No one forced you to develop for iOS.
That’s the point there are only two mobile OS systems in the west
So that is the reason why epic had to take Apple to court to get better terms because they refused to negotiate better terms with them.
That’s the point that some of missing in this whole court case

What monopoly?
It’s a monopoly is this aspect because there are only 2 mobile OS’s in the west
Then one company has the ability to crush your business if you try & negotiate with them and they don’t budge no matter what
That is why epic took them to court and even an American judge has said to Apple you need to change certain things in your iOS App Store system

"Later this year, ‌Epic Games‌ also plans to launch Epic Games Store Webshops, a feature that will let developers launch digital storefronts that are hosted by the ‌Epic Games‌ Store. Webshops will be free for developers making under $1 million annually per app, and for bigger developers, Epic will collect a 12 percent fee."

Hmm how is this different to what Apple is doing ? EPIC has a Monopoly ... on a Epic Games Store ... Developer should sue Epic for this not allowing payments over some private payments systems .... and reasons are the same as for when they sued Apple ....

and yet still using Apple Environment .... for free ? who is the Government in the World to dictate the companies how much they should earn ... well i like the idea ... lets go with this for every shop.

Hmm let me think ...

Windows is then what ? percentage installed of the Desktop OS compared to others ?

VISA and MasterCard are what ? - no other real alternative worldwide use

and i could go on in every different topic ... yet everyone has a problem with Apple, because what of the success / everyone wants a piece of the (Apple)pie ... and what is the fastest way to get onto the money ... not work not patience and time ... sue.

Apple is not perfect and sure has done problems but still if everyone keeps telling the world we are better than apple why they are doing this when they think apple is not the first best ? Are they comparing themself to the second or third of 4th good companies ... it doesn't make any sence

Spotify's complaint led to the first regulatory investigation into the App Store. The EU antitrust investigation started before Epic filed suit against Apple.
Yet Spotify is crippling the Music industry and not paying even close the amount of money the Musicians of what they should have since they are the creators ... same approach, the investigation should continue to Spotify, monopoly and they have too much of revenue and not paying enough to the creators

Because
Not everyone has a credit card in today’s society

Not everyone needs a computer to get by in today’s working society
However Apple as a company can crush your business by doing certain things if you don’t jump to their tune
As that is why epic took them to court

Interesting to know the details. For now it looks like Epic has won. But waiting to see else happens due to the appeal made by Apple.

I find this absolutely fascinating
That when any company challenges Apple on anything like IAP fees of 15% to 30% percent or takes them to court
Then certain people automatically say how dare epic or Spotify challenge apple and courts should investigate them

this is “amateur” college athletics just before NIL.

The walled garden will fall and we will be able to install whatever the hell we want, if we want. Other can stay in the garden if they want. You can wear a mask in your car alone if you want.
You could already do that by buying an Android device.

Now you are forcing those of us who preferred Apples model and freely chose to use it to lose that choice.

You’ve taken two choices and reduced it to one.

Yet you think you are the heroes? You could not be more wrong.

I disagree. The problem is we buy the hardware. The customer should be able to install or buy from whoever or however they want on devices they buy. If AAPL needs to make more money it should charge more for the hardware but stop being anticompetitive.
Then you need to buy a device that includes that capability. Apple sells the iPhone, which is hardware PLUS software PLUS services. When you buy an iPhone you KNOWINGLY do so. Apple makes it perfectly clear what the rules are. No one is forced to buy an iPhone. No one is lied to about what an iPhone they buy now can or cannot do. If the iPhone doesn’t include the capabilities you want and you STILL buy it, that is 100% YOUR FAULT.

Because Epic and Spotify do the exact. Same. Thing.

If you sell a game through the Epic game store they charge you a fee. They make you follow their rules. Epic and Sweeney (also Spotify) are hypocrites.

That’s not a monopoly.
The judge you are citing specifically said they are not a monopoly.

Meanwhile how can Apple crush their business? Apple doesn’t control the PC market, the Android market, the console market, all places where Epic already sells/sold their games.

Apple didn’t force Epic to develop a single
app or game for iOS. They freely chose to do so. And Apple told them up front what the fees and rules were. It wasn’t a surprise. In fact they even made the rules easier and the fees lower since Epic started.

And Apple didn’t tell Epic how much to charge for its products. Epic was free to set whatever prices it wanted to maintain a profit. Epic GAINED money and GAINED customers through the iPhone.

In what universe is that “crushing” Epics business?

Epic would have been better off creating their own mobile os and ecosystem with that money. That would have been a win win win:

Epic would have had their own platform they control and set their own fee structure for apps.

App developers would have had a third option in which to sell their wares (more competition in fee structures to attract app developers).

Consumers would have a much more competitive landscape when it came to picking a phone (no more just a choice between Android or iOS, they would have Android, iOS and epicOS).

We should have learnt by now that having and maintaining a duopoly in any market is a bad thing. We desperately need regulations to allow competition to exist at this level instead of the current poor regulation that simply further cements iOS and Android as the only options. Currently no company has any incentive to create a new OS and ecosystem due to anti-competitive measures engaged in by Google.

it’s not about paying a fee
It’s he doesn’t think Apple should charge 15% to 30% IAP that is one of the reasons he took them to court

I wonder if he’ll be happy with a per download fee, per app review fee etc? I presume that is the way we are headed with this.
It’s 12% that is the Figure they charge developers & Microsoft do the same
It’s not about wanting it for free

Well that’s not true because in one country there is a 3rd mobile OS that competes with iOS & android but the west don’t allow them

However I think this is funny that the minute any developer challenges Apple
It’s well epic should go & build there own mobile OS
Because they challenged Apple in court because they wanted to improve their terms and conditions

In a case of Epic vs Apple, John Gruber said Apple didn't lost to Epic, they lost to the court.

This rhymes with many comments here on MR.

All every developer and creator can say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU we will use the money to make more great apps!
But most devs never paid the 30% right? You needed to make over a million dollars or something? And then it got halved to 12% or something after yr1. I would imagine only huge developers paid any of this. So was Sweeney really fighting for normal devs?

And now he wants his own AppStore and is charging 12% himself for some tiers. So is he against any tax of is he advocating that a tax is actually necessary after all and he was just upset at the terms?

I’m confused??

I mean will Epic be happy if Apple changes to that charging structure since the court says they can’t charge a percentage. So epic pays a fee per download from the App Store, per app review etc.
