Booby trap laws. lol... doubt it.
You wouldn’t if you’d read up on the law. All it would take would be a glitter bomb harming someone’s eye or startling them into a heart attack and you’d easily be liable. Suppose they jumped back in surprise and broke their ankle. And if you think fending off a burglar is an automatic successful defense, you haven’t been paying attention to US torts over the past several decades. And laughing that they deserved it, however true, won’t get you out of trouble in the eyes of a jury.

This is the gosh darn United States of America. The land of the free and the home of the inevitable lawsuit from the thief claiming entrapment and endangerment. A lawsuit in which the thief has a better than 50% chance of winning cuz this is America.
Y-e-a-h. The U.S. judicial system is so horribly pathetic, it'd be hilarious if it wasn't a crucial component of society and as amazingly messed up as it is.

On that subject, I was thinking... This guy should look into the legalities (if maybe he hasn't yet) into posting mugshot captures of these people. I'm sure at least some in the local community or communities would help set things straight. ;-)

Too cruel? So now we are considered even to thieves? When did this switch happened because last time I checked thieves were being punished.
Its a bit crazy that police is often refusing to help even when you provide clear evidence, tracking etc.
Let alone the fact that why is it that the video has blurred faces? Those people intentionally stole something that wasn't theirs. They were not kids to messing about but grown up adults fully knowing what they were doing. Police record, fine and some community work would be a good start. (no jail though, that would be excessive - unless repeated many times)

Settle down. I said almost, and it’s more a reflection of my particular disdain for that stuff.

Yea but what if this guy was legit getting this sent to his house in the mail? To take someone else’s mail is a federal offense and all these people taking the package thought it was mail.

I don't doubt that you're right, but if what you are saying is true it is literally the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. If someone takes my property from my property and injures themselves.... you're saying I would be accountable? That just seems ridiculous.
It's no different than rigging a shotgun to fire at a window or door when opened. The argument is, you can’t harm someone unless you’re present and at risk of harm too. A booby trap can injure someone who is innocent, like a fireman entering the premises. In the case of the rigged package, a curious or mischevous child might open it.

It does happen. I had a nice rotomolded RTIC cooler stolen from my steps less then 1 hour after it was delivered. Anyhow the people at RTIC felt terrible and told me if I would fax them a copy of the police report they would replace the cooler. Needless to say I had the replacement shipped to my workplace.

If you ever need a nice insulated cup, water jug or cooler I totally recommend RTIC. Great company. They didn’t have to ship me another $139 cooler for free, but they did.

They can, but traditionally (at least where I live) they will leave the package at the front door unless the shipping instructions specify otherwise. I think the receiver can request that the package is held at a hub for pickup. With how many things we have delivered these days it would be a hassle to have everything held for pickup, especially Amazon packages.
Where is Amazon drones with dropping packages you ordered on top of your head using your phone/watch/etc GPS+NFC or make a loud sound to turn your face up for recognition - then drop it on you ? :D:D:D

Well entrapment would be a hard sell. That requires - among other things - the police being involved in setting it up. They also have to encourage you to commit the crime. Having a package of anything on your porch isn’t you actively encouraging anyone to steal it.

As awesome as that sounds, I’m betting that even a glitter bomb runs afoul of booby trap laws.

Booby traps generally have to be intended to cause harm. Otherwise glitter bomb selling sites would not be so easy to find. The glitter on this one even spreads out, not really up. It’s a simple, safe deterrent.

That law refers to the mailbox and USPS mail only, as far as I know. A parcel on the doorstep wouldn’t run afoul of that particular law, especially USPS. Part of why there is concern on where it would go if they passed a law allowing the post office to sell access to your mailbox to companies - as in the company itself putting items in the box, not USPS carrying package or mass mailer it’s last leg of the journey.

I believe glitter and fart-in-a-can are quite different than a shotgun. Maybe that is the law, but it is a dumb one.

Is stealing packages really that common?

I like the idea but it seems like a lot of work for not much results. If you want justice, simply hide a gps tracker in the real package and call the police. If you want revenge, spray paint seems like a better punishment. I doubt those thieves will stop stealing after cleaning up that glitter.

This time of the year it is huge business! I can home the other day and had tjeee packages waiting for me.

The other option I saw is refilling your amazon boxes with your own crap you want to get rid of! Brilliant!!

Sure, if you only bring video of them they have proof but they still have to find them which can take time.

If you have video + gps coordinates you've basically done all the work, I sincerely hope police would take the time to enforce the law.

In California, the average package isn’t worth enough for the police to go after because the court system won’t put them in jail. They really don’t care...so cars follow around the ups and fedex trucks! Thanks people for voting for these awesome laws!

No matter how much you hope it, they don't. They don't even bother "enforcing the law" when it's something as expensive, big and easy to spot as your car thats been stolen, and are quick to point out that they are not a stolen item recovery service, but they'll take a report and file it for the insurance, with the advisement to move on and start looking around for a new car. In L.A., after reporting my car stolen, we left the police station, spotted it driving up ahead of us, followed it a short distance to a neighborhood garage, went back to the cop shop, told them where it was, and he admonished us for following it and gave us a lecture about sticking our nose in police business and potentially getting ourselves in danger requiring pulling police off other duties to come save us. My girlfriend starts demanding he send a squad car to the location, he just glares at us, she threatens to call up the chain, he calls a cop over to the location, they find the car, and impound it for 3 months. 3 months later I go to pick it up from the impound lot, and the entire inside of it has been torn apart, dash, doors, upholstery, seats, everything and is entirely caked in fingerprint-dusting soot that won't come off. It was trashed and remained so until I thankfully totalled it a couple months later. The civilian police are a billing agency. If you want any amount of justice in this country, you have to beat a path and go get it yourself.

The federal law you're talking about applies only to the US Mail. Doesn't apply to UPS, FedEx, DHL, Amazon, et al.

Granted, it is still burglary, but it's not a federal offense unless it's literally the US Mail.

The risk retaliation is not worth sending the message. I don't want them coming back to my house and throw a rock on the window or worse.

Just deliver the package to your workplace.
Think about it from the thief's perspective. You just got pwned by a glitter bomb. You're face is all over a video that you would assume the bomber has access to. If you go back to retaliate, what do you think the bomber has set up at the house? You're probably thinking, "man, this guy probably has all sorts of engineered traps and stuff ready to take me down."

It's not worth it. Just take the L and move along. Most thieves like this are just taking advantage of the opportunity. See a package on a porch and it's easy to steal. No skill or planning needed. They aren't going to take the time and/or the effort to exact any revenge.
