What will happen to the existing 8GB devices once Apple Intelligence starts rolling out? I still have an 8G M1 iMac. Will it get limited features?
Back to intel then?Well...how about bringing back user installable RAM and storage?
An 8GB M1 Mac can run all Apple Intelligence features and should be good for a few more years. He is probably patting himself on the back. By holding out so long he's made sure the maximum number of Macs need upgrading to use AI.
They jack it up because they believe it will be required to keep the machines running smoothly, not because they have listened to popular requests. It`s a clear indication of OS/Apps becoming more thirsty with the implementation of AI functionality.
Apple and appmakers will need some time to develop and determine levels, but their present estimate is 16 gigs for starters. MY prediction is that many of those who wanted to add 8 to get 16, will add 8 to get 24 in a year or two. For the same reason and with the same effect...
You mean like the FusionDrive technology they already have? And MacOS could simply prioritize that internal “fast” Ram over the extension, so it’s only used when really needed.
WiFi 7 is the new complaint, just because.
That’s absurd isn’t it. Tim only cares about shareholders and his own greed is the underlying reason.Wow +$200 for 24gb and +$400 (from base) for 32gb.
that is quite a bit bonkers! should be at least +100 / +200
realistically shouldn't be a 24gb option at all should just jump up to 32gb.
Sure it canAn 8GB M1 Mac can run all Apple Intelligence features and should be good for a few more years.
No one has claimed 8GB is enough for eternity. It was bound to happen at some point, personally I think this year is very reasonable. Could have been last year, sure.so all the people who don't need 16gb are paying for something they won't need/use.
Apple could have included a new hardware feature/double base storage/or lower the price, but nope, force 8GB users to pay for something they won't use. got it.
You're trying to tell me that 8 gigs of RAM is not enough for browsing the web, listen to music, reply to a message or work on a spreadsheet, etc.? As I said. If 16GB of RAM is enough for gaming in 4K how come 8 gigs is not enough for the computer to run at all?Because 8gb is no longer an option for anyone now that Apple Intelligence is part of MacOS. It simply would not work with that little RAM, AI models take up a lot of space.
I hope 16GB still feels like a lot of RAM, because that's what my M4 mini I preordered has. I am going to assume Apple learned from their mistake last time around... because no, you are actually wrong... 8GB was never enough. It was the absolute bare minimum to have a machine that runs at all. That's different from being enough. The thing is, Apple Silicon is so fast you can't tell when it's swapping between the RAM and the SSD... but it's still bad that it has to do it.
It couldn’t be because the M4 on TSMC’s higher yielding N3E process is cheaper than an M3 on the N3B essentially development process that has very low yields. And the kicker is The M4 Macbook Pro with 16GB cost the same as the M3 Macbook Pro with 8GB RAM which shows you that it cost Apple nothing to increase the base RAM.
Nothing except if you utilize AI its possible you see a little more memory swapping in activity monitor between the DRAM and SSD. Its works out pretty well because the M1 memory access between DRSAM and SSD is sufficiently fast, not slow. What will happen to the existing 8GB devices once Apple Intelligence starts rolling out? Wrong, it is officially supported. It will be faster with 16 for sure, and Apple decided that it pushed it over the edge where 16 is needed for those using AI, to give an acceptable performance for a new Mac. It was bound to happen at some point, AI or not.Because 8gb is no longer an option for anyone now that Apple Intelligence is part of MacOS. It simply would not work with that little RAM, AI models take up a lot of space.
My assumption is one of a few things:
1. It became economically infeasible to continue builds of 8, 16, 24, 32, etc.
2. Apple discovered AI needs more than 8 GB of memory for future workflows
3. Apple will use RAM as a cutoff in 4-5 years… and NOT the chip
4. (Wishful thinking) Apple got tired of being made fun of in the tech press
Uh, no they haven’t. Maybe for specific ranges. So far Microsoft is the only company I can find that has 16GB as base, everyone else is 8 or less(!).Ah yes, just in time when the rest of the industry has moved to 32gb as standard.
Remember when the OG MacBook Air had a 64 GB SSD as an option? Just seems wild in hindsight.Base 256 gb ssd is the holdover from that era
