Now if only getting more RAM and/or SSD became a little cheaper ... cough cough.
Adding RAM did not, but the higher configs was also pushed down by the same amount. The price cut is for everyone. (Based on the Air price drop, the shakeup in configs of M4 makes it hard to compare)

Let's be clear--the problem was never Apple offering 8GB, it was fine for a sizable market (otherwise Apple wouldn't have sold as many devices as they did and had such high customer satisfaction rates) and is probably still fine for those people if they don't want to use AI--and what do people care what config others have? The real issue behind the smoke is people simply want to pay less/get more--a complaint as old as time that will continue on forever.

so all the people who don't need 16gb are paying for something they won't need/use.

Apple could have included a new hardware feature/double base storage/or lower the price, but nope, force 8GB users to pay for something they won't use. got it.
The people who could get by on 8GB probably do so little they could have gotten by on an iPad instead.

The M3/16/512 (8/10) is a bargain. Not quite the very base model M4 Mac mini, but still good. View attachment 2444470
It's even $1,129 refurb straight from Apple.

Because 8gb is no longer an option for anyone now that Apple Intelligence is part of MacOS. It simply would not work with that little RAM, AI models take up a lot of space.
Apple Intelligence is fully supported on 8GB M1 Macs, 8GB iPhone 15 Pro and 8GB iPhone 16s. It will be a few years before more than 8GB is needed for AI.

or you can just click the 16GB option instead of forcing all of those users to give up their Mac apps and relearn how to do their daily work on an iPad

apple intelligence will work with the current 8gb M1 chips.
Sure if you want to wear out your SSD because it's swapping 100% of the time. Apple should not let it run at all, they should restrict it to 16+ GB machines.

8GB is already not enough, even though it technically works. Add in local AI models, and no... I beg to differ. 8GB is a no-go for using Apple Intelligence. If you could hear your SSD swap it would be screaming in pain. This is why Apple finally has moved to 16gb, they know 8GB is not enough. RIP all the 8GB M1 Macs running Sequioa.

I do my day job on a base M1 MBA attached to a Dell 27" monitor. It's such a good little computer, even with a measly 8GB RAM. I could never do my job with an iPad. (I have tried, for about 30 minutes.)

I'm on an M1 Max and it's fine but I really wish it had av1 hardware decoding and wi-fi 7 (or at least 6e with the 6ghz band) for example.
You mean the WiFi 7 that isn’t finalized in 2024 should have been included by Apple in your M1 from 2020? Or the WiFi 6E that was adopted in 2021 should have been predicted by Apple a year earlier?

How exactly would they do that?

If it bothers you so much, get a WiFI 6E adapter, though since you should have WiFi 6 already, you won’t gain much.

Since you know so much more than Apple, why haven’t you started a multi-billion dollar computer company instead of posting here?

Still on my m1 macbook air, feel no need to upgrade cause guess what I got the 16GB build. 256 GB disk space albeit outrageous on Apple's side can be manageable with iCloud sync and external drives but there is nothing you can do about the permanent shi*ty RAM situation.

Please show me how to install Roon on my iPad.

Also, a 13” iPad with a keyboard is an upgrade, price wise.

This post is exactly the kind of arrogant gatekeeping that makes me push back on all the “8GB is garbage” crap.
I type “roon” on my iPad and an app comes up 🤷‍♂️.

Also calling me arrogant suggests I believe myself to be better than those who use their Mac’s for a light workload which simply isn’t true.

If you can’t have a simple discussion without throwing out loaded accusations such as that then I see no reason to continue this discourse with you.

So true. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the “it’s future proofing!” Excuse but the base model is more than enough for 99% of people and the device is long gone before they use any software that actually touches on the need of higher amounts of RAM. Especially with more and more services being done through the cloud, a strong Internet connection is more important than 4629 GB RAM.
More and more things being done in the browser doesn’t equate less need for RAM. Many times it is the opposite. Most websites take up just as much RAM as a desktop app, and on top of that you are dragging a whole browser around.

“Your system has ran out of application memory” popups and lagging from a few tabs on Chrome and a Pages document on a 2000 dollar machine is not acceptable. You can never have too much RAM and the computer is always using as much as there is available. A 64GB Mac with nothing open might even idle at 30. It improves day to day performance regardless of your use case.

1. M1 machines are 4 years old at this point. It'll stop receiving updates long before thrashing becomes an issue
2. If they restrict it to 16GB machines, then people would just complain "Apple could totally run it on 8gb machines, they just want you to buy new machines"
3. It's the user's choice.

Add in local AI models, and no...

1. A person who can live with 8GB isn't going to want to run local AI models since they can live off of cloud AI through other means.

8GB is a no-go for using Apple Intelligence.

Works for millions of people

If you could hear your SSD swap it would be screaming in pain.

668TBW on my M1 Mac mini with 512GB. works great.
