I agree. The screen just isn't big enough to do everything on-screen like that and your fingers end up obscuring too much. I've tried some other FPS games on the iPhone and it leaves me unimpressed. Graphically it's amazing to see something that complex playing out on a device that small, but control-wise it's a bust.

What might be interesting is if Apple made the black frame area of the iPhone touch-sensitive and allowed game developers to use that region for controls. I could see that working well, at the very least to get your fingers mostly out of the way, but I'm not sure if it's technically feasible.

It is feasible, and they have some patent applications on that technology.

Imagine that...a company wanting to make money....

They are still difficult as per a bunch of iPhone developers....its just that with so many Touchs and iPhones out there, hard to ignore it.

I prefer Apple stick to their guns, I like how everything is within their vision, not some resource hog dumping resource-pollution into the life filled waters of smooth operating, battery life preservation (if just a bit)

No, no. The future of handgeld gaming, is and will be, on devices that do everything else as well. It's all about convergence. Dedicated devices are on the way out.

the touch devices coming out from apple are slated to use the EXACT same processor as the new PSP processor, infact all the mobile gaming devices are going to use it(and guess whos talking with intel all the time, apple is)....

Between the exact same hardware, WAY MORE memory, and EVERYTHING ELSE... the iPhone will destroy all competition... the rest dont even have a chance IMO, as soon as battery life really gets good Sony and Nintendo will just be developing for the iDevice..

Mac wins because its the complete package, well be seeing this more and more

(its why I bought 9 shares of AAPL with my retirement fund from my mom, and its currently sitting at +57 points/+$500)

Touch screens are worthless for games. All it would take is a compact snap on harness with a control pad on one side and a couple buttons on the other.

to be honest Nova works like a dream 98% of the time

Why would the new PSP be using the same processor as new iPod/iPhone devices?

Processor is just one aspect. When it comes to gaming, GPU is more important than CPU.

Thats what sets Tegra apart. Same ARM CPU used in many devices, but it has an ultra-portable GeForce GPU as part of the package.

By the way, there is absolutely NO information about a new PSP or what processors it might use.

The only rumors floating around right now are for a new Nintendo DS, and thats rumored to use Tegra 2. If it uses Tegra 2 it will literally stomp the iPod touch and iPhone into the ground in the GPU department.

Like I said, theres no information or even rumors of an actual new PSP that isn't another respin of the current hardware.

Current new DS rumors put it using Tegra 2.

All portable devices use different hardware, not one uses the same.

And sorry, but a touchscreen only device may have fun niche games and it may be wildly successful for what it is, a pocket touchscreen computer, but it will NEVER win over the gaming masses. Never.

I play games on my iPod touch and iPhone now. And honestly, it leaves me wanting more because the games on the system leave a lot to be desired. I finally broke down and bought an Xbox360 and now the thought of playing games on either iDevice doesn't cross my mind. The thought of getting a PSP for portable REAL games, however, does.

No its not. Wheres blu-ray? Wheres expandability? Wheres HDMI, multi-card readers, eSATA? I could go on and on about how Macs aren't a complete package and I'm typing this on my MacBook.

As impressive as it is for being on the iPhone, it's a very cleverly written headline.

Yes, it's Unreal Engine 3 ... but it's not the full thing. It'll enable the 3GS to do some wonderful games, far beyond anything seen so far, but you're not going to see Gears of War 2 on the iPhone running identically to the Xbox 360 version.

So Unreal Engine 3? Yes.

Consider adding "Mobile Edition" after the title? Definitely.

Yep, this is nothing close to the desktop Unreal 3 Engine. It's a clever way for Epic to market their new handheld engine. It will look nothing like games being released for 360 / PC, not even close.

This is exactly what most people don't get. This doesn't mean that Bioshock (even though it's an UE2.5+3 game), Gears of War, Borderlands will be playable on the iPhone. Looking at that video it looks more like the UE1 engine but with a higher polycount in terms of lighting.

It does annoy me that they didn't add -Mobile or some kind of suffix to lump this in with other mobile-quality engines. Though I hope we do see some more fleshed out games once these small devs are able to just build a game using the UE engine.

What I don't understand is the SGX is a TBDR. Why are there still jaggies on the screen (even in the still)? AA is freaking "free" with a TBDR.

There are plenty of SoCs with GPUs around now, and the fact it's called "GeForce" doesn't make it special or in any way close to desktop GPUs.

I think this idea would be a cool idea :apple:

Sorry but...

..FPS will never be great fun on the ipod, the control scheme is too complex and gets in the way of enjoying the game. I hope iphone stays away from trying to do what every other game system does, and focuses on unique games well catered to the interface.
