I don't mind Apple getting some pressure here. I certainly don't want iOS to become like Android. But there is no denying that Apple is taking things a little too far when it comes to limiting developers.

I'm all for Apple being forced to allow thrid-party payment systems and whatnot. But this should happen in a logical way. If a developer wants to offer a third-party solution they should be enforced to also supply the native payment solution of the platform. If Netflix wants to offer their own payment system, they should also be required to offer Apple's payment solution. This will give we as consumers the decision on whether we want to go with Apple or the third-party. If the developer is not willing to accept this kind of competitive sitatution they shouldn't be allowed to offer any solution at all.

In Netflix case this would mean that they either continue like they do today without offering any payment solution at all. Or they could start offering their own within the app, but for them to be able to do so they would also have to support Apple's payment solution and there needs to restrictions in place ensuring that Netflix does not artificial overprice the Apple solution in order to steer people into choosing their third-party option.

Same goes for third-party app stores. If that will ever become a thing, there needs to be regulations in place that enforce developers to offer their apps through the Apple App Store as a minimum. Sure, let Epic have Fortnite within their own Epic Game Store, but they should also have to offer the game through the Apple App Store. A world where users suddenly have to get specific apps through specific app stores is horrible. Apple also need to be able to retain some kind of control so they can enforce the use of new APIs and whatnot otherwise iOS suddenly becomes the same kind of legacy mess that is Windows where some developers simply refuses to embrace anything new forcing Microsoft continue to support decades old libraries forever simply because they have no real way of enforcing developers to comply.
The apple App Store has been a closed garden since it’s inception. No one is forcing iPhone owners to continue to purchase iPhones, obviously people accept and like this model. Developers are also not forced to stay or make apps for said App Store, and had the business model apple made for the App Store developers would have ran for the doors.

Epic sued Apple as they are small (7%?) revenue source for them, but a massive whale in the industry. A win against Apple could leverage their negotiations with Sony, Microsoft etc and could recover that 7% + some.

I agree. And yet... Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook ecosystems (to name a few) are now so big, that some international(!) agreements, rules and laws need to be developed to make sure that we as a society do not end up dancing to the tune of just a few big agglomerates. This is equally true for news providers and media creators like Disney. We are in uncharted market territory here, where the old monopoly concept no longer seems to work to describe the ever evolving content, software and data markets. Not to mention the intertwining privacy issues...

Then again, what do I know :)

The media should be embarrassed because this indicates what really happened. To quote Epic's Tom Sweeney on the verdict from his own Twitter account, "Today's ruling isn't a win for developers or for consumers"; Epic LOST on everything they asked for and the concession against Apple (a link to pay outside the App Store) isn't what Epic wanted. Now that Epic has appealed, Apple can counterclaim the one ruling against them.

Apple should open the musique widget to other apps because it is very annoying to open the Apple Music app every time when using another service!

If you are tired of the Apple Walled Garden, go buy and Android phone. Tim Cook isn't holding a gun to your head making you stay on iOS.
Exactly. Get off our beloved iOS. I would pay more to keep it locked down. Want inferior open wall? Go with Android. The peasant device. People complain about apple tax. I gladly pay it for what we have and would rally against any efforts to open it up.

I was referring to the post that the above was talking too

If we are getting into conspiracy theories then I’d suggest this one.

Not that big of a conspiracy theory when Chinese Tencent owns 40% of Epic Games. This lawsuit is definitely influenced by Epic’s Chinese overlords for China’s agenda.

Yeah I can see it’s not hard to connect dots.

I said it before, and will say it again: I still think all these App developers that are complaining are getting it wrong. If I have a product to sell, and I want to sell it in a certain store, then they are entitled to make a profit on my products. The mechanism is slightly different, be it that I might sell it to the store, the store slaps on a 30% profit margin and sells it to the consumer. In the App store case, I hand my product to the store, they sell it for the full consumer price, retain 30% and give the rest to me. Same difference. No where in the world can I demand that the store uses a different payment system or that customer inside that store pay me direct, it just doesn't happen and it's total nonsense. if Epic wants to sell their product elsewhere, then they can go ahead and do so, but if they want to sell it through Apple's store, then comply with their rules. Simple.
The analogy doesn't hold because with mobile apps there are effectively two stores: App Store and Google Play. If you want to sell your product to customers who have iPhones there is no alternative than to agree to the 30% cut. That fee is unreasonable for subscriptions because Apple's overhead is negligible: they don't store the content on their servers and they don't do extensive moderation of said content to demand such a high fee. However you look at it, it's a monopoly because there's no other way to reach iOS user base without going through the App Store.

this is aways the way that I see it.... you open a retail store, and you sell a product and use your own POS system. Then Pepsi decides it wants to take your store shelf and have customer pay them directly while in your store...

sorry but no

Apple was the one who built the infrastructure and its their store and they should NOT have to allow a 3rd party payment system.

Hm...

So China's government went to Tencent, forced Tencent to force Epic to go all-in on suing Apple, so that Epic games can install their own app store, which will be used to funnel data about gamers back to China's government. Then China will use this data to dominate the world according to this guy below:

The only reason epic wants to have 3rd party app stores is so they can dump cheap Chinese crap apps that spy on us users. What better way for the Chinese cccp to dominate the world

This is despite Tencent not having a controlling share of Epic, Epic must follow American and European data laws such as GDPR, Epic having a long history of wanting Apple to open iOS, and the most obvious of them all: Epic stands to make a lot of money by skipping Apple's 30% cut and opening their own app store so they can take a 30% cut from other developers.

You guys still believe that a group of Rothchild bankers control the world? How about Aliens built the pyramids? 9/11 was an inside job? Vaccines are a way for Bill Gates to inject microchips to track you?

People here hate Facebook because of the fake news and conspiracy theories. But the same people will gladly spread misinformation here.

Come back to the real world people. Conspiracy theories are unhealthy.

It does sound better than “for the money”.

Guys, don't forget that Epic Games is also suing Google for the exact same thing it sued Apple for....

They went after Apple first but separately Epic is also suing Google's Android App store too!

Here is an idea. Could the app stor be made into an app galleria? We open the Apple App gallery and then choose if we wanna buy apps from this or that store? Like a real mall.. they usually have a bunch of resturants, shoe stores, sport goods and so on.. let Apple charge for the cost of running the servers and exposure.

If they appeal, doesn’t it mean the next judge could also rule against epic with 3rd party payment system’s as well?
I suspect so, this could end up even worse for Epic, which I hope it does when they are stupid like this

Edit: Spell corrected

Have not seen this level of fanboying since Antennagate, where people thought it was obvious to defend billion-dollar cooperation for their dumb design. Calm down, folks - Apple won't ship you free stuff for being a good loyal boy.
