for the hardware and would have a knock-on effect on performance.

Perhaps the rumored A5 processor will be up to the task of the increased load?

increased pixel density, apple did this with the iPhone 4. They did not increase the resolution, but rather increased the number of pixels, thus creating a retina display which just means you don't see the dots.
Sorry to harp on about this, but the resolution has been doubled from 320x480 to 640x960, whilst mantaining the physical screen size(3.5"), which in turn, enables an increased pixel density.

As well as that there is also the problem of what to do about fractional pixel sizes. For example a 1.5x enlargement would mean a 1px wide line would become 1.5px wide which is obviously impossible. iOS would have to fudge the issue either by choosing 1px or 2px, or by blurring the edge of the line with whatever is next to it.

I'm not sure how big a problem this is in practice. I'm sure many designers would complain bitterly about their pixel perfect designs being messed about with; however Safari deals with fractional pixel sizes all the time when you zoom in and obvious artefacts are pretty rare.

That's exactly what I've thought all along (and so it seems does the majority of the iPad forum.) But it makes you wonder why this rumour keeps cropping up from trusted sources.

This may come as a surprise, but maybe the industry insiders know more about what's possible on the iPad than all the armchair designers that populate this forum. iPad 2 will definitely have an HD-capable screen. May not be 1080p, but it will be able to do 720p minimum.
Find me a mobile graphics processor that can drive anywhere near that resolution.
If you had read the article, it's pretty obvious: the dual-core A5. It cranks out 1080p video "like running water," so that means 1920x1080 resolution is doable (but probably won't be the iPad 2 resolution given the 4:3 form factor).

I think the iPad 2 is going to be a bigger upgrade than most people think. And I think Apple will be able to keep cost down by streamlining their product line. Currently, there are 6 iPad models, and I'm sure stocking those lines has been a headache for Apple. I bet the iPad 2 only has two models, and the only difference will be storage capacity.

The one thing that might disappoint is storage capacity. May stick to 32 and 64 GBs for iPad 2, particularly if the SD card slot is really coming.

I am not sure where you are going with that ?

They increased resolution on a screen of the same size, and in order to do so they increased pixel density.

It is still 2x the resolution no matter. You can not have one without the other.

To apply the same to the ipad, they would keep the 9.7" - the only way to increasing it's pixel density is by increasing the resolution...

Exactly !

For those of you that think that Apple will allow the use of SD cards as storage, you are fooling yourselves. The SD card will only be used for storing photos, nothing else.
Of course I don't know that for sure but judging by the way Apple thinks, this is the most possible scenario.

Sorry I don't know much about screen res and everything. But when the iPhones res got improved the apps didn't look rubbish on it.... At least I don't recall them looking bad? The icons did and games were updated with retina graphics but I dont recall the ones that didnt looking so bad. Or was I just not noticing?

You're absolutely right. When pixels are increased in an integer multiple each axis, in the iPhone's case 2X, the pictures should look exactly the same when blown up to a higher-res display. The question is how it would look when the resolution isn't increased in an integer multiple, such as 1.4X, etc, because it requires a more complicated upsampling algorithm which will make the picture look slightly softer and might throw off UI positions by a few pixels as well as taking a bit more CPU time.

There is a world of difference between pushing out rendered video and processing 500 million polygons to play a game.

However, the 3D games aren't restricted by the highest resolution available. Couldn't they realistically choose to use just 1024 x 768 mode to boost the speed? As long as it can display sharp text in browsers and apps, I wouldn't mind jaggy 3D graphics in games, well not as much anyway. The developers can choose to utilize the high resolution if they can bring down the number of polygons and the texture size.

What if instead of doubling the iPad's display resolution, apple doubles the iPhone's resolution on the bigger ipad screen? iPhones 960x640 doubled would be 1920x1280 which would still be of higher resolution than other tablets and would make cross apps easier to develop.

This is correct. Sd card won't be used for storage, just for uploading pictures... Probably flix. Though there is a chance apple has another use for it also.

But it won't be for general storage!

someone is probably just making up these rumors to hype up the ipad 2 more and more so people are talking about it for the next few months until it's actually launched. it's a good strategy, but doesn't help me. i wish it were coming out in february.

A camera in the v2 will leave a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. Really, you couldn't have put one in the v1? C'mon! They should then just admit that the marketing department is the one really calling the shots when it comes to product development.
